Statesman: MotoGP attendance not likely to match projections

Well...DUH. Their various weekend projections ranged from 161K to 300K.  However, 100K is well below average for U.S. MotoGP events.

Julie Loignon, a spokeswoman for Circuit of the Americas, estimated Tuesday that the three-day attendance for MotoGP, motorcycling’s equivalent of Formula One, would be 100,000. That would likely translate into a race-day crowd of somewhere above 50,000.
<span style="font-size:14px;background-color:rgb(255,255,255);“Right now it looks like about half of what a UT (football) game would be,” said Leah Fillion, a spokeswoman for the city’s transportation department. She said it would be business as usual downtown and that the city is anticipating about 40,000 to 50,000 for the race.<span style="font-size:14px;A study by Don Hoyte, a former economist with the state comptroller, projected 86,000 for the Sunday race and 161,000 for the three-day weekend, April 19-21.

I'm not suprised peeps are staying away,

$60 per day to park the car!!!

Is this for real!!

WTF!!! Its free at shiverstone!!

I'm glad I'm coming over, if only for the experience.

But unless cota's attitude towards the fans change it will be a first and last trip to this track!

I'm going to COTA because my boys made an effort to put the weekend together and the guest list is impressive.  I've been to Laguna and Indy.  Once, I think there was a motorcycle race during a rain shower at Silverstone.  In my opinion, as for ease of ingress and egress, friendliness and an overall comfortable experience, Indy wins hands down!  None of the others even come close.  Everything about that place is easy.  Easy to park, easy to eat, easy to take a piss and the staff are not only friendly, they're actively looking to help.  Unfortunately, it's just not an inspiring venue for MotoGP.  The folks at Indy get an A+ for effort though.  They really put on a great event.  The city of Indanapolis puts on a great event. You never get bogged down trying to get in or out and there's never a giant line for food and restrooms.

All that being said, Laguna IS WHERE IT'S AT!   I plan on making that trip every single year that it's possible for the foreseeable future.  There are some lines, and you're going to do a great deal of walking but the entire weekend has a very special feel that's palpable.

If any of you are interested in a US round at some point in the future and you must decide which, go with Laguna.

Bang on!

I went to the F1 race in November,

There was more people on the Friday F1 than on any Sunday Motogp race day in Laguna or Indy.

There are lots of private parking lots within one mile and they offer free shuttle to the track.

One of them is a Bone Yard called "8 Secundos" or something like that.

Little sketchy but if you leave no valuable onboard, it should be no problems.

CoTA has a shuttle that runs the perimiter of the circuit outside the gates, so technically there are in/out privileges in order to catch the bus so you don't have to walk from turn 1 to turn 11.

I am soooo glad that my buddy from France is bringing an extra P1 parking pass (paddock parking) for me to use.

To be honest, I really don't give two ..... about the parking or the cost.  It is what it is.  All the parking looks close.  The other option is to stay at home.... therefore there is no other option.  So three days of parking is $90 US.  With a car of 5, that's $18 per....no big deal.  Less than any of us will spend the first 2 hours in town on booze.

I'm paying a thousand dollars to fly myself to the race.  I've committed to the weekend regardless of what the parking costs.

They do have a shuttle, and I'm guessing they would use it for Moto GP, but they didn't use it for Grand Am. So, we'll see. The in/out policy I referred to before is that they don;t allow in/outs of cars to and from the lots. They do allow in/outs of fans through the gates.

Also, they had about 60K on Friday for F1. That's not more than a typical MotoGP Sunday, but it's a lot more than the 40-50K it looks like they'll have for their MotoGP Sunday.

Bang on!

Everything I hear about Indy indicates that the way they run the place is a shining example of customer service for any business anywhere. It's just that the road course sucks. Seems like COTA is the opposite.

My point is CoTA knows that motogp is not a big attraction compared to F1 therefore the lack of free transportation to and from the track is not a concern for them.

Parking for F1 was between 100-200 / day depending on which parking lot you were in.

LeviG has threatened to wear a #26 hat, Im thinking of wearing this hat during the AustinGP in solidarity with Rossi fans.

I agree wholeheartedly !

At this point I'm staying home. Its great that some of you can afford the extra expense of being ripped off by COTA's parking rates, but I'm not one of those people. I did, however, have a plan that had a friend dropping me off at the track each day so I thought I had a solution. Unfortunately, after reading a post on another site and then contacting COTA this morning I foind out that they will not allow entrance to the track to any pedestrians whether they have a ticket or not. WTF! Obviously they are forcing fans to pay their parking rates or forcing them to use taxis and then charge the taxis a license fee of some kind to operate at the track apparently. Well COTA can take their track and shove it. I'm sure all of you that are going will have a lot of fun and the track looks awesome, but I refuse to give any more money to an organization that has so little regard for people, especially in these hard economic times.

I purchased a parking pass online with my ticket for $60.00.  That covers parking for 3 days.  They included three parking passes with my ticket and I checked my credit card statement to make sure I was not charged an additional $120.

BTW, I've been to the track for F1 and for the GT races and it was fantastic.  It was easy to drive in and out, no problems, even for F1.  This time I just bought a general admin for Motogp because I end up walking around to see the race from different vantage points.  The view from the two bridges is my favorite.  For seating, the stands at turn 15 are hard to beat.  When I went for GT, because of the small crowd, they let me sit in any grandstand as long as I agreed to give up my seat to the actual seat holder, if they showed.  I'm hoping they will do this for Motogp.

Also, for $20 (at least for GT, did not discover when I went to F1)  you could take an elevator to the top of the tower at the center of the track.  I think it's 20 something stories tall.  The floor at the top is glass.  I did not go up, not a fan of heights.
