A. As I understand it from the literature I found for you, lactose intolerance can start relatively suddenly, by which I mean in the space of a few months. With Stoner, it seemed to take about 3 months to affect him really badly.

B. Yes, he had. But he wasn't lactose intolerant then, as he appears to have suffered from late onset lactose intolerance (the diagnosis for this being that lactose intolerance appears as an adult, rather than as a child). Late onset lactose intolerance affects people who previously had no problems processing lactose.

What next Kropo, you gonna tell us about how the moon landing was not a hoax?

Tried what over where. Drinking lots of milk, or eating cheese and beef

Im From Tennessee

Hi Pov

You said expose yourself as in naturist. I live in England where trust me its a little bit colder than Tennessee, hence things droppin off!

I Recently got back from vegas & i saw 1 cloud all damn week 1 & even that was at 6 in the mornig on the way to the grand canyon. Even the bus driver said he saw this country on tv once - I think the words he used were grey, wet, windy & cold which i think is probably about right.

Christ I think i had better start eating lots of cheese, milk & beef if im gonna get anywhere near your size. Now i know what Jum was on about wehen he said about bigfoot

Yes thank you. I did read the articles you posted . i seemed to have miswed the part where they say the onset can be sudden.

Age

The age at which lactase deficiency presents varies from one race to another. In Blacks and Asians, hypolactasia usually manifests itself in early childhood (1-2 years in Thai), whereas in whites, it seems to occur later in childhood or in adolescence (10-20 in Finns). Lactose intolerance is not common in young white children. However, rotavirus infections may be an important cause of secondary lactose maldigestion in children, and, as the infection is cured, lactose maldigestion disappears as well.

There might be differences in hydrogen production after ingestion of lactose according to age, but the findings are not entirely consistent. The amount of breath hydrogen was shown to increase with age up to the age of 64 to 70 years and after lactulose challenge in a group of elderly subjects whose mean age was 76 years compared with a group of younger adults with a mean age of 32 years. However, in the study of Rao et al., hydrogen excretion was lower in the age group over 70 years than in the group between 60 and 69 years. It is not known whether these variations are due to differences in lactose digestion or in the colonic microflora.

Maybe casey was unfortunate enough to get this complaint as suddenly as you say but you can't blame fans for asking questions. Remember the story of the boy who cried wolf ? as pointed out by others here, casey does seem to have an excuse for everything.

So the time casey said he puked in his helmet, did he bang a bottle of milk just before lining up for a race ? I would think that's enough to make you puke even if your were not lactose intolerant

When i was at the hight of my training i could not eat or drink anything other than water for a good couple of hours before.

Expose myself to the wild

No, im not running around town naked. I get out in the woods, play in mud, drink out of streams, kill .... and cook it over a camp fire. general .... you dont see a germaphobe society do much anymore because they dont want to get sick. Im a firm believer that the more sterile you make your life, the easier it is for you to get sick.

And everyone is like you? If you want to know what could have caused a reaction, you should read the contents list of biscuits. Or crackers. Or bread. Or just about any processed food. I eat at the Ducati hospitality every now and again, and though the food is excellent (really outstanding) there's definitely lots of hidden lactose, in various mousses and creams and stuff made using butter.

Still, it appears nothing can convince you. That is your right, but I happen to disagree, I think there was a genuine, physical problem there. Stoner's mental weakness usually comes when he's frustrated, and he doesn't hide it. He just gets pissy, and turns into a quote machine. All those quotes about wanting to ride the 500s, how we should get rid of the electronics, what a disgrace it is that Suzuki can't field more than two bikes, they all came at times when Stoner was irritated about something. Stoner doesn't do psychosomatic, he doesn't crop stuff up for long enough ...

You seem to be attacking me just because i question. Remember this whole debate started because people were comparing it to rossi's shoulder and one even called rossi's shoulder injury a bargaining tool
<
Im not saying i don't believe, im just saying it was very sudden, convenient and for the most part kept private. Im not a doctor which is why i asked michaelm who is about whether lactose intolerance could be so sudden. Michaelm didn't exactly answer but i gather it's not his field so that's fair enough. Now interestingly you mention stoners mental weakness. My money is on that hit the nail on the head ! That is not a dig at stoner, mental problems are very real and manifest in all the ways we have seen stoner act. This can come on over night and would not be something a competitive sportsman would want to go public.

On a serious note, Kropo, what will it take to get you to Laguna 2011 (sorry, I can't help with airfare, I'm not rich like Lex). The best I can do is offer you low budget RV/camping lodging and I'll even throw in a free general admission/paddock ticket (yes, I know, not exactly your Ducati hospitality gravy train you are use to). We will even exempt you (for professional reasons of course) from all the boring hooting and hollering at the chicks we do at now infamous Sly Mc Fly's. Next year promises to be another epic year, as I think we will have a few members there that will amaze you with there fantastic takes on the world of GP.

Maybe after all the ott demonstrating with the scaphoid(not questioning the injury), people just found it hard to believe that a sudden mystery illness was legit.

I would be interested to know in what fashion stoner's scaphoid injury, his reaction to it and the effect on his results differed from rossi and his shoulder injury. Both have said after some but not all races that the injury affected them, and both seem to have been affected more in races where they have not done as well, quite possibly because the injuries did affect them more in those races
<
.

The main difference I see is that the recovery from the scaphoid surgery surgery that stoner had (which was for a pseudo arthrosis/non-healed fracture with fibrous union rather than avascular necrosis from which recovery would be more problematic) was likely to be quicker than rossi's recovery from shoulder surgery, and hence rossi has more reason to have surgery before the season ends.

Simple answer: Money. Access is no problem, I will have a media pass again next year. I even have an offer of shelter with Andrew Wheeler, the photographer. But race weekends for me are different to race fans' weekends, mine consist of working 18+ hours a day and occasionally getting some sleep. Fantastic fun, but of a completely different kind. One day I'll start going to races again as a fan...

I am not attacking you, just trying to counter your scepticism with arguments. Apparently, you are not amenable to reasoned argument, because you've already decided it was mental. At the time, I thought it was mental, but I've changed my mind. I think we'll see how strong Stoner is mentally next year, on the Honda. The bike is good, so there's no excuse, and he'll face a lot of pressure from Puig. We'll see if he thrives or folds.

You didn't answer my question about how rossi's shoulder injury differed from stoner's scaphoid problem either
<
.

I did say that lactose intolerance could have onset in adulthood in caucasians which I think kropotkin's posts confirmed, and that stoner' symptoms had gradually worsened over some period of time. I do know that lactose intolerance occurs because you stop producing the lactase enzyme, but I don't know how quickly this occurs in practice; it is much more commonly a paediatric problem, and I have no training in paediatrics and little experience even in my youth.

The main reason I didn't weigh into the debate is because I don't know enough about stoner's history, symptoms or investigations, or indeed about lactose intolerance (or the cfs) to make any even vaguely informed comment about whether they could explain stoner's illness and symptoms. I didn't know that lactose intolerance could cause cfs, but remember someone posting that it can from what seemed like a reputable source. I don't recall any statement from stoner, his camp, ducati or anyone connected with motogp that stoner's problem was the cfs either though, or that it was explained by lactose intolerance alone, just that it was the only definite thing they found, apart from electrolyte disturbances and abnormal responses to exercise on testing in the AIS biophysics lab which would possibly correlate with him fading late in races. There does seem to be some implication that the problem has resolved with him avoiding lactose since.

I actually agree with you that the illness was mysterious and not straightforward, but this is not nearly the same thing as saying it was fake or even psychosomatic. While it is true that the riders have access to the best orthopaedic/trauma surgeons going around, and I presume to very good sports medicine physicians (some of the best of whom are australian by the way; Liverpool recently hired one as their chief doctor) if he had a medical illness completely divorced from their fields it is not axiomatic that they would diagnose it
