Rossi set for Bayliss Superbike duel
Eurosport - Wed, 17 Dec 12:27:00 2008

MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi has agreed to a one-off Superbike race against Troy Bayliss, according to reports in Spain.

Rossi eyes rallying future
Solo Moto magazine claims the Italian will take on Bayliss in a head-to-head battle on March 14 in Qatar, saying the deal is "said and done".

The duel will take place during the weekend of the second round of the 2009 Superbike World Championship at the Losail circuit.

Rossi is expected to race a Yamaha R1 - as used by factory riders Tom Sykes and Ben Spies in 2009 - while Bayliss will be on the familiar Xerox Ducati.

Bayliss retired from the World Superbike scene after romping to his third championship in 2008 on the Ducati.

The Australian's dominance of an increasingly competitive series earned him the Rider of the Year award from the well-respected Italian magazine Moto Sprint ahead of Rossi, who won his sixth world championship in MotoGP's premier class, his eighth overall.

The 29-year-old Rossi is thought to be unhappy at the snub, and has agreed to the race in a bid to hammer home his supremacy.

Rossi recently said he was keen to take Bayliss on one-versus-one, telling Corriere dello Sport: "If there was an opportunity and the right date then I would race there tomorrow.

"I like World Superbikes to be mad, I like to watch it and I'd love to ride in it, the problem is the dates.

"I do not know when, but I hope that I can make a race in WSB. I am sad that I would not be able to race against Bayliss on track now because I would like to challenge him on a superbike. Maybe, if I ask him he might even come back for one race for the challenge."

There has been no official confirmation from either rider.

You're such a fuckbag, Curvey.

This is more or less exactly the same rumor that circulated a month ago, except now the news comes from Spain rather than Italy. And judging from the football and motorsport news I read, Spanish news is the least trustworthy (no offense, but everything is biased or purposely leaked or inaccurate (and when I say "everything," is a massive generalization)). Still no confirmation from either rider.

Some guy at Marca probably read this rumor in the Italian tabloids, found the scheduling bit interesting, discovered that the Qatar round on 14 March doesn't conflict with any MotoGP tests or races and suddenly he's got a real story on his hands.

I'll be skeptical of it until Rossi officially makes a statement saying he's in. How hard could it be to "persuade" Bayliss to come back for one weekend? If Rossi does announce he's in, I'll be hugely aroused. You'll probably be able to see it from Texas, California or across the pond. If not, I'll post pictures (in-pants, pitching tent pictures, this is almost a family site).

They should all be shot, ya sure it would be a great race to watch but I don't see the point. We all know Rossi is better than Bayliss. Lets think back!! Who kicked who's ... when Bayliss came to Motogp?

I don't think Rossi would risk picking up and injury before his season has even started. It would be more believable if this race was to "take place" at seasons end

If it does happen I believe it is going to be apart of a regular WSBK weekend. So Spies, Haga and Biaggi will all have their chance to get into the fight.

IF, and I mean a strong IF, they do this, they should start Rossi and Bayliss at the back of the grid, lights go out and whomever finishes highest wins the duel.

But as I see it now, this is just another BS story started by the drama loving Italian tabloid bike press. Still a good move, get the idea out there started, even if a lie and see if the players bite on it.

Yeah, lets have watch them duel through traffic for 10th when they could easily be at the front of the grid dueling for the win.

The 'news' is actually old and the rumor started from an interview of Italian journalist Paolo Scalera to Valentino Rossi during the Jerez tests. In this interview Rossi said he would LOVE to do a superbike race any time, and he really would have done Portimao if the calendars did not conflict. And then he says he would like it even more if Bayliss was present. That's all he actually said. The interview covers many other topics like F1, taxes, rallies, and so on. For those who understand Italian, the full audio recording of that interview is here

You have to wonder if Rossi holds a bit of a grudge against Bayliss for winning (as a wild card no less) at Valencia in 2006 the same weekend he fell and lost the championship. Like having your thunder stolen twice in one weekend.

I noticed the article mentioned the old Transatlantic Match Race series from the olden days. That was a kick-... series. I still have the old VHS tapes of those buried somewhere in a basement in Brooklyn.
