Hi everyone!

[I don’t know if this is appreciated, but I’ll just give it a shot. If unwanted, please remove this thread]

I’ve created a MotoGP App for android, which I think will be interesting for you MotoGP fans
<

It’s called MotoGP Weather & News . It’s main feature is providing a detailed weather forecast for upcoming MotoGP weekends.

Beside the weather, the app also shows track information, the current championship standings, MotoGP news (source: google news) and a detailed MotoGP race calendar.

The weather report consists of a long term weather forecast (10-days ahead of the event). This report is updated multiple times a day. The displayed forecasts are for the time of the event (not the entire day) and is pinpointed on the location of the event. So any weather forecasted, is expected during the event.

During the event an hour-by-hour precipitation forecast is shown for the upcoming 48 hours. So you will know exactly what time the rain is expected to fall. (bottom panel in the screenshot)

The app is free, and can be found in multiple app stores. I’ve posted some of the links below.

I hope you can appreciate this post, and are willing to try the application. I’m sure you’ll like it!

Nice work mate, I like it

doing one for iPhone?

I'm thinking of doing that. Just need an iPhone for testing

Yea, i'm searching for radar imagery, but they're not widely available.. Not giving up though!

sidenote: the precipitation forecast in the bottom panel should give you the same information as a radar image

One thing I've learned from bike trips is that the forecasters are hopeless. I prefer to watch the radars and decide for myself what is likely in two days time.

I made this same app for F1 a couple months ago (Formula 1 Weather & News), and the forecast are pretty accurate (haven't seen any false forecasts)

Sure, 10 days ahead of the event the forecasts aren't spot-on what the weather will be on that day, but nearing the event it's get more accurate.

I'm working on sat/radar imagery for future versions, but for now the precip. panel should work
<

You should make one for WSBK because only the Spaniards will be watching MotoGP next year and they can't even afford free.

Just jokes...nice work! Do one for iPhone please.

Very considerate thought. I don't have android, but a good gesture non the less. Having some of these forecasts posted on here on the days leading up to races would be fantastic! Welcome to Powerslide, X man.

Yeah because you really know wtf your looking at. Is this yet another thing your expert at bestialitybarry? I doubt Australia is the hardest part of the world to predict the weather

Yeah I do ...... it ain't rocket science .......

Do you open your eyes when you get up each morning Rog. ?
<
<
<

I check the rain radars just about as soon as I get up, and at night so I kinda know whats coming Rog. .... its handy. If I relied on say watching the forecast every night on TV ....... it'd be useless. Forecasts on the net are updated, at best, every 6 hours ............. say no more.

Its especially useful for PI, because as anybody knows like many parts of Australia the weather can change in minutes. When you have a radar that tracks the weather every 10 minutes ...... you know exactly whats coming. Couple the wider view radar loops with a look at a few synoptic charts and you pretty much have it nailed.

What do you do Rog. ? Open the door and look outside?

A radar system that can forecast weather two days in advance?
<

Let me guess, It must have special 6-dimensional gyos, installed by Dr. Who himself....

A radar does not forecast anything ....... if you weren't being such a prick you would have realised how idiotic such a statement is.

Wake up ........

We go out to what we refer as a National radar here, so two days is dead easy.

Most weather patterns don't drift willy nilly ......... here they drift generally west to east, and when they don't its pretty obvious which way they are going.

You are aware that these tools are used by forecasters are you not? Its just that given that you can get several interpretations of the same weather patterns ......... perhaps its better to have a go at it yourself.

I thought you were supposed to be somewhat technically proficient!!??

Why do you give a .... about the weather at PI? It's not as if you ever go (traffic)

Nice app Xclusion - I like the way so much useful info is condensed. I don't have a smart phone - as my friends on here will testify I prefer to rely on carrier pigeon or smoke signals to communicate. I hope it is a success - good luck.

I think that forecasters have a particularly unenviable task actually Barry. If they are right it goes largely ignored and when they get it wrong they are publicly pilloried. Most in the U.K. will know what I mean when I refer to Michael Fish in 1987.

Here in the UK it is particularly difficult at times with six major air masses and the relative movement of these which can dictate changes of the weather. In The course of the jet stream is also crucial in governing how these interact with each other. Our prevailing weather systems come in off the Atlantic West to East but when we get continental air it can be very warm in the summer or conversely very cold and dry in the winter. Invariably it can be reduced to the battle between an incoming low/depression or a ridge of High pressure and which one will prevail and when.

Predicting localised rainfall two days ahead even with the assistance of radar can be a tall order.

I should imagine given the potential for the extremes of weather that your Island Continent, sorry, Island, can produce, the role of the long term forecaster is particularly under scrutiny.

Having a go at it yourself, does nothing to whether one respects a forecaster or not, if anything one can appreciate the task at hand. And frankly ...... Who gives a rats arse whether I respect a forecaster/forecast or not .......... I'd rather know if its going to rain, or what the weather is likely to be like.

Nonetheless, I prefer to read the radars and if they concur with a forecaster ...... good on em.

I have not relied on a forecasters say alone for many a year, certainly since weather radar became such readily accessible public information. Indeed its one of the most used bookmarks on my phone. Especially if I have a hop of say 300k or more and don't want to stop for a gear change.

Going camping ...... same thing.

surfing ....... not real important but handy ..

skiing ......... very useful.

Oh and Arab. have I mentioned I sailed and windsurfed profusely, some time ago ?

Amongst other things - yes Barry you did...many times.

I'd be intrigued to know when was the last time you went skiing in Australia though. I guess Perisher isn't too much of a undertaking from where you are.

The Cornish and Welsh surfers I know are constantly looking at off shore and onshore forecasts since swell is governed primarily by wind and thus the interaction of pressure gradients/systems. The majority of surfing in the UK takes place over the internet by the XBox Generation I'm afraid to say.
