BOMBSHELL, BUELL IS NO MORE

Just when Buell looked to be making some great strides forward, HD pulls the plug, wow. Erik Buell has got to be devastated. Although I wasn't a fan of the rules DMG had in place that gave Buell obvious advantages when racing the AMA this last year, I am certainly sad to see an American sport motorcycle company go by the wayside.

Thats sad news

I never had a problem with Buell as a company, i did have a problem with them conspiring with DMG to run a ringer in one of the most popular series in bike racing.I would never have bought one their products simply because they were overpriced ,low technology pieces of equippment ,but i didnt wish them to cease to exist.

What a shame. Eric Buell has been an innovative force in designing and engineering
some truly innovative motorcycle technology.
I wonder what he will do next.

Damn... hate to see anyone who worked that hard and that long
have the rug pulled out from under. I actually remember seeing
his first race bike with the old Rotax engine in the pits at Daytona
in '84 when I was on crew for a fellow racer and thinking how cool
it was that an iconoclastic American was going up against the big four.
Never been a fan of his bikes but there are certainly lots of folks out
there who have been.

Thanks for the link. Made my day!

I am surprised Buell lasted as long as they did. Their bikes were simply ok. The main problems were the bikes were unreliable, and they used Harley engines. DMG has alienated the manufacturers people actually want to watch race. Obviously DMG did not perform enough due diligence in examining Buell's financial stability.

Let's see. DMG promotes a single manufacturer and said manufacturer folds. RE is now officially a tosser.

Would love to hear the Cheers @ Am Honda today when that news broke. Talk about tucking the ole tale between the legs and kiss that big H ........

All that cheating in the AMA could not help sell a buell.

As much as I was never really a big fan of Buell, especially since they cheated their way to a championship, I don't like to see them get the shaft and go out of business. Erik Buell hell of a run and something tells me the story isn't over. Good luck!

I wonder now if Harley is going to try again to produce an american racer? It would be something if they actually listend to people this time who know how to make a race bike but if the past is any indication of what they will do it doesn't look very promising.

I hear you. But I disagree that they "conspired", I blame DMG 100%.

Sad indeed. American manufacturing in all forms is dying. So will go the country.

+1.I`d love to see Harley back with the vigour they showed in flat track racing, but I guess its a dream.

I thought I lost all respect for Eric Buell once he "cubed" the entry level Blast. I actually do feel sorry for him and all his work force. I wouldn't consider his bikes innovative, just different.

Maybe this is the kick he needs to get away from HD. WHo knows, maybe Eric can take all or get permission for the "Buell" patents and go the way of the electric motor.

They're too ....... busy merchandising the logo so beloved of
bloated Hells Angels posers and the like. Harley is the
Hard Rock Cafe of the motorcycle world. They've made a career
of being short-sighted and unimaginative. But they sure do sell
a lot of t-shirts.

Harley will end up regretting this decision.

Harley aren't shortsighted though, their sales have been booming since the early 90s. Harley are allegedly trying to build a new factory, but with the depth of the recession, I'm sure their happy to can the Buell project and use those facilities to produce more bikes rather than building an entirely new facility.

At least Ray Blank will get a decent nights sleep.

thier sales have gone down the ...........from their press release:

Harley's sales are down quite a bit this year - 21% lower in the third quarter this year than last and an 84% decline in income from a year ago.

"Worldwide retail sales of new Harley-Davidson® motorcycles declined 21.3 percent in the third quarter compared to last year’s third quarter, an improvement from the 30.1 percent decline in this year’s second quarter. An 84.1 percent decline in net income and an 84.5 percent decline in diluted earnings per share from the year-ago quarter reflected lower motorcycle shipments and the effects of the economy on retail and wholesale loan performance at Harley-Davidson Financial Services."

Due to this, they are discontinuing Buell and selling MV Agusta:

"Harley-Davidson also unveiled major elements of its go-forward business strategy to drive growth through a single-minded focus of efforts and resources on the unique strengths of the Harley-Davidson brand, and to enhance productivity and profitability through continuous improvement. As approved yesterday by Harley-Davidson’s Board of Directors, the Company will discontinue its Buell product line and divest its MV Agusta unit as part of this strategy."

Harley have weathered the storm before if I recall correctly, didn`t they re-emerge from the AMF debacle to greater heights?USA wouldn`t be USA without a Harley would it?
