F1 : 2013

Sorry but I completely agree with Cliche, the tyres did spice things up and make a difference at first. Now all they're doing is stopping people from racing properly, they're too damn busy protecting the tyres, that's not what racing is meant to be about!

F1 just doesn't do it for me anymore, and I'm sad to say that after so long as a fan of it. They've ruined it one way and another over the last few years, shame on them for that!

Love him or loathe him, Vettel is a triple world champion and you don't get to be that by not being ruthless, determined and talented, oh and he's my favourite. ;) He got some bad press last race for what he did but do you think in the same situation say... Alonso would be any different? Of course not, he has a tame team mate who leaps out of the way for him when he's told to, Vettel has a team mate who fights back when he can and that leads to conflicts like we saw last race, if Alonso and Webber were team mates you'd see the exact same kind of thing happening I reckon.

No humor from people from NW Europe!

Thats why they are sad all the time!

Yeah i know , none of them will likes that! :p

Holding up Eyebrows as some sort of ethical standard by which other drivers should be judged may not make for the strongest argument.  ;)

As a borderline Old Fart, I interpret the word 'champion' as meaning more than 'the ....... who managed to accumulate the most points, never mind how.'  IMO, a worthy Champion (capitalized because it's an honorable title) should, before all else, conduct himself in a manner representing the highest order of sporting ethic.  After that come talent and commitment.  Abject ruthlessness is not something to be admired, and someone who embraces and wields it in the near-sociopathic degree we've unfortunately become accustomed to is no Champion

FWIW, I'm still on the fence regarding Vettel.  His mugging of Webbo wasn't remotely equal to the antics of Schumi, Alonso, Prost and others, but it still reflects poorly on him and his successes.  Does he really want to be the next Schumacher, someone who will always have an asterisk attached to their title count?

I agree on the tyres

But cannot bring myself to Vettel manlove!

That is just taking it too far.

But FWIW if he had taken a different strategy it may have been a different result.

So glad Hammy held out!

Stella job by Jenson given what they have to work with.

Nico? 2nd time in 3 races, beginning to think he may be hard on the gearbox or riding too many curbs this year?

Eyebrows must not be let to dominate, unfortunately he seems to have a good car this year!

I agree, if Schumacher had been the one making the pass instead of Vettel, Webber would have most likely been off the track or in the wall. Vettel hasn't done anything that serious.

The Red Bull boys haven't go along since that infamous coming together in Turkey in 2010, there has been needle between them ever since. It does annoy me when people paint Vettel as the evil villain and Webber as a poor innocent victim. Go back and watch the last race of last season, Webber was asked to help his team mate and did nothing of the sort, in fact he seemed to be obstructing him on purpose and even the team said that, hardly going to make them best friends is it? There is right and wrong on both sides with those two and I can't see them ever being friends and getting along now, we can expect many more struggles between them too I would say as the season unfolds.

I agree with you, being  a champion doesn't mean being an ..... or nasty on track, or it shouldn't but you can't get there by being too nice, it just doesn't happen does it? Well not unless you have the machinery that is head and shoulders above everyone else including your team mate, or a tame team mate like they have at Ferrari.

Don't worry hun, I can admire him enough for both of us ;)

Rosberg is a car breaker, he was just the same at Williams for a while but I thought he'd grown out of it, seems not then.

well who  has been a worthy champion in the past 20 years? räikkönen and maybe häkkinen?

spot on post lyria, still strange though to read so well balanced posts on here ;)

tyres brought the element of preserving and waiting when to push in the race for select moments, which was nice at first because it added another factor. but now its more rolling of the dice and way too many pit stops.

rosberg isn't especially hard on either the gear box or the curbs, ironically its hamilton who takes the straighter/wilder lines through the chicanes and likes to downshift very hard under braking. just a bit of bad luck, really happy though that even if the tyres are crap, they are crap for everyone. cars seem to be fairly balanced this year. there are at least 6-10 cars capable of race wins and even the championship as of now IMO

current ranking ( race trim, quali doesn't matter since at least 2011):

ferrari

red bull

lotus

mercedes

mclaren

Villeneuve was a worthy champion, well in my eyes anyway, but then I'm biased to him as well, got a shed load of stuff signed by him ;) Yes I know, he had his moments too before anyone starts telling me his faults, I'm more than aware of them already thanks.

Raikkonen isn't any better than the others when push comes to shove. Besides in some ways he was gifted that championship by the warring between Alonso and Hamilton at McLaren in 2007. He can be as ruthless as the rest, I still remember him at Spa when someone had crashed and he took a huge risk going through the smoke without lifting, he had no idea if anyone was there, if they had been it would have been a catastrophe. Single minded you see, they all are. I also recall him giving a photographer on the grid a hell of a shove and knocking him to the ground for no good reason anyone could see.

Hakkinen was gifted wins by Coulthard as well, there was one in Australia at the start of the '98 or '99 season, can't recall which off the top of my head but I know it didn't go down well at the time.

So all of them have dubious claims to fame so to speak when you really go into it. Then again they're human and they're hugely competitive, who knows what any of us would do when pushed to the limits they are with so much at stake. I know how competitive I can be and nothing I do even comes close to that kind of pressure!

haha my question was rhetorical.everybodys entitled to pick their favorite driver and results have little to do with it for "real" fans.

i too like some drivers more than others but i'm always trying to give credit where it is due.

like how great villeneuve did in his first years or how puzzling and refreshing to watch alonso was in the michelin shod renault, even though these 2 guys are hardly on my hero list so to speak.

or more recently hamilton who i disliked immensely  during 08-11 but always more than appreciated his driving/racing.

about the tyres: i read that from the barcelona round onwards the tyres will be significantly harder. if the result of that is that the guys can put in more hot laps and we don't see more than 1-2 stops f1 could be headed in the right direction.i'm convinced that if the tyres were decent and the whole drs idea reviewed/scrapped we'd be in for a great time in f1.

The tyres and the DRS really put me of F1, that and the fact the BBC stopped showing all the races live. I HATED the delayed higlights, drove me nuts!!

If they can sort out the tyres, I guess that's one step in the right direction. It should be about the car and the drivers, not the damn tyres. The DRS makes passing way too easy on some tracks (not all I'll grant you). All the gadgets and gizmos just detract from the racing if you ask me and they should be banned I tell you, banned! ;)

we're definately on the same page , i'd take it even further and ask for manual gearboxes and the reintroduction of the ancient technique of heel and toe shifting.much more action and emphasis on driving talent guaranteed

I think my favorite year in F1 was 1967.  The cars were glorious, made fantastic noises and.... lethal.

I'd be quite happy with a modern (safer) version of this magnificent formula.

The mighty Honda RA300 V12.  Even short shifting, its exhaust note can rip a hole in space-time large enough to swallow Belgium.

Ferrari 312.  Another V12, with much more harmonious crankshaft timing, and looks to die for!

The Gurney Eagle, possibly the prettiest F1 car of all time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOwmMLJhj-g

BRM H16, another Ear shredding monster.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFl5wXpAMSA

V8 Lotus 49, getting squirrely at COTA.

Good stuff Geonerd. :) I wasn't watching F1 back in 1967 though I must admit.

Oh me too, manual gearboxes, proper shifting and for goodness sake get rid of all this aero crap that prevents overtaking, then you're talking!!!

I always remember Mika Hakkinen in Monza fluffing a gear change when they were manual and stalling his car, he was leading too and he went into the bushes by the side of the track and had a little cry. I am pretty sure he had no idea we could all see him, bless his heart. Ahh the good old days.

^Weren't the gearboxes the same as they are now when that happened in 99? I mean, I think he just accidentally pressed the shift twice instead of once and locked the rear tyres.

Some series still have the manual gearstick thing going on as a rule, but I don't think it's necessary for modern Formula 1.

I turned on my tv, and there it was, the qualifying live from Spain. Oh man, I had to watch it, now I have to watch the race tomorrow too.  It's an addiction I tell you, an addiction!!

Just found out that powerslide has a F1 topic. Great stuff, Started to follow every race this season, it seems fun but I don't know how much I would

like the team order, I think like the drs it has to be enabled and disabled by the race directions, specially it should be disabled in the 4 or 5 final laps. I wanted Roseberg to

overtake Hamilton in sepang, I like vettel and Raikonen, I think

my dear friend, Cliche hates Alonso, after 4 races I thought he was fast and I liked it, but I dont know if it was the Ferrari or senior eyebrows :D

Cliche aint the only one to hate eyebrows ;)

Hate is too strong a word.

Massive dislike is the word we're looking for. Maybe not even that anymore, if Ferrari and him start behaving like the champions they strive to be I'm the first to cheer.i just respect and love the sport too much to have it kicked and treated with disrespect.

Rhetorical question: how come webber is so far back? Again, in a "perfect " car?

Grosjean looking good since he got the kimi parts.

Nows the time to prove he's worthy of equal equipment. The raw speed has always been there imo
