Nicky Hayden confirmed on eurosport that he'll carry the number 1 plate on his Repsol Honda next year. I think it's great to see that particular tradition being kept alive. I think Rossi might have been the only guy who didn't carry the no 1 plate when he was champion, maybe schwantz? If anyone can clarify that one......

Schwantz rode with the no. 1 plate.

Must admit it'll be nice to see the no. 1 plate being used again.

Barry Sheene carried No.7
kenny R Snr - No.1
Freddie S - No.1
Wayne G - No.1
Wayne R - No.1
Kevin did carry No.1 but any for a few races then No.34
Mick D - No.1
Alex - No.1
kenny R Jnr - No.1
Rossi - No.46
Hayden - No.1

I can't think on anyone else.

kevin ran No.1 all year. My bad.....

He earned it, he can use it. That's "one" of the perks of being a champion. (But I will miss that familiar 69 plate).

Hmmm..........wonder if Hayden is doing this to play mind games with Rossi? i.e. it will always be in his competitors face next season that he's number 1.

Must admit, its gonna be weird seeing it on the track!

Why does he use 69 anyway (apart from the obvious reason
<
)........I know Jamie Whitham used 69 'cause it was the same number when the bike was upside down crashing
<
.............thats what he said on Eurosport anyway! heh

i heard it was his dads number

Yeah there's a psycological reason behind it for sure. I'll bet the Repsol garage will feature a few large 'Hayden no 1' graphics. It'll be hard to miss who the defending champ is.
No 1 looks the same upside down too

Yeah 69 was Earl's number many years ago. Because Earl crashed so much they gave him 69 as a joke so they always knew it was him when we was upside down. I don't really think its a psychological trick or tactic to run #1. I think its just what he wanted to do. I would and plan to when I win my first expert class championship. I have won 4 novice class championships but I didnt have the opportunity to carry the #1 plate because they promptly moved me up to expert the following year.

I think that the media puts to much stock in psychological tactics. Sure you can say that Rossi toyed with the heads of Biaggi and Gibernau. But for heavens sakes I think a field mouse could frustrate both of those guys. Biaggi has always set himself up to fail, and Gibernau has wanted to kick Rossi's ... so bad he does it to himself.

In 2005 Sete lead more laps than anyother rider, but yet won no races. Why? He was trying to hard, usually at the end of races.

I don't think Rossi will need any reminder that he lost the championship

Hayden should wear #1 with pride, lets face it the only reason Rossi didn't was because he's so supersticious

Yes, he mentioned this on "The Tonight Show". It was his dad's number, and he used it in honor of his dad's support for him. I think he also mentioned this in the movie: The Doctor, The Tornado, & The Kentucky Kid.

As far as your "field mouse" comment. You had me rolling with laughter. I disagree with you about them, but it sure was funny.

The media's job is to talk. That's what they sit around all day cooking up; what better than to cook up stuff that can't be verified or seen...

It up to us, the spectator, to discern and decide for ourselves…

In one way it's good that people still use the traditional No.1 to show they are "king of the track" - but Hayden isn't king of the track...Rossi is.

I think that when you pick a number that should be the number you stick with throughout your whole motorcycle career, who knows one day it may well bring you luck!

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Alex @ Nov 8 2006, 05:29 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>but Hayden isn't king of the track...Rossi is.

well, everyone could say who is the king of the track. If you're a rossi fan, you would probably say rossi then. That goes for hayden fans too.

If by “king” you mean what the monarchy is today—a superseded, passé, out-of-date, out of commission, outmoded, and no longer in use, then yes I agree with you, Rossi is the "king".

No. A king is a leader of something, top of the hill if you like.

Don't get me wrong, Hayden's done very very well this season but Rossi has just had too much bad luck. Let's face it mate, Rossi would of run away with his championship if he didn't retire from mechanical and technical problems. How many races did he retire from that...3? 4?

Hi cyclops - pretty mean talk about the guy who lost the world championship, he still won more than 2x as many races than slick nick - passe' - out of date - that's big talk - are you from texas - nicky should enjoy his luck, his nr 1, and the status - he won't have it very long

Mindless cheerleading. I see we are still stuck and just can't rap your mind around the fact that Rossi lost. Boohoo. All the attempts at rationalizing it won't bring back the championship. Its over, Rossi lost, Hayden won. Deal with it.

This is called rational-lies.
