Rd17 - OR Thailand Grand Prix 2023

My math ain't great but here are some musings. There's 111 points left on the table for the 3 rounds left.

Sprint scoring = 12, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Race scoring = 25, 20,15, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

If Jorge Wins all 6 races he would have 487 (376 + 111)
Pecco finishing second in all would be 476 (398 + 87)

If we break it down a bit more per race, then there is 37 points available per race. So if Pecco won in Malaysia with Martin 2nd then the lead would increase to 21 points.

If the same happened at Qatar then the lead would be increased to 29 points. Still not enough to close out the title before Valencia. Of course if one of them DNF's in a race that blows this wide open but my man maths can't work all that out right now.

In short, save for a (or multiple) DNF, this title is going to the wire, but Pecco needs to start winning. He can't rely on finishing second to Martin for the rest of the yr.

A thought...if Bagnaia loses the title this yr. Is anyone EVER going to run the #1 again?! I think the last time a title was defended running the #1 was with Doohan, right?

It will also mean there are 5 MotoGP champions on the grid at the same time. I bet that hasn't happened in the history of MotoGP/500
 
Finally got around to watching the grand prix, but I shouldn't have waited. Thailand is the second solid race in as many weeks. I thought Binder had it. Three-to-go and he was pulling away, but again the riders appeared to be using a bit of race craft by holding some performance in reserve. Pecco's move around the outside was awesome, even if it wasn't successful, and it may have cost him a better result. He spent the entire last lap trying to regain lost time.

I was not surprised at all when the FIM demoted Binder for exceeding track limits. It's 2023. You can't have a race without some bogus controversy, and Martin was running illegal tire pressures to boot. I guess the moral of the story is enjoy the spectacle and don't ask for substance regarding the race results. Just marvel at the riders and move on to next week.
 
I did not realize how small Martin is, does he have an advantage as such over the larger/heavier competitors ?
Being small didn’t help Pedrosa, Bautista or Loris Caparossi win a moto gp title. Although Pedrosa should have and Bautista has just won WSBK title for 2nd year on the bounce. Loris just gets to drive the beemer round before the racing starts.

But he didn't DEFEND his title. Rossi won in 08 just like Stoner won in 2011 when Lorenzo ran the #1, they reversed roles for 2012.

Don't really get online much over the weekends but have to say, Marc was rider of the race for me. That Honda had no business fighting with an Aprilia and he was an animal on the last lap, especially the last corner!
Marc Marquez is the biggest LOSER of this race.
That Honda was a winning bike in Thailand race, yet all he could manage was only 6th place.
Most overrated ONE TRICK PONY RIDER.

if you put a healthy Alex Rins on the bike , he would have won comfortably, just like how he did in a Austin.

Certainly it was the best bike in Thailand, unfortunately Marc Marquez didn't have enough talent to win on it, and let the Ducati boys beat him.

Marc Marquez is going to have a real hard time in 2024 going heads on against the Ducati boys, especially Martin., and others like Pecco n Bezz will destroy Marc Marquez
 
I thought that was just Marquez being the racer he is. He doesn't like losing position and will grab it back if he can. He did it with multiple riders. AE and Fab were another two.
Fab did well here made up a number of places and was still fast toward the end.

Yes, it was the best bike like the 2010 Ducati, which Rossi and Burgess thought just needed someone better than Casey Stoner to ride it. How did that go in 2011 and 2012 ?..

He was especially a nuisance to Sete Gibernau in Jerez 05 and Stoner in Laguna Seca 08.
