<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (J4rn0 @ Jan 7 2009, 11:49 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>That was only an example, I still think it was correct... I know European Football is played a lot in campuses and by many young people in the USA, women included, but has it become a mainstream sport? Big time every Sunday on TV? I doubt it, in spite of all the efforts made to launch it since the '70s--remember Pele finished his career in the USA, but even him did not draw big crowds...

I agree 100 percent. I just wanted to make a point that at least some of us follow footy.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (The California Kid @ Jan 7 2009, 12:20 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Growing up in the US I was never into soccer as a kid. Today its a differnt story i never thought footy could get my blood pumping the way it does (this only applies to the BPL) i love going to the local english pub on weekend mornings and watch Liverpool kick some ... like they will on saturday against arsenal! but thats only because most of the players in the BPL are some of the best in the world. The MLS bores the hell out of me its just not the same. the British Premiere League is the equivalent to Moto gp, The MLS is the equivalent to watching a track day

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (SackWack @ Jan 7 2009, 07:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>I disagree, certain parts of culture has everything to do with marketing. Pop culture is largely based on marketing, look at our President-elect
<

Pop culture is invaribly ephemeral, transitory, based on the vacillating vagaries and fickle fluctuations of fashion thus lending itself to such promotion because it depends on the mass market being in itself 'popular' culture. Motorcycle sport meanwhile, does not prostitute itself so shamelessly and succumb to the mainstream to ensure its survival - which is perhaps what Dorna are attempting to change. After all, sponsorship aside, the revenue from the image rights alone generated by the cult of personality of one Mr Rossi could finance a score of franchises and double the size of the grid this season.....(if only they owned them...just as HRC tried to do). Vale represents one of those rare occasions in history where an individual transcends the sport he participates in. Moto GP should be burgeoning right now with a surfeit of sponsorship - and although the presence of Rossi quadruples attendances and boosts ratings and viewing figures much the way that Sheene revolutionized the appeal of the sport ostensively propelling it into the mainstream during '70s, it was Bazza and Vale as celebrities that became the household names and endure, whilst interest in the sport was for many at best a fad. Only in Italy and Spain I believe is motorcycle sport commercially ingrained on the national psyche. As I say Dorna are on a crusade to broaden this appeal, but whether such a marginal and devoted minority sport can be so brazenly exploited by the global marketing machine remains to be seen. If they succeed, they will suck the soul out of it - and that's always the price for broadening your appeal.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Jumkie @ Jan 7 2009, 11:23 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>I'll bite.

Only those susceptible to the marketing you mean. As in the ongoing marketing campaign of Fox to brain wash its weak-minded & susceptible viewers. Though many were bamboozled by marketing the worst possible pick on the heals of the worse possible performance of any presidency and party in the history of the nation, as evidenced by the many votes they got; luckily, not all were suckered by their propaganda. Hence, the President-elect.

Why would a Republican candidate like John McCain need to market? He's been in the Senate for decades; he has a track record he can't escape.

Marketing exists to convince people they need something they have never owned before; i.e. the latest BMW, iPod, laptop, etc. The only person who needed marketing was the President-elect who has little track record and no experience outside of winning popularity contests.

I hate to say it, but Barack Obama is a product of the affirmative action generation. He's been riding his intellect, 1/2 race, and privileges since the day he was born. The difference between Obama and Bush lies in the source of Obama's privilege. Obama received his privileges from the government and not from his daddy. When you think about it, federal sponsorship of political figures is far more dangerous than private sponsorship, but we can have that debate another time.

Obama is not special or unique he's just like all the other Caucasian-blue-bloods-with-rich-daddies who've come before him except he's new. Obama fits the marketing mold perfectly.

If Obama wants to be exceptional, he needs to start now. He isn't anything worthwhile yet. Whether or not he becomes a figure of importance is up to him. Unlike most people who loathe socialism, I don't care that he has legions of adoring followers who support him irrationally. If he's going to break ties with the devious political forces that got him elected (the Democratic Congress), he will need millions of indoctrinated Kool-Aid sippers.

Tho I voted for him - I have to say that I didn't "get" the whole messianic fever for him. That said, having a few weeks ago finished reading his biography - I'm puzzled by this remark. As far as I've been able to see from all of what I've read, Obama worked for and earned every scholarship and every office he's been in. I don't recall any mention of the govt. ever giving him anything on a platter because of his race. It also bears mentioning that he definitely did not come from an aristocratic family. He was largely raised by white uncle who was totally a blue collar guy. Tho his mom re-married a low-level govt bureaucrat in Indonesia - he never received any money from his step-father after the break-up when he was still pre-teen. Obama's background was strictly working class - making his accomplishments that much more impressive.

Zuke's got a radically revamped 800cc V4 to party with next year. When the going gets tough, the sucks quit.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Jumkie @ Jan 5 2009, 10:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Let us take a look at your sentence above:

How about you using commas and apostrophes appropriately in your stupid ....... sentence above Mr. Grammar Nazi? A comma belongs after "Man"(,) in your first sentence. There is a natural pause there but you forgot the comma. You also miss used the word "your", you should have used 'you're' as in 'you are'. It's a contraction dumb ... (most third graders know the difference). What is up with the comma before the "and" in your second run-on sentence? Don't you know the word "and" is a natural transition word; hence, a natural pause? Putting a comma there is a redundant pause. Moving on, what is up with the list of "ors" in your second run-on sentence? Feel free to mix in a period or a semi-colon in your run-on sentence. Just because you loaded it with transitional words (or/and including some poorly used commas) doesn't make it a complex compound sentence. Did I mention you misspelled the word 'every'? Did you mean to use the word "ever"? Yeah, perhaps you forgot a 'Y'. Most people wouldn't need a spell checker to spell a word that is in the fourth grade spelling book of words 'every' fourth grader in America should know (look it up). I don't think you would do very well on that game show, Are you as smart as a 5th grader? But I suspect you missed it because "ever" is an actual word and wasn't detected by your spell checker. Embarrassingly, it failed to alert you that it did not make sense in your ..... sentence. You still feel like correcting people's grammar? Why don't you go back to school clown?!

Who the .... made you the grammar police? I read a lot of your .... and find a grip of errors, but that's not what bothers me, what really bothers me is the lack of mature thought. But you don't see me harping on it do you? I know you have some background from your dad's experience and all in racing, but you are still very green behind the ears when it comes to meaningful, intelligent, and complex thought. What the .... is it with children these days, you go to school for a few years and now what, you're the English teacher? Well, while you're concentrating on the proper use of nouns and verbs some of us are graduating to high order thinking. I usually give you a pass because you're (or is it your) a Hayden Fan... not today.

I might be the odd one out here, but I like smoking. I quit for a month recently but I prefered smoking, simple as. Sure it can kill me and its a disgusting habit and it can lead to bla bla bla, but I think I'm pretty dispensable in the ways of this world and I could be gone tomorrow anyway.
Non smokers piss me off the most because of their holier-than-thou attitude as if ye guys are going to live forever. Non smokers remind me of those idiots that scream "motorcycles can kill, they ruin the enviroment" They should be banned.
Everything should be done in moderation even moderation. So I smoke and get pissed and have a good time as often as I can. I also keep fit by training hard. I live my life as if tomorrow will indeed be my last, as the proverb goes, we're not here for a long time but a good time.

How to Save MotoGP?

I got the great idea that all will love.

We clone Valentino Rossi and in 16-20 years he will be again dominating the sport. You can make 20 or so Rossiclones and you'll have at least 10 years of Rossi action.

Brilliant.

And yet you failed to realize the hidden genius. I used the political playbook of the anti-Bush movement to mock myself for being dumb enough to get involved in the conversion. Such acts of selfless depravity are supposed to lead to sainthood.

All you have to do is insult your own intelligence by making baseless contradictory remarks that cannot be proven individually untrue. Then you mock yourself by simultaneously mentioning all contradictory elements. If only I had a TV show, I'd be rich!

I think the playbook goes: 1. insult the Pres family 2. make baseless accusations of corruption based upon background 3. claim they are privileged and undeserving 4. call for a vague plan of action 5. claim the President has never delivered to the standards of your vague plan 6. insult the followers by invoking the name of a notorious and scandalous madman (Dems choose Hitler, I like Jones). You've been made aware of their tactics. You can't claim ignorance anymore.

Since I showed such humility in my original post, I'm going to allow myself to indulge in some gloating.

God, I'm good. Don't forget to copy this response.

I hope you've realized I'm also using the ultimate liberal cop out----claiming you don't understand my art or the boldness of my social critique. Such criticism of Obama is really very cutting edge. I criticized his whiteness and his blackness in the same post----REVOLUTIONARY AND OBJECTIVE!!!!

Why are you hating on my artform, Jumk? I'll send you some flowers and you can go put them on Joe McCarthy's grave. Will that fix everything?

For ....'s sake, I want to talk racing. This was a semi-decent forum that had actual race talk. but because I made a low attempt at trying to comment on a fellow members grammar, and because this forum if full of people who do not use their heads before posting or use the Personal Message option, they make this place ....... useless. Why did I leave last October? Because the political .... being discussed was wiggling itself into each and every thread or and post and pissed me off. I came back slowly as the election ended and thought it was fine and dandy, but you people need to just shut the .... up and talk racing.

Ben, Mods, I really think you need to evaluate your stance on political discussion. I do not call for it to be banned, as it will still rear it's ugly head, but dammit, it needs a place of it's own.

I call for all posts dealing with politics in this thread to be deleted, and if needed, suspensions handed out (I'll nominate myself as I seemingly started this .........). This .... tears apart this forum, and I really think advertisers and possible new members will choose elsewhere (like Autosport.com) because of this .... we do.
