My choice is ANT WEST. He stepped into that supersport ride last season and won...aw .... I can't use that, it involves winning. He had at least one very devoted fan, maybe that counts?

Oh, now I know it! SHINYA! He's never won a thing in the new millennium, so wins can't cloud our judgement. Got the demented/devoted fan thing covered too.

Well keeping in mind that if you are shiny, like a star, that means you are the best, and those teeth are definitely shiny. Ah, nicely done Pete. I may have to reconsider which American I root for is actually the GOAT.

I'd like to think so Pete but my life's totally ....... My only remaining joy was watching motogp. I didn't even mind staying up all night and ruining my relationship with the wife just to see the shiny bikes go around in circles. Now even that's no fun anymore with only two guys in the race, that is untill one of them bins it while leading around lap 7, leaving a single competitor time trial for the remaining 19 laps as I cry into my blanket alone on the lounge.

its always been the way, close racing to the line with more than 2 riders always has been rare

I'll go one step further - if you want to check the archived results in motogp or wherever you will find that 10 to 15 years ago you were lucky to have the whole field finish on the same lap - it was common for guys to be lapped twice (this was due to the customer spec cheapo Yamahas filling up the grid).

The distance between the top few riders and the bottom was massive and racing is as close now as it’s ever been if not more so.

What we didn't have back then was hordes of fans jumping on the internet and lamenting something that didn't exist anyway (a bit like religion). To put my slant on it, close racing is when Vale wins, anything else sucks. It just shows that people cans be fans of a racer but not racing.
