& yes tamada did win in motegi in 04.

He may win it / he may not win it.

At the moment it's looking as if he won't win it, and lose it to a certain Nicky Hayden and possibly Dani Pedrosa if he keeps riding the way he does.

The season isn't over till they cross the line at the final race on this year's calender, so from now to that time we could see another accident like what happened at Barcalona (Catalan GP), which could put some top names out of riding for a long time again (aka Hayden and Pedrosa). Then again, this is just as likely to happen to Valentino as it is to Jóse Luis Cardoso, so you cannot possibly guarantee that will happen.

Valentino obviously plays about in qualifying because he and we know that when he's spot on form he can come through the field and take the win and even have time to mess about for the fan's amusement on the final lap.

However, if the championship stays as it is now I either reckon that Nicky Hayden or Dani Pedrosa will end up the victor, then Rossi in 3rd. . .or that Hayden will win it and Rossi finish 2nd come the end.

Anyway, this thread has obviously turned into a great debate and I hope my post ends it.

I think it's VERY unlikely he'll win this one.

One reason is Nicky just needs to keep his bike on the podium to win this championship (and he's proven he can do it) and it doesn't matter if Rossi wins all the races (which he could do) given the difference in points.

There also the fact that Rossi is not being the fastest everywhere (which he would need to win all the races left). Rossi wasn't even close to Nicky or Dani in Laguna before the DNF.

IMO Hayden will take it easy, keep it cool and think in the championship taking a bunch of points at every race to win the championship.

Rossi will fight for the win like a madman in every race, but he has more rivals than Hayden. Melandri is a tough nut to crack, he's almost always at the top and has beaten Rossi previously. Capirossi could be a major threat in Bstone friendly circuits. And Dani (in my very biased opinion) although not seasoned enough in close dogfights pace wise is the fastest and if he gets in his rithm and clear track ahead ... you're not gonna catch him.

As they say - its not over till the fat lady sings.

This is the most open season for years and I certainly wouldnt want to call it - the championship could quite easily go to any one of quite a number of riders.
