Jorge Lorenzo has confirmed to MCN that he is unlikely to make the next pre-season testing following a broken right hand in a motocross training accident on February 12.

Lorenzo, 22, was speaking exclusively to MCN at a Dainese exhibition in Paris last week.

He said: “This is the worst injury that could happen to me, it is like a footballer losing the ability to kick a ball.”

Lorenzo is doubtful that he will make the next pre-season test at Qatar but is hopeful for a comeback at the first MotoGP race in Qatar on April 11.

The star suffered a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal and a displaced thumb.

Damn, and there was me in another thread telling TP70 not to count out Lorenzo just yet. Hope he get's fixed up quick but having suffered a broken hand myself i know how long these things take to heal and get full movement back.

That sounds painful.

Get well soon Lorenzo!

He'll be fine, its important to be healthy when he starts the year... he goes okay at Qatar anyway and there are 3 other Yamahas out there gathering data.

He could get data from the Tech 3 bikes perhaps.
From Rossi's M1. Not any more.

Nah he'll get it no problem. They wont share race-weekend data but im pretty sure the deal is he gets the testing stuff & his engineers get it all anyway.

I can't believe that Lorenzo is that inept or that Yamaha would let him float away to tenth place. He'll get what he needs to be as fast as he can be. He has to stop with the injuries though.

I think he will be fine when season starts, he still has more than a month to heal his hand, and hopefully he'll be ready for racing in Qatar.

If the fracture involved his first metacarpo-phalangeal joint this can be quite problematic; he apparently did at least dislocate that joint.

Not according to autosport.com!!!

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>Jorge Lorenzo is adamant that he will take part in the final MotoGP winter test in Qatar despite his injuries, but will not be pushing for quick times.

The Yamaha rider had to sit out the last test at Sepang having sustained a hand injury when he crashed a motocross bike while training.

His management had suggested Lorenzo would probably not be fit for the Losail test next week, but the Spaniard has decided he needs to get back on track as part of his recovery.

"Yes, I'm going to the Qatar test," Lorenzo told Motosprint. "I've taken this decision for several reasons, including the need to understand how my hand is doing, but certainly not to set the quickest lap time.

"I have thought about forgoing testing and going straight to the first race. But I feel like going to the tests. I'd like to recover some feeling, some confidence, basically I want to get back in touch with my bike. Even if it's just a couple of laps, I want to see how I feel on the saddle."

He admitted that the injury is likely to compromise his form in the season-opener at Losail in mid-April too, but is optimistic it will not spoil his title bid.

"I think I won't be well prepared when we get to the first race," said Lorenzo. "I won't be, and neither will be my bike.

"In any case I don't want to get disheartened. I carry on thinking positive, since the season is long: 18 grands prix are a lot of races, we need to think long term. As for the first race, I will try to limit the damage as much as possible - that would already be a positive thing for me."

Lorenzo said that starting the season carrying an injury would be a new experience for him.

"This is the first time I've hurt myself during the winter preparations, when there's testing, with the championship nearing," he said. "This is a new situation for me. This is an injury that takes a long time to recover from, it needs time and patience.

"The incredible thing is that sometimes you have big crashes while going quick and you don't hurt yourself at all, while this time I hurt myself plenty while going at 30km/h. The real problem is that I crashed on the asphalt. I was in a turn, the bike lost grip and I found myself down all of a sudden. I put down my hand and broke the first metacarpus. It's the right hand, the one you accelerate with.

"From a medical point of view, I can try to get some running in Doha. But I must go slow, and that's what I will do. I will try to think about everything except lap times. Neither mine nor the others'.

"Movement of the finger is still limited, and the arm has lost quite a lot of muscle tone. But this is normal, I'm not worried about that."

Yes, i fractured the 5th metacarpal just above the knuckle and while the bone healed in 5 to 6 weeks i still have not got full movement over a year later even though i had 4 month's of psyio. Surgical tendon release is/was an option but these operations quite often make thing's worst i was told. I hope for his sake his injury is not like this .

if he does turn up at the last test whats the point in going slow n risking aggravating his injury

Because in the long run of the championship, which he wants to contest, 2 or 3 points is much better than zero.

agree but that comments about the upcoming test in Qatar & not Qatar Rnd 1
i'd save myself to be near 100% fitness for race one rather than risk a go slow in the test

He said it right here

He needs to dust off the cob webs. But more importantly to get a feeling how riding with the injury is going to be during the first race.

Some kind of heavenly revelation you got there?

According to Yamaha there will be datatransfers, just not directly between them on the race weekends. Right now they are working on the last development pieces and base settings. No doubt it's not favorable for Lorenzo that he doesn't get to adjust his base setting but what ever useful data they gather at Quatar he will get access to.
