Fanciful...yes.
Correct BG! Last year when he signed with Duc. They had announced it's a two year contract. But there was a clause written in for the first year. which would allow him to walk if things goes wrong. Thats way he has to complete two more races. After which there will be no obligation between the two parties.

I had not heard any details of the contract other than it was for 2 years. I had presumed there must be something both ways in the contract, with performance clauses that give ducati an out, and penalty clauses that cost ducati if they punt him too early as well perhaps as payment that only kicks in after completing a certain number of races. Unfortunately there would appear to be little chance of marco suddenly getting it together in the next 2 races, particularly given how dejected the poor fellow looked in the parade at assen. I guess it is not unreasonable on his part to try to salvage something at least financially, since he left gresini where he had done well on occasion somewhat acrimoniously to take the ducati ride. I for one hope he gets a good ride next year, but it seems highly likely any contract will be much less lucrative.
I suppose the other question is whether sete gibernau or other replacement riders would have been in shape straight away to run the next 2 races.
