Rossi sets deadline for retirement decision

The real question is, Is rossi "legend" material? Given that he was really only a cruising caretaker ( ie. the winningest rider in a low quality time of GP ), and he could not compete when riders, of real riding talent, came back into the series.

I really want to argue with this. After all, Rossi won his last two titles when Stoner and Lorenzo were both in GP. But Lorenzo just wasn't as good then as he is now, and Rossi unquestionably had the superior bike when Stoner was on the Ducati.

But I wouldn't call him a "cruising caretaker", either. Rossi was absolutely an alien at one point in time. It's not his fault there was no one else to challenge him until Stoner came along.

Rossi Stoner and Lorenzo all won during that period. But he had a few years "experience" on the machines beforehand.

As the others came up to speed ..... they left him for dead.

But also just the style alone of Stoner and Marquez makes one realise rossi is not in their league.

I would not even place Lorenzo in Stoner and Marqy's league, the Yamaha makes it easier for him ...... and rossi too for that matter.

More BM barry BS? Rossi and Casey had exactly the same amount of time on 800s and Jorge had the pleasure of coming to the bigs when moving from a 250 to an 800 was just like upsizing the same bike! Experience on 500s and 990s didn't really prepare anyone for the 800s, in fact other than Rossi it seemed to be a detriment as the successful 800 riders had little or no experience on 500/990s.

The rest of your post is just the same trolling garbage re-re-re-cycled...

I would consider Rossi more of an eclectic rider, not the most talented, but perhaps someone more holistic in his approach to engineering, riding and racing. While the others had distinct riding talent perhaps far superior to Rossi's, the early 2000's simply worked in VR's favour; also serendipitously bringing charisma to the sport - this perhaps makes him stand out as a genius. There can be quite a difference between talent and articulation, and VR simply happened to have the latter in abundance, which can sweep masses off their feet. I could figure from his autobio that he has an inherited passion for bikes (I have come to believe that one cannot really battle one's genes and thus succumbs to them), a flair for engineering them, orchestrating success due to a massive will to win, and entertaining his audience - quite the hallmark of a one of a kind legend. Although part of me feels terribly for riders with raw talent such as Stoner, who perhaps only won the respect and love of regular viewers of the sport and could not really become a house-hold name as Rossi was.

No need to feel bad for Stoner. The man was offered a king's ransom to stay with Honda but decided to walk away. Had he stayed, he could very well

have taken two more titles and cemented his spot as one of the greatest riders ever. But the man just comes off as whiny and petulant, even if all he's doing is speaking his mind.

I'm a huge fan of Stoner, but even I have to admit that, for all his talent, the man doesn't have the personality for MotoGP. That's the real reason he's retired.

I dunno... I think the two seasons on the Duc really broke his spirit. He was great to watch when battling it out with Lorenzo and Stoner and mostly toying with Pedrosa. If he'd stayed on the M1 and continuted to spearhead the development of the bike, I don't think he'd have lost quite so much of his edge. Two years of ignominy on the Duc is a hard thing to bounce back from. Confidence is everything.

Yes well that again brings up another aspect.

I'd agree that the Duc. accelerated the affect but  ......

I guess its not just a case of Stoner Lorenzo Pedro and Marqy getting better, but even on a Yamaha once you aren't winning every week, then you are out of practice at that mindset too.

This. Once you lose your mental edge in racing, that's it. i think what hurt Rossi wasn't just that he was struggling on the Duc, but that he couldn't match Casey's performance. When your biggest rival goes faster than you on the same machinery, it's a huge blow to your ego, and you need a certain amount of ego to ride one of these bikes at the limit.

Oh thanks for that reg. .... oh and while you are handing it to me could you save me some time and turn it round so the nozzle is facing you ...... and push the button.

When I read the title of this thread I was hoping it was a choice between "this week or next week".  Imagine my disappointment when I actually read the original posting :angry2:

There have been rumours about retirement, but you have since mentioned in the press that there was a misunderstanding…

It was not really a misunderstanding! It was very clear, but they put

the news in the right way to (create) some rumours! I have another year

of contract and in my heart I want to continue after next year, with

another contract of two years; but I have to be competitive, so I will

decide next year.
