Till you wipe out on an oil patch and find yourself in the trees.

Not a fan of the public roads as a race track deal. It's not the TT out there.

Or, you don't and you have a brilliant day riding the ranges in the sunshine.

You are right though, time attack, racerboy style riding is certainly not for public roads. It's selfish and reckless.

I ride aggressively, but within the limit of my ability and the time/place. I'm not sawing through traffic at 150 with shorts and a t-shirt. I am actually a very safe rider. Hell, it's what I do for a living.

Well... I never got paid by a corporate sponsor to ride so can't say I did it for a living, but I think my years as club racer have stood me well on public roads. I haven't dropped a bike now in almost 30 years. I don't really do liter bikes anymore and don't feel the need to ride at crazy speeds, but I do go fast on back roads that I know intimately; ones with very little traffic. For me the fun is not so much how fast can I go, as it is how cleanly I can transition and of course the sensuousness moving through the air at speed down a beautifully designed road. I live minutes away from Bear Mountain which is biker mecca around here. Lots of young kids come through here on liter bikes who only go fast on the straights. Love to slip past them in the twisties on my SXF 450SM. Too damned tall tho for putting the knee all the way down. Did my fair share tho back in the day.

For me, a knee down on an off-ramp trumps pretty much everything else!

Agree and disagree JPS.

I hang off a bike on the road because the body position gives me more control and feel. I get through a pair of sliders every summer simply through road use irrespective of track days - not because I treat the road as a race track. If I didn't hang off, I would generally be at the same angle of lean and at the same speed without the benefit of using my slider as a gauge or the confidence it instills. Whether you hang off or not, (even if you don't attack a corner) and hit oil or God forbid diesel and the bike is leant you're into the weeds regardless. With your knee down there is at least a remote chance of saving it.

We have to adjust our style on the road and often compromise lines to survive, but I see nothing wrong with grinding around a shell grip constant radius corner on a set of street/sport tyres with good visibility on a country road.

Treating the public roads as a racetrack is an entirely different matter - particularly since those that do often endanger themselves and other road users through an over estimation of their own capabilities and I agree completely.

I find that I lack the self-control on the street.

I start off riding at seven tenths, then I slowly escalate until I find myself at nine tenths! I struggle to ride at a relaxed pace - for me, it's all or nothing, so I try to stay on the track.

I won't even buy a streetbike these days, because I know what will happen...

We ride Deals Gap literally every Sunday and we ride fast. What we don’t do is cut blind corners and we stay in our lanes. If you want to quit getting invites to ride, the best way is to act like a squid .

I hang off on the road (where possible and work whatever line that doesn’t put me under oncoming traffic) because it’s simply more confidence inspiring than just leaning in.

The only oil slick I encountered, touch wood, was going in a straight line. Motocross experience from way back when helped and I got the rear in check instantly.

The very reason why I stopped riding with a group of mates down the south coast many years back.

Decent enough guys (most of them) who bought their other mates around and it became a ..... measuring contest which resulted in a number of crashes across a few of the rides I went on (not my crashes) so I simply rode away.

......... ruin it for all, so avoid the .........
