Points system question

Some of you may already know I just recently started following MotoGP or even Moto3 for that matter. My question is the point system for championship. Today Marquez has won the race and was crowned world champion.

My question is there are still races in the season how is Marquez the winner? Is it the first rider to get to a certain amount of points wins? Or a rider to lead the next rider by a certain number of points? For example if the number one rider can gain 100 points on number two they win championship Hope this question make sense.

The gap between first and second in the championship table has now exceeded the points on offer for first place in the remaining races.

ie. The gap now is 77 points but with 3 races left (Phillip Island, Sepang and Valencia) the maximum points that can be earned is 75

3 races left to go which means 75 points to go. His lead is 77 points to rossi. If rossi wins all 3 races and marc scores no points, marc will still be the champ, with an advantage of 2 points.

Wow, so Brad Binder really performed this year to win with so many races til the end of the season. Still looking forward to attending my first MotoGP race in Malaysia in two weeks. Thanks
