I like Stoner, but i'm not sure he'd be fighting for wins again after 3 years off. A lot of people expected Bayliss to be running at the front in WSBK when he subbed for Gugliano early last yr but he was in the lower end of the top 10.

Stoner recently said as much. He said he wasn't planning on winning, but rather having some fun racing and replacing a good friend.

Hi Migs, I don't think Stoner is saying anything some of us already knew. Except when some of us say it, it's just conspiracy, until tid bits come out to confirm it. Maybe you should start listening to me more often. Casey is basically confirming what some of us said at the time, that Marquez's crew .... blocked Stoner's return to racing.

I doubt it was Marquez specifically, I'd bet it was his chickenshit crew, who I think are slime balls, particularly Santi & Alzamora.

Edit to add: I think Marquez doesn't think like this. I don't think he is this Machiavellian mastermind like Rossi, who has been known to veto teammates who were threats to him. Rossi didn't want Casey along side him and he did everything he could to get away from Lorenzo. I'm glad Yamaha had more balls at the time not to cave in to Rossi's pressure to make Lorenzo number 2. So Rossi left. Of course his return was brokered by the League, who under Carmelo has considerable influence. Honda had an opportunity to veto Marc's crew's influence, but given at the time they were looking at a 3rd title with Marquez, perhaps Nakamoto was persuaded not to upset the dynamic. Marquez is a much pure racer than Rossi ever was, I doubt he is preoccupied with racing politics like Rossi, Santi Hernandez, and Alzamora, similar to Alberto Puig. Those guys advance their careers through pulling power politics.

I think this quite a bit as well.

Given how out of his element he was when VR decided to turn the guns on him, I think he's another hyper-competitive racer who still on some level believes his talent is what matters most and that's what will settle all questions. He just wants to race much the way Stoner did, and others have.

The entourages these guys drag around are problematic. It's a shame because no one needed this .... years ago. Now ever top racer thinks they have to carry around a bunch of hangers-on.

I don't think comparing Bayliss to Stoner is even close to an accurate comparison tbh.

I dunno man, Stoner was a once in a lifetime talent that for as good as the current top guys are, still aren't as good as he was. I think all he would need is one race to ramp up. He's still young enough. He put little prep in for the 8 Hours of Suzuka, and he was at or near the top of the sheets right away.

Well I'd like to be proved wrong, but hopfully this year we find out!

Agreed.

On a different subject, does anyone other than me find it interesting how outraged Migs is over what Casey said, meanwhile, when his hero crashed out MM, there was no outrage from Migs about it?

So now Casey is saying that he feels Marquez and his crew are or were threatened by him...
MotoGP News - Stoner: Marquez felt threatened with me at Honda

If he is going to throwing BS like that around then he needs to get off his retired ..., and ask to race from day 1 of 2016...Casey being as good as he was on the old Duc then he should be able to win on the 2016 at Qatar, even on Michelins, with no problem at all...

It sounds to me like maybe Casey is a bit bitter about MM overshadowing Casey's legacy within 5 minutes of arriving at HRC...

i have to agree with you, its kinda arrogant to come up and say something like that, after all at that stage the guy was the reigning and 2 time world champion and the main contender, coming up and saying this guy was threatened by someone who hasnt been racing for couple of years ! huh?! but on the other hand it make sense too, wasnt marquez critical about his testing and contribution and.... i could imaging him not wanting casey racing beside him even if cant be competitive. i do love casey but just cant figure out whats the point of saying something like that(on that manner) other than raising bad blood or whatever,

ps; guys, seriously, how did you manage to get rossi into this! thats just weird.

It's understandable that MM might feel threatened. Stoner's legend is larger than life, and MM has never raced him. Even if MM has made his mark in the premier class he's still, relatively speaking, the new kid in town. Folks always falsely assume that the guy at the top is without insecurity, but that's never the case. And MM hasn't exactly had a stellar season in 2015 - so his confidence is probably not at it's highest mark just now.

Let us not forget that MM criticised (or allegedly criticised) the very feed back taht Stoner had provided to Honda at the start of season 2015 with regards to the engine characteristics and suggested certain improvements.

If I recall the comment (which is elsewhere in the forum) MM made comments regarding poor feedback from the test riders - found this version of it

“With regard to the evolution of the bike, it’s been made for the Japanese tester. When Stoner tested the bike, he identified the problem, but it’s clear after not riding a MotoGP bike for a year, you can’t develop anything.”

Source - Marquez doesn't think Stoner can develop his bike - GPxtra

Plus there have been numerous comments reputedly made by MM regarding CS' ability (or lack thereof) as the test rider.

Reading the article however I do not see it so much as anything other than answers to questions that had been posed and with journalism that leaves out the question asked it is difficult to read whether it is a ... or a response to a leading question

Either way, personally I like it ............... good to see some verbal sparring but we should also remember that MM and Alzamora did pretty much ditch Stoner's team so there is no doubt, little love lost between the two.

as ive stated i have no argument over your point. but the decision was made at the start of 2015, so they didnt know how season could turn out back then.

my problem was with casey's comment and in they way he was saying, he could simply come up and say my contribution to Honda was not appreciated and so on, not mentioning names and being specific,....

unless you feel something like this(which is completely respectable.):

Stoner away from the track was like Prince Adam of Eternia but at the track he was endowed by the power of Grayskull and became He-Man :spin:

Biaggi's example shows that it could be done.

Stoner's talent is very unique.

Ya know it's possible Stoner knows more about what happened at Honda regarding him and MM than we do. I doubt very much this is directly from MM and reading his comments to me they don't sound like criticisms of Stoner more like the guy hasn't tested the bike in a year he can't be developing it, Rather than he hasn't ridin a bike in a year he doesn't know what he's doing.

And here he is, in an unnatural environment (for an Aussie) with some bloke called Ben and the girls - sure seems stressed about the decision (not)

Agreed that Stoners talent is unique. However, Biaggi was not 'fighting for wins' and got 1 podium at Sepang on a bike that goes well there and he also got a private 2 day test at that very circuit the week before the WSBK.

IF Stoner got a private 2 day test on a GP16 at PI a week before the race, I'd bet the house on him getting a podium.

I wouldn't agree that Stoners talent is unique as there's others out there who have performed at least as well in the class and also very much better in the smaller classes.
I'm more interested in seeing how he manages the 1000cc Duc as all his experience on the Ducati was the smaller, and better performing 800..
Tyres will be same for all so less of an issue I think.
GL, MM, VR and CS on the same track would be something to look forward to even if they are all at different stages in their careers.
