Valentino Rossi gave a typically witty reply when asked why F1 continues to have a bigger worldwide following than MotoGP, even though MotoGP has 'cooler characters and a better show'.
“I think yes. F1 is the number one motorsport in the world even though in recent years, and especially this year, the races are very boring,” replied the reigning six time MotoGP champion, who has tested for Ferrari on numerous occasions since 2004. “Also F1 has all the big car manufacturers in the world.”
The Italian superstar then smiled as he added: “All the people follow the F1 races - but more than half are asleep!”
After the laughter had died down, Rossi's Fiat Yamaha team-mate and title rival Jorge Lorenzo gave a more practical reason for the audience imbalance.
“When you go outside your home and you look in the street there are eight cars for every two bikes. This is the problem,” commented the young Spaniard.
I always thought that logically MotoGP should have more fans than F1. 8 cars for every 2 bikes is a notable point. But F1 aren't cars! they aren't something you can decide to buy one day and drive on the streets if you find your self enjoying and really into F1. What I'm trying to say is that if you like soccer, you can buy a football. MotoGP, you buy the bike.
The problem is, MotoGP is under-rated and not promoted as well as F1. If the tables turned and people took the time to sit down and see how exciting superbike racing really is, things would be much different. My proof is that every person I sat with and made them watch WSBK or MotoGP did really appreciate what they were watching. Then you got the ignorant F1 fans who flip the channel when a MotoGP race is on cause they think they're way too good and superior to watch it. I personally would never flip the channel when a F1 race is on. The gaps have been ridiculous this season, but I'm really trying to make an attempt in trying to enjoy it.
