Please CURVEY!!!...Just remember that Doohan never ever had an adversary like Valentino Rossi to contend with!!! Which Casey Stoner had and will have in future years!!! So CURVE you can never ever compare Doohan to Stoner as Stoner will always WIJN hands down in as far as the opposition that he has to face!!!
And CURVEY...Mr. Stoner IS A LEGEND “IN MY MIND’!!!...AND THAT IS BECAUSE; HE’S HAS BEATEN VALENTINO ROSSI AND THAT IS LIKE BEATING 15 WCP'S IN THE 500CC ERA!!

so is hayden a "legend"also then ?

ignorance is bliss

CSCVAW calls Criville hopeless, yet his love child Stoner has achieved the same amount of success; (world championship wise) ..

You say Doohan would have been nothing if Rainey was there, well if Doohan wasn't there, Criville would be the five time world championship legend we're debating right now..

MotoGP is a fickle industry and many things can go your way or go against you but as far as i see it, every rider that makes it into the premier class of racing deserves to be there and is a legend in their own right..

Melandri will definitely give Stoner a BIG hurry up next season. Kid can ride.

Dude, I appreciate your extreme rampant fanboyism and agree that Stoner is something special. But to compare him to Doohan or Rossi right now is premature.

Casey may prove to be as great as them. But he has a few years yet before he does. Right now, he's the man to beat.

But he's got a long way yet to go to prove true GREATNESS.....that is defined by being the BEST over TIME.

And whatever you do, don't attempt to boost Casey by dissing Doohan. Doohan was a TRUE great.

Sorry, but WTF?

Doohan competed against, and beat people like Rainey, Schwantz, Gardner, Lawson and many others who may be considered legends or greats within their own right. Between the 4 I list (and that does not include the later Doohan years) there are 8 WC's, how can that not be a quality field

One must also remember that the year of Rainey's last World Title he was 50 or so points behind Doohan when Doohan crashed and suffered the severe leg injury. Yet, he came back way to early and still tried to score the points necessary to win the WC.

What Mick achieved despite the severity of his injuries stands him alone as one tough motherfcker while that with his results make him a superior legend than many if not all modern riders can ever hope to be.

As an Aussie I cannot and will not at this stage call Stoner a legend as it just does not sit right and personally, I bet he would not even consider himself nowhere near it either.

well said.

Best way to put it is that Casey has had an outstanding season and caught the attention of manyBUT he doesn`t get `legend` status yet.If he comes up trumps in the next season or two then he may well deserve that tag and I can honestly see him doing it ,though lets not forget,in MGP nothing is certain.

We have stars and we have superstars in this sport (like every other sport)!

Casey = star
Doohan = superstar

Casey will be required to complete a number of years of excellence to jump to the next category ... IMO!

Any guy who is racing at this level is allready a legend .... I'm not sure but I think its a bit more of a feat than posting on this forum ???

Well said that man!!

Hmmm? I thought this was a thread about Marco....

I don't think anyone can speculate until we actually see him in action on the rossa. Casey used to crash an awful lot on the Honda but has had a fantastic non-crashing season. I'm hoping he'll sort himself out in time for next season and that he'll give casey and everybody on track a good run for their money. Marco's a brilliant rider, but he needs to get in there with a stronger head. And Rog, thanks for pointing out what a lioness I can be in defence of my boys but really comments like 'he's done nothing in 4 years' don't even merit my attention.

Oh...and as for that picture of a battered woman posted by curve...that's in incredibly bad taste man. Women get battered and beaten every day. Sometimes to death. If you think that's funny get some help.

I cant believe the .... I'm reading about Doohan! The guys track record was amazing, I followed the guys career for a long time. Doohan had no competition in his championship years ? don't make me laugh, ever heard of Daryl Beattie? Alex Criville? Luca Cadalora? these guys were pushing right to the limit to get near Mick, and like them or not, they DID all beat him head to head. Oh yeah and that nobody, Max Biaggi beat him first time out.

Mick made folk look second hand because he had to win races by a mile and break people mentally. When Rossi went to Honda, Burgess said the difference between Rossi and Doohan was that Rossi understood that you can win a race by a few bike lengths, you dont have to finish half amile infront of everyone else!

On the subject of Doohan, as much as I was a huge fan of him for years, the guy could out whinge anyone, even when he was winning. Remember the cartoons in MCN of Doohan retiring to run a tow truck business because he was always whinging about people following him because they couldn't get in front and pull away from him?

Anyhoo, back on track, I don't see Melandri having the beating of Casey next year. Casey has taken the Ducati and made it his own the way only a few guys can. Melandri will probably take a few wins on the Duke, but, Casey is going to be a hard man to beat next year, you don't dominate the way he has without gaining a huge psycological advantage, not only over others, but in your belief in yourself. (unless your name is Freddie Spencer)

I guess it depends on how you define "legend".

Bang on....

I agree with everything you said. Except: Yo man, what's with the Freddie dig?

Anyway, yeah, you are right. To say Doohan didn't have any competition is rather crazy.

Sorry Bikergirl, I know this is a thread about Marco. (It probably doesn't matter though; she's just ignoring us anyway, she only notices that handsome man Roger).
