Problem with Peugeot 306 steering

Right ho!

Wondering if anyone can shed any light on this problem we have on our car. Its a 96 Peugeot 306, and the problem is that it gets very unstable in corners, especially when its wet.

Prob 1:

If I enter a slow turn (sub 20mph), like a small roundabout - and its wet, the car doesnt want to turn and quite often skids straight. I had a really one the other week, whereby I was taking a slow bend, and the car just went straight across - completely missing the bend and endding up not on the raod (luckliy it was an entrance to a company).

Prob 2;

Normal speed corners, country road style (40-60mph) - the car will turn quick, and feel unstable - the back end wobles out - its weird to explain - but its like the front wants to go round too quick - the back end is playing catch up and its like a plate of jelly.

The tryes are all at the right psi & they have decent tread.

It makes me think that there is something up with the power steering............over the car is just over-steering or something?

Anyone any ideas before I get it to a garage?

not to up on car's mate but ,when you say it wants to go straight when your turning,that sounds like some sort of differentual problem.
grab hold of the wheel and pull it around to see if theres any play,just to check drive shafts wheel bearings and track rods are all the way they should be.
best get in in a garage and let the pro's sort it mate, never take chance's with steering or brakes.

Get the ABS checked,Ben.Wild stab,I know but worth it for peace of mind.

I was half thru reading and was gonna say sounds like you have like no tread or tyre problem but you said okay your alignment could be WAY out and that would cause some problems if its really far out have you hit any big bumps or anything lately sometimes that can cause wheel alignment problems if you wanted to check the bearings which I dont think is the problem just hoist up the car and try to move the tyre north south it shouldnt really have any play I dont think it would be differential if its some base model it probably has a open differential so nothing really there! Start with alignment first its cheap to have checked!

If it's not the alignment/steering then it seems to me like your suspension is in a very poor state, maybe your shock absorbers need replacing.
That would explain the wobling and understeering (to a certain degree).

If it was just happening at 40-60 I'd say it's a rear shock for sure. But I bet Krazy's right Ben. Just get the wheel alignment done at kwik-fit first of all to see if that cures it. Way better than some chisler charging you 2-3 hours labour to end up fixing the same thing anyways

i wouldn't trust kwik-fit with a pair of roller skates let alone the family car.
shock sounds like a good bet,

Thanks for all the advice folks..........and thanks for the laugh frost! heh

I had the car today, so took it in to a garage for a quick check - turns out the bushes on the front are fooked - the wheels had soooo much play in them when they had it jacked up.

Needless to say - its being booked in to be fixed.

Hopefully that i'll sort it.

Deffo agree with that! My Renault is not yet 3 years old and has been into the garage 5 times this year, it's days are numbered though. Ben Good luck you'll need it

well folks...........the car is no more!

The elecy windows have been bust for a few months (are you getting the idea that this car is a banger!?) - and on sunday one of the windows dropped right down into the door - and the inner cable had sanpped. We know that this is an expensive job - so we got a new car (well, 4years old).

So - the Mrs has flogged the banger for 100 quid to some guy at her work who does cars up.

NO MORE BANGER!
