Lorenzo more likeable this year?

Interesting that you think that Rossi is an easy going fun loving character. I would suggest that someones nature is more truthful when they are under duress. Rossi has shown this season that he is anything but easy going and fun loving.

I would characterise him more as a fiercely competitive, vindictive and arrogant showman who knows how to work those around him to achieve his goals. I would compare him more to a religious cult leader who's blinded followers hold him up as the centre of the universe and all that is knowledgeable and good which is in stark contrast to those not under the spell who see his actions and manipulations as purely selfish.

With one exception - none of these guys are comfortable with 35 lbs of video camera, shoved in their face, and the xenon light shining in their eyes, and that guy is Edwards. They're racers, not actors. Rossi has always to my mind "played the part" in a very calculated way. I don't fault him that as it goes with part when you're placed in the position of being a tin god for the masses. His on camera persona has always reminded me certain Saturday morning children's show hosts from the '60s - which seems to have worked well with his target audience.

The fact that Jorge can come out with a smile after a big crash makes him more likable, the poor dude was limping on sunday morning but was still smiling, signing autographs and taking pictures with his fans

What are you referring to?

Have you watched an interview this year?

Did you witness him throwing his toys out of the cot and having to leave Yamaha?

Have you heard him call all of the other riders that are whipping his arse, "......."?

I bet when you see an actor interviewed you think you are seeing the 'real' person. Guess what, they are acting! Rossi is always acting when he is in front of the camera. When the camera is not there I guarantee you he is a different person. Fun loving easy going people do not get to the top of the game in any sport. You need to be ultra competitive, self obsessed and singularly focused.

Sometimes I think you are drunk on your own biases and don't watch the sport. Rossi is flawed but not Satan.

I think the personality that I described is the very reason he has been so successful throughout his career. Nice guys hardly ever come first and never do it 9 years out of 15. Thinking the Rossi is fun loving and easy going is being blind on bias. It is because I do watch the sport rather than the entertainment that I have the view I have.

I think Rossi generally plays up quite a bit off camera as well as on. He obviously has a serious side as well which has helped to get him where he has been.

Alex Briggs has provided insights from time to time and an interesting one that has come up recently is that Rossi talks to his team in the same calm manner if he is in 16th position as if he was in 1st position.

Rossi is a phenomenal leader. He has many good attributes which have been promoted by many over the years. There are few I disagree with. However myths are created from one sided perspectives. There is another side that is not all smiles and back slaps. In the politicial world of MotoGP this other side is as much a part of his success as the positive one.

i would tend to think he is a goose off camera aswell as on. there are a lot of stories kicking around about him on the piss that sound pretty interesting, aswell as the stories of when he was younger playing with his mates around his home town. when the helmet goes on, however, i have no doubt that he is a calculating, ruthless dude, who would run over his own mother if it meant getting ahead.

wasnt this thread about lorenzo????

Mental, yes Rossi has played the political game to his full advantage in the past. That is half the game now.

Back to topic, yes I've found Lorenzo more likeable this year. I haven't missed the moon landing. Lorenzo has had to work hard and he has a great attitude towards this side of things. He was a bit wayward in his criticism of simoncelli earlier this year (blaming simoncelli for his own stuffup in 2010) and his nanny comments at the time but other than that, he's been good.
