WTF's going on with Simoncelli.

The guy has got tallent, and definitely has the ability to go fast. He is on a good bike, with good technical support around him, but still keeps binning it.

Was watching an old 'After the Flag' last night, where Emmett interviwed MS.

He made some comment about struggling on fuel ecconomy in some races. Maybe - in prac and qualifying, where fuel is not an issue, Honda can wind up the power, and put him on level terms, but in races where teams need to wind back fuel consumption, maybe the loss of power is effecting him more because of his size, and he is having to override the bike to keep up.

If this is the case, will Simoncelli ever be able to compete.

Maybe he will be one of the big winners out of the increase to 1,000cc bikes ????

Mick Doohan once said (in relation to Stoner crashing) that a fast rider can figure out how to stop crashing easier than a slow rider trying to figure out how to get faster. The reason he crashes is because of always pushing the limit and having no fear of the consequences. The other riders (Pedro) have good reason to be a bit concerned about this mentality.

I would have thought anyone having fuel economy problems with an 800cc bike would have more problems with an increased engine capacity where this problem would in theory be exacerbated....

I don't think he is terribly smart but I could be wrong about that....he is most likely suffering self doubt induced by all the pressure exerted on him by other riders this year with their comments regarding his racecraft and safety whilst his past history is also dubious - this has probably effected him psychologically so he is second guessing himself rather than concentrating on the job at hand....

I must admit I am not a fan of this guy. I prefer to watch riders who dont gamble with the safety of others and many of his overtaking maneuvers have been marginal at best and he has effectively robbed us of a 3 way title fight this year and also took out one of the other major contenders luckily without serious consequence.

Pedro, JLo and Stoner are far more professional in the way they go about their business and are the type of racers I admire for the skill, bravery and pace they demonstrate week in week out and also the mutual respect they show each other.

One of my favorite Doohan quotes.

I rate Simo and want to see him figure it out. I think he has more business being on factory bike than Dovi who is just too conservative. Simo will make things exciting when it all sinks in.

Although he comes across like he's got too many birds on his antenna, i totally agree when gets his .... together he's going to be a force. Can 1000cc be the answer?

His contract is up at the end of the year, there's talk Ducati are after his services.

Trouble is, he's had one and a half seasons, and it still hasn't sunk in. And I don't think it's going to.

Being fast for one lap perfectly illustrates the problem: Qualifying is always about switching your brain off and letting it all hang out. Racing is about keeping your brain engaged, and it doesn't look like Simoncelli gets to do this.

One of my Italian journalist friends says that Simoncelli's nickname, SIC, stands for "spegna il cervello". Switch the brain off ...

I'm not so sure. He did nothing but crash the 250 for 2 hole seasons before it clicked and then he was a top class rider even with the RS spec bike. I'm not saying he'll definitely get things in order, but equally i wouldn't say he never will just because he hasn't now. Trouble is, how patient can the teams paying his wages (and repair bills) be.

Why would you hang on to Simoncelli when you could have Marquez? Or Bradl?

Don't get me wrong, the boy is fast, really, really fast. But he's never going to win a race (barring disaster upfront) and he stands as much chance as Cal Crutchow of winning a MotoGP championship.

Wasn't he on a Gresini honda last year? and didn't he have roughly the same bad start but then come good from about this time in the season?

And this season he's on a full factory bike, so as I understand it he is in fact on a new bike again this year. I can only hope he does the same this year and saves his place in the Gresini team. If Sic & Dovi could get along them both in Gresini could be a damn good team IMO. and one I would like to see.

Ha ha ha like the breakdown of his nick

There are times, and Laguna was one where I watched him tip it into the kitty litter and cursed him, he has to end this ridiculous bin or win phase soon.

Stoner and to a lesser degree Lorenzo went through this but came out of it.

You know the riders, is he truly a skilled knucklehead with no hope of learning to stay on or does he have the mental capacity to overcome? (I'd like to think the second)

He won championships in the 250 class, surely there is something there in the grey matter?

Bradl? The same Bradl that couldn't stay with Elias? Sure, he's improved, but he's not quite comparable to Simoncelli yet (who regularly outqualified Stoner this year...).

He's never going to win a race? That's a massive call...one that I think time will prove wrong, but let's see...

It's just occurred to me that Simoncelli would be ideal at Ducati right now - Preziosi and company could then go back to not blaming the bike for poor results.

I do think that he will come good though, and I hope he stays in MotoGP to do so. But right now, more than patiently getting it together and enjoying a successful career in this sport, I expect he's worried about his ride - the Honda is looking very good for next year and he'll be kicking himself for putting a possible factory ride—or at least one of the top satellite rides—at risk like this. I often wonder what senior management at Honda think of him and his antics.

Right now his situation reminds me of those terrible golf movies where the star gets the yips and nothing goes right, try as they might nothing seems to get them out of the rut, and everything around them turns to poo. Who'd have thought Simoncelli would ever resemble a bad golf movie?

Both seem level headed and fast. Simoncelli is just fast.

And even then, when Simo is fast its only occasionally ........ Simo was being pumped up by the Italian media when Rossi began to be a non-story, sadly it has probably caused him to get of track mentally. He should have been left alone and not overrated.

Owned and corrected by Scottys post but qualy is like they say in golf "driving for show putting is for the $$$) - even IF Simo out qualys CS for the remainder of the year that I highly doubt WGAF where you finish is where it all counts !

I would would hope Simo "switchs on" sooner rather than later for the longer it takes the less chance he'll have being on good equipment.

Once Sideshow Simoncelli gets situated, he's gonna be a force to be reckon with. Although I don't care for the guy much, it's clear he has that something in him capable of the top step of the podium. Honda would be silly if they dropped him.

Remember...... just because he's on a 'factory' bike, doesn't mean he gets the same factory support from HRC, meaning technicians that only top dollars could hire. Unless they also share the same technician personell and telemetry/data with eachother.

Please everyone forgive Simo he just has too much pasta (spaghettibolognaise or marinara (and he goes off shore) before the race...and after hecrashes he wants papa de la Romas forgiveness …he’s a “uno pericoloso” or to put into English.."he's a solid red circle with a horizontal white bar which means you are about to enter a one way street from the wrong direction on an 800cc motogp bike...heheee
