nedwood, I've no idea, it was long before my time. have you tried google to find your answer?

I believe the rider in question is 1993 500cc World Champion Kevin Schwantz. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe he was at Donington chaps..............thats what the post says!

1.33.59 set in 1991, matched by Doohan in 1997 but that was in QP so doesn't count. Simon Crafar only just broke the record in 1998 and I'm pretty sure that one stood for a while too. Schwantz also held the lap record at Jerez for 7 years.

To be fair to Alex he would have been 1 Years old at the time.

Thanks for the info Skid. I'm convinced if Schwantz had the Kenny Roberts Yamaha team behind him, the early 90s would have been a lot different.

nearly a decade without the record breaking? That proves two things, I think. 1 is how slow the 500s developed, 2 is how freking fast Schwantz was.
I don`t really think he could have done much better on Robert`s team though, I mean, he smashed records and won races on that Suzuki, it can`t have been holding him back that much. Schwantz problem was, I think, he wasn`t the smartest guy in the paddock. Dont get me wrong, he was an awsome racer and as far as natural talent on a motorcycle goes, he is one of the best, if not THE best rider ever in MotoGP, but he raced with his balls, not with his head, like guys like Rainey and Rossi. That, in my opinion, is what cost Schwantz several well deserved championships.

I 100% agree with you about the consistency thing, if he would have rode smart for a few years other than 1993 he would have had a few more championships to his name. And yeah, he was blindingly quick on the Suzuki but keep in mind, it's a Suzuki. Before him only one man had ever won a 500cc World Championship on a Zook, Barry Sheene. Suzukis have never been a dominant bike in the GP paddock, there are just years that they aren't as far behind the Hondas and Yamahas. And it's not only the machinery that would have helped him at Roberts Yamaha. If he had Kenny Roberts coaching him, there would have been the logical reasoning to get points at every round and win when he can. He would have won many titles with Roberts Yamaha.

I wouldnt rush into blaming the suzuki for schwantzs lack of success, because in fairness the yamaha of that time had serious problems wich Rainey spent race after race riding over, and the Honda was supposed to be a total pig to turn. schwantz certainly cost himslef a few championships with his attitude, and that is what holds him back from being amongst the greatest riders. Doohan and Rainey, and Lawson before that were all better in my opinion.
