Let's not get to ahead of ourselves.

He is still 1.3 sec behind. That's way off over the course of 25 to 28 laps.
It's still testing but I will be the first to leap for joy if he get's it to under .5 secs each tract.
True, however I think it's better to compare him to Stoner, for better or worse. And at the moment, he's .8 back. Better than the usual 1-1.5 seconds back he was throughout '09.

Casey Stoner finished the first day of 2010 MotoGP testing in second position on the timesheets at Sepang in Malaysia.

The 2007 world champion took his new 'big bang' powered Ducati to a best lap time of 2min 1.902sec, which placed the Australian 0.491sec behind Yamaha's reigning world champion Valentino Rossi.

However the day was not as straightforward as it may have seemed, with attempts to solve a chatter problem hampered by roasting temperatures.

“Today was difficult to understand,” confessed Casey. “We started off with a setting that was quite good, did a reasonably good lap time [on lap 12 of 42] and then tried a lot of different combinations to try and get the bike feeling a little better.

“We were having a few problems with chatter. We didn't really get any improvement, but the track conditions were so hot that it was difficult to understand if we were actually making progress.

“We were basically doing the same lap time even with a setting that felt good. We did a lot of 2min 1.9sec and couldn't really improve on that.

“Hopefully it will be a bit cooler [on Friday] so we can get some better track time, because we didn't understand a heck of a lot today.”

Stoner is now planning some big changes for the second and final day.

“We've got a few big things to try tomorrow,” he revealed. “We were trying a lot of small things for the first part of today, that didn't really help us, so we tried some bigger changes. We seemed to go in a circle but maybe that was to do with the temperature.

“We tried one new swingarm and we'll try another one on Friday. Hopefully we'll find an improvement, but the standard one we've had all along has been working very well. Both the carbon and aluminium standard ones.

“We're around 3-4 tenths away from where we want to be consistently.”

Team-mate Nicky Hayden was seventh fastest out of the 17 riders, 1.381sec behind Rossi.

Day two.Race Simulations planned and an extra hour given for the rain

Honda has revealed that its factory riders haven't been exchanging information since 2008.

Hmm welcome to the back of the Grids.?

Following the news that Yamaha team-mates and title rivals Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo will no longer share data during a grand prix weekend, Honda has revealed that its factory riders haven't been exchanging information since 2008.

Kazuhiko Yamano (pictured), formerly Repsol Honda team manager and now team director, revealed the existence of the policy during a Friday morning press meeting here at Sepang in Malaysia, venue for this week's MotoGP test.

“This year there are some small changes to the Repsol Honda team structure. I am now the team director and both Dani and Dovi have their own separate team managers, like at Yamaha,” began Yamano.

The mention of Yamaha prompted the question of how much data will be shared between the Repsol riders.

“So, at Repsol Honda, since 2008, data has been separate in the pit garage,” Yamano revealed. “But development side the data is still shared. Yamaha is starting [to do this] this year [but] we started in 2008.”

Pedrosa was still riding alongside Nicky Hayden at Repsol Honda during the 2008 season. Dovizioso then replaced the American for 2009.

Despite the technical 'firewall' between the Repsol riders, Yamano insisted that communication is not a problem.

“Outside it might look like a wall [divides the team], but inside Dani and Dovi and me discuss things all together.

“And this year there will be more discussions like that between us. It will be more open.

“I'll take photos so everyone can see!” he joked.

Playtime/Friendships go to the wall Now the seasons started for Rossi

<

Valentino Rossi and Marco Simoncelli may be good friends off track but, now that they are both racing in MotoGP, Rossi won't be offering any advice.

“No no! When Marco signed for MotoGP, the tips are finished!” smiled Rossi.

“I think it's normal! I have a good relationship with him, we stay quite a lot together at home, we train in the same gym and together with the Motocross bike.

“I have a good relationship with him and I've seen him growing up to be a world champion, but now he's a rival, like the others,” Rossi added.

Former 250cc world champion Simoncelli will ride for Gresini Honda during his first premier-class season, while reigning seven time MotoGP champion Rossi remains at Fiat Yamaha.

So Rossi sees all Riders racing against him, even Countrymen and friends, as rivals when they count as rivals… Wow, would you believe some call it cheating! And Lorenzo has 'No Comments on this', he may not like it, but Rossi applies the same rule to all, proved by him not giving advice anymore to his friend Simoncelli.

As impressive as Spies times are, i just cant help but look at the distance from 1st to 5th. Spies made up close to a second on his best time from day one, which should be applauded, but then you look at the 1.3 seconds still to be made up and its kind of depressing. It just shows how special those top 4 are. If your into moral victories, this is the series for ya, because this is a race for best of the rest. The bad part is that 3 of the 4 are as young or younger than Spies. I will be happy for a top 5-6 for Spies this year, after that, all we can do is hope the big bikes will make a difference in the pecking order

I think i read the first day at Sepang Ben was trying out some new things? So he wasnt going to be all that fast?

Its a great peformance by Spies although i agree with what you say. The 'aliens' are just incredible and does sometimes make the racing slightly less fun. Dovi and Hayden are no slouches yet they on bikes same as the ones used by team mates are still over a second a lap off the pace.

Povol i have to agree, hopefully when the big bikes come in that will result in closer racing like we see in 125s and WSBKs

I'm pretty sure Spies is going to find his way into that top group on plenty of occasions. Remember he is on a satelite bike and how many races have they won since the start of the 800's. Being a second off Val's time is awesome. I bet he finds another .5-1 second in the next few practices. I am also willing to bet he does really well at Qatar.

Spies is special. Maybe even world champ one day.

edit: World Champ in MOTOGP

Give Ben more time and I think he may become what many of us hope he will.

An alien to be? Don't know, but these kind of times this early on...on a new bike...and an unfamiliar track...looks promising to me.

testing 1-2-3 testing...... it's just a test folks.... & the 1st 1 of the season to boot. don't read to much into it just yet. the irta test is closest we'll see the true levels of performance until qatar.
