They have been paying Gob to do exactly what he has done, to get very talented people like GiGi in, Gob will only oversee the whole, he is obviously doing something right if GiGi is onboard.

As for Aprilia, I don't see them ever making a road bike truly competitive with the prototypes, as much as it completely ....... pains me to agree with anything Jumkie says, take away the tyres and extra fuel and it would be a long way of the pace, add in Aliex and its obvious there is only one fast ART.

Umm. Gob got moved sideways, Gigi took his job.

And if his job was to get Gigi in, it was by displaying enough incompetence to get himself shifted. Can you really say his tenure has been anything other than a waste of time?

If that is genuinely the case then no.

Not according to the news - Gobmeier has been moved up the chain at VW - a promotion is how it is described. He is replacing Ulrich Hackenberg as Director: Technical Development, who has moved to a similar position at Audi.

I'm sure Gobmeier sees it as a promotion, anywhere away from that bike is a step up. Lets hope Gigi has some magic left....

I think they need some help from Dorna.  Not sure why they don't exit from competition to sort their machine, but you gotta respect this coup they just pulled off to attract a well respected guy from a fellow Italian rival.  Goes to show you Ducati want to win, they just haven't been able to overcome some of the handicaps of a series that isn't tailored to their concept of prototype machines.  I wish them luck, but if I was in their position, I'd leave and sort out the bike, then return when the rules are a bit more conducive for their project.

Engineer they need a Miracle and loads of cash try the Queen n Pope Duc

Talking of Yoda, the crack pipe is strong in this one, so its all the fault of the series? the bike has not evolved as others have, and it plain don't handle as it should, .... me change the record.

You're right, part of the musical chairs at VAG earlier this year. Though I still believe he was merely VAG's gatekeeper/placeholder while at Ducati. Achieved nought. Quickly moved when a decent candidate came up.

"All the fault of the series"...you dont read so well. I repeat myself with the hopes it finally sinks in to your dense skull. I know its impenetrable to reason. But hope burns eternal.

oh man!!!  I think I hit the key beside the "S" when I said/meant to type "VSG", the real problem is the VSG's, I must have types "its the VAG's" and so they hooked up with VAG thinking that would fix it.

I agree. But with a proviso, he was never meant to change the world at Ducati. He was available, he was German, he is a motorsport long-termer and a very technical manager and he is a bike guy - so the fit was perfect for a night-watchman role while looking at what Audi got for their Deutschmarks. Which wouldn't be visible from a balance sheet...

I think if he had been able, they would have kept him on, but one of the first things he probably came up against was the German:Italian divide and they knew early on an Italian was what was needed.

Not quite. It's a matter of competence and credibility, nationalities do not count when hunting for engineering heads (as F1 clearly shows). Fact is that MotoGP-grade designers with experience are found mostly in Japan and Italy nowadays, and snatching Japanese men from their Shoguns is pretty much impossible; so they didn't have much choice. They have been after Dall'Igna since the end of 2012. It took a long negotiations and three successive proposals before finally nailing it. Gobmeier is an old friend of Dall'Igna btw...

Well Ducati screwed up then, clearly they should have been seeking the services of BM.  He knows exactly what is wrong with it.  And unlike Burgess, he really would have fixed it in seconds.

I bow to your superior knowledge. I was wondering whether it was an engineering ethical divide - the way the Ducati guys work being possibly inimicable to the German way of doing things. But, as you say, "nationalities do not count when hunting for engineering heads"

Thanks for the redress :)

Aprilia became a power in 250 using the services of 2-strokes wizard Jan Witteveen, who was a Dutchman. No problem working with Italian engineers because in the engineering world it is ideas, competence and results that matter; nationality is secondary.

You can't hire the Japanese guys period, as J4rno has said.
