MotoGp 2012 Rnd1 Qatar FP.Quali.Predictions

Rossi's best lap time on the GP11 at the end of FP3 last year was almost exactly... like Stoner's best time at the end of FP3 this year, with 200 extra cc to burn.

1:56:479 (Rossi FP1 2011) vs 1:56:474 (Stoner FP1 2012).

So... lap times are still way too high to make any judgement.

They've been mostly testing the new 1000cc bikes, probably tuning the electronics to minimize wheelies in the long Losail accelerations. See also how in the last two minutes those who felt like giving it a push all improved considerably, and with apparent ease. It looked like the last minutes of a QP...

Tomorrrow they'll be going into the 1:55s, and then we see who can really keep up with Stoner.

I was just looking up last year's times.. and noticed the same thing.. Stoner's 2012 FP1 time, same as Rossi's last year.. 1:57.874 2012 FP1 for Rossi this year.. would've been 15th last year for FP1.. I sure hope he's sandbagging.. this is sad..

I'm a lil gunshy rooting for Hayden with the early results now.. he seems to have a good base setting.. and always able to perform in the beginning.. but by FP3 and/or QP.. everyone else improves, he doesn't.. but we'll try this again.. Go Hayden!.. just get in front of Rossi.. puhleeeeeez!

...and please someone who was watching tell me that Nick's fast lap didn't come from getting a tow?

Can't say for certain, but Hayden was in the last group that jumped out front in the remaining 60 seconds or so. Maybe Stoner was getting a tow from Hayden? Haha!

Ducati's bike could be a crap, but the all-hated desmo L-twin seems unbeatable. It's consistently at the top of sheets throughout the years.

But that doesnt mean its a great engine for a race bike. Remember the Aprilia Cube. As we have discussed numerous times, peak hp does not always lead to good lap times. Catching a draft at 200+ mph is much more beneficial to top end speeds than a couple mph in corner exit speed.

Sure I know. But for me, the engines horsepawa is a competition apart!

Yep, Ducati has never lacked for power, but since Honda went to the pneumatic valve train, neither have they. I would guess that Honda is right on par with Ducati, and more reliable.

It seems most of those fast laps at the end came with soft tires... Hayden put on a soft and took 1 full second off his previous times. Rossi used only hard tires. Pedrosa as well. We probably are not going to know anything for sure (apart from Stoner) until warm up...

Just like last year ducati will transfer whatever good adjustments hayden has and put them on to rossi's bike. Then tommorow they will start down the wrong road with haydens bike until rossi catches up and then they will adjust haydens bike till he's close to rossi. Riders don't get slower from practise one to qualifying, BIKES DO. Engineers on bikes are what makes of breaks the riders.

I hope your wrong, Ducati really need to put their best foot forward, no matter the rider. Rossi stayed on hard tires so he's working on race setup. He will be on it tomorrow with soft tires. In fact I think the top 4 runners threw a soft on to achieve those times, it's still cool though to see Hayden's name up towards the top, even if it's only for one session.

tweets suggest Rossi used hard tyre for race prep rear sliding though causing problems.

Hayden Soft tyre,Honda.s got some chatter

Green track got to rubber in

To early to say, but the GP12 appears to be the second bike Rossi has developed that works better for his teammate.

Some fairly ridiculous remarks so early on, however I can understand the enthusiasm.

Analysis of the session is far more interesting, Rossi is working harder than anyone with 14 complete laps far more than Jorge and Stoner who did 9 and 8-seems like the strategies couldn't be any more different. Looks as though Pedders, Spies and Rossi used the hard throughout and all have similar average pace 1.58's-59's, and Ben also who dipped a little more into the 1.57's. Dovi and Cal ran the soft throughout also.

The Ducati is very fast on the straight, matching Honda, which could produce a surprise or two for the race. And Judging by Rossi's comments on the return of tyre wear with these new compounds-ever the hard, we might see a few others implementing a similar race simulation tomorrow.

the question is, how well will the electronics compensate for the rubber degradation?

I bought this app in previous years and found it way too expensive for what you get. The track position graphics are more of a wow factor and are not really that informative IMHO, If it included live video streaming, I'd buy it in a flash.

I tend to agree regarding the track positions, I'd be happy with something that just gave you the lap times to be honest. My two older sons have iPhones and my younger son has an iPad so the one purchase covers all four devices ...not too bad.

Damn Ben stayed on hard tires the entire time and did his fastest laps at the end. Does anyone know if CS and Jlo stayed on the same tires? With Rossi staying on the hard tires the entire session I would say Duc is in huge trouble this year.

WTF? I have the video pass yet FP1 is not available or at least I cannot seem to locate it under "Latest videos."

Anyone able to find the recorded FP1 on the GP website? Last year, sessions were generally posted within an hour or so...
