what happened with Nicky and Spies? I just saw them in the gravel together.

I'll have to watch the race again, but first time through...Rossi, that was nasty. Looked like he was going to take hohay out to be on the podium no matter what.

If anything it was Rossi on the race line, and Jorge was the one that made the contact- he was not expecting Rossi to be in the inside. Great battle, I love when Rossi is back- he can make the race so much more interesting to watch.

Poor Rossi, the old guy just cannot accept the fact that he's beaten -- probably nobody told him,

Completely agreed Woody, great race-for third!! Rossi was never going to give up that position. Best race all season without doubt, shame Jorge was a little slow in the first 2 laps-otherwise could have been for the win.

Rossi had a massive point to prove, nothing to lose, and a new engine. An entertaining battle but more a Clayton's victory than anything else.

Were you guys telling us how Stoner spanked Rossi at Phillip Island last year after Rossi trailed him home?

Awesome stuff by Stoner. Has that ever been done before? First place while everyone else on the same bike comes last?
<

Great race for third today. I love it when Rossi refuses to compromise. He probably took it over the line but then so did Lorenzo so all is fair. At the end of the day it was more than a battle for third place. There was significant other factors going on between the 2 riders that meant that both were prepared to take it to a level that is a little bit beyond politically correct racing.

Nice ride by Dovi on Dani's bike.

Good ride by Stoner to control the gap whilst taking both of them to the limit on lap times.

I am impressed with Spies in regards to his overtaking moves. Always fair, confident and precisely executed.

Unfortunately for Hayden it looks like the bike is moving away from him again rather than coming closer.

Bautista is riding well and I am starting to be impressed by him.

It appears to me that there is a core of riders that are starting to really develop themselves in the mid field. If the regulations can even up the equipment a bit more than I think we may start to see some good racing down the field with less gaps to the front.

Funny how bias creates a reality warp.

They both had the new engine, and if anything it is Lorenzo who had (and still has) a massive point to prove. It showed in the way he had to accept the fight with Rossi. If he wanted to play it safe, he could have stayed behind, just as Rossi did at P.I. last year.

But no, because Lorenzo had nothing to lose and a lot to prove against Rossi. This kind of battle is what people like Jarvis wanted to avoid at all costs in the Yamaha camp, until the title was secured at least...

Have another look, maybe get what a "spanking" means a little better.

Just to clarify. I was cheering at the racing - even when Lorenzo pushed Rossi onto the dirt.

Well ridden by stoner, he took a gamble with softer tyres and brought it home. I thought dovi didn't perform today but stoner was on the softer tyres which held up.

So you thought Lorenzo wasn't trying? Why put himself at such risk then? He can't lose the championship now that dani was out.

I'm fairly indifferent about both Lorenzo and Rossi, and the commentators mentioned during the race that Lorenzo had gone back to an old engine. No warped reality here.

IMO Lorenzo is desperate for the title - Rossi is desperate to beat his upstart team-mate on the same bike while he has the chance. As I said, not sure much can be read into this battle. Anyway, congratz to his fans.

No, I think Lorenzo was trying VERY hard to beat a "healthy" Rossi. I just think Rossi was trying a little bit harder. Lorenzo can still lose the championship, however slight the chance may be.

Strange, if really Lorenzo qualified with the new engine and raced with the old one... Does not make sense since Pedrosa is out, but I suppose that is difficult to know for people outside his garage. What is sure is that Rossi certainly did not overtake him in a straight line, so...

I have to disagree again on who is desperate to demonstrate what. Certainly it was important for Rossi to beat Lorenzo, especially in this kind of way, before the season was over. But he just did it, and this is exactly what has to be read into that battle.Lorenzo has not yet been capable to do the same, against Rossi. So the pressure is all on him, moreover now as a world champion who claims to be the new #1, etc.

I wish every race was like that but at the front... Even if Rossi wasn't there. A little paint swapping never hurt anyone. Win at all cost. That's what top line sport is.

Some have been comparing rossi v lorenzo in this race to the stoner laguna seca incident and gibernau last corner pass, but I disagree as he was always in control of the bike and on a feasible line; laguna seca was a racing incident where he was less in control of the bike, the gibernau pass was the one closest to the edge.

I entirely agree about spies; since his track record is of consistent (one could say relentless) improvement, he will be a major threat next year unless the yamaha engine is really no good next year which seems less likely after today.

shame Jorge was a little slow in the first 2 laps-otherwise could have been for the win.

Valentino could perhaps have obviated this problem by not letting stoner and lorenzo past in the first place; I seem to recall him being ahead of both on the grid, and being passed by stoner (!) not in a straight line.

He fought very well and in a spectacular fashion at the end though I would obviously agree, as he has done so many times, even more impressive in view of his injuries etc etc.

Our commentators mentioned Lorenzo's switch back to an old engine. I read somewhere that it was because he was getting the wobbles on the new engine. May be true, may not be. It's not a major point of difference, anyway.

I don't disagree if you think that in "one-on-one" battles Rossi has the edge over Lorenzo. I think Rossi's racecraft in this area is superior, but Lorenzo is young and will likely improve.

I just reiterate that I think Rossi's desire to beat Lorenzo is slightly greater than Lorenzo's desire to beat Rossi - at least until the championship is secured.

A bit of excitement at last..!! Great battle between Vale and Jorge for 3rd, and well done to Stacey Moaner.

This was a big battle between Valentino and I, two warriors with the killer instinct." Jorge Lorenzo wasn't happy with some of the strong moves made by his team-mate Valentino Rossi during their thrilling battle for third place in the closing stages of Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix.

Whilst some in the Yamaha pits might have preferred Rossi to give Lorenzo a little extra space, given he is firmly on course for the 2010 championship, the pair instead battled as if they were title rivals.

Although they had swapped places earlier in the race, the real action between them kicked off on the penultimate lap - when Lorenzo passed Rossi on entry to the first underpass, only for Rossi to slice back ahead of him on the exit.

Lorenzo then successfully lunged for the inside at a following left hander, but Rossi immediately barged back up the inside on the next right - the pair bumping fairings in the process.

Rossi guarded the entry to the underpass corner more carefully on the last lap, but Lorenzo still found a way around him soon after.

Once again, Rossi instantly responded, parking his M1 on the apex of a slow left corner in what proved to be the decisive pass.

"This was a big battle between Valentino and I, two warriors with the killer instinct," said Lorenzo.

"I have to say that at some points I do not think he was completely fair, we were both on the limit but some of his moves were maybe a bit too much and he touched me and pushed me wide when I don't think it was right.

"We are team-mates, I am fighting for the Riders' Championship but we are both fighting for the Teams' and Manufacturers' Championship as well and we have to remember this."

Lorenzo's team manager Wilco Zeelenberg unsurprisingly backed his rider.

"It was a great battle between the two strongest riders in the world but they are team-mates and Valentino took too many risks and touched Jorge a couple of times, which should not have happened when Jorge is fighting for the championship," said the Dutchman.

STFU ^ You can have the title and the Moaner one too of Casey from now
