It was a gamble that he claims was necessary if he was going to have a chance at winning. Valencia was a mistake, comparable to any of the crashes of Lorenzo. That's one Stoner crash versus four for Lorenzo. I'm a Lorenzo fan, but I think he's got too much of the Biaggi mentality in him. Very concerned with being a publicity machine and dead set on beating Rossi at all costs. I'll be surprised if he ever beats Rossi to a title.
On the face of it its easy to let Casey off for the Donnington decision because he wasn't going to win in a straight fight, but hindsight suggests that with the conditions as they were Casey probably could have had a podium for staying on his bike, especially as we know how good he is in tricky conditions. Lorenzo's crash at a glance looks far worse, but he could easily argue that when he tried to make the break that he felt he wouldn't have been able to beat Rossi toe to toe later in the race, so he could be let off too.
At the end of the day racing is all about weighing up risk taking against maximising your chance of winning, so i'm not sure it makes so much sense to give Casey the benefit of the doubt for losing an an ALL or NOTHING risk, while Lorenzo lost out at the hands of exceeding the envelope by a relatively small margin.
