Yamahas woes

If you're not part of the Valeban can you concede that Rossi has a losing record against every great rider he has competed against?

So all the riders Rossi beat are not great because Rossi beat them and the ones he didn’t beat are great because he didn’t beat them?

That’s some pretty nifty logic you’ve got there.

Beaten Marquez many times, beaten Lorenzo many times, beaten Stoner many times...
More gp wins than any current riders, more moto gp titles than a.n.other, 5 championships on the bounce etc.
Not much of a losing record really!

During their time competing.

Vs Lorenzo - less championships and less wins
Vs Marquez - less championships and less wins
Vs Stoner - same amount of championships, less wins

That is in fact the definition of a losing record. Then we can talk about his record on a control tyre against Stoner and Lorenzo as well which makes it worse.

Sorry, great rider that Rossi has a winning record against?

Pedrosa I guess is almost great, Biaggi isn't great, Gibernau isn't great + a few of Doohans left overs who weren't great.

You defend Stoner for calling it quits early, but want to criticize Rossi for competing longer than you think he should?

As usual, a poorly thought out post using false equivalencies from Powerslide's current Rossi apologist in chief. Stoner leaving the sport was merely disappointing to his fans, whereas Rossi sticking around hurts the sport by virtue of the way his seat at Yamaha is wasted on a rider who is no longer sufficiently competitive to deserve one of the best bikes on which a younger rider could be vying for the championship.

We'd be looking at some epic battles between Vinales and Zarco on the very competent M1 that they started the year on, instead of seeing Rossi way way back in the field dicking around on the "improved" chassis and Vinales struggling to get into the top 5 on it.

Oh, so greatness is defined by who you think are great?

Do you think any of those guys I mentioned are true greats of the sport? I don't think anyone has ever called them greats.

The great things about statistics is that they can be anything you want them to be.

Let's take the first 6 years in each rider's premier class career:

Rossi: 5 world championships, 1 runner up
Lorenzo: 2 world championships, 2 runner ups
Casey Stoner: 2 world championships, 1 runner up
Marc Marquez: Only 5 years yet in the world championships. 4 world championships, 1 third place.

Even if Marquez wins the 2018 world title, Rossi has a better record. Lorenzo and Stoner don't even compare.

Forum logic says that Rossi sucks and all of the others are the best ever, though!

I don't know about Biaggi not being great, I think he was, especially on a 2-stroke.

You're right, you can prove anything with statistics. All I will say though is since 2007 there has been a far greater depth of talent in the field than in the early 2000's. Also, in 2002 it really was a one horse race with the RC211V being by far the best 4 stroke bike out there, ina field mostly full of outdated 2 strokes. Rossi only had to beat his team mate that yr.

Yet, he went on to make a ho hum bike into a world beater, beating his previously unbeatable bike and the 87 riders Honda put up against him.

On a 250 definitely but on the 500 to really be great he should've at picked up a title in the two years between Doohan and Rossi's dominance. He could be considered great but at the level of Rossi, Doohan, Schwantz, Rainey, Stoner, Lorenzo, Marquez, Lawson etc? No way.

You're right, he did.

He didn't, however, manage to replicate that at Ducati, despite the 80 seconds claim by his crew chief. That does tarnish his development status at least a little.

Biaggi was great. I really loved watching him. He was not as talented as some of the all time greats, but he was all heart. As a Rossi fan of course I wanted to see him beat, but that rivalry was amazingly entertaining.

At the risk of causing a cardiac arrest to some folks here, him almost putting Rossi in the grass and Rossi responding later by overtaking Biaggi while showing him the finger was one of the most exciting moments of that rivalry.

I'd say the opposite, if he's not suiting up and getting on the bike with the intentions of competing for the championship then he should retire. The only reason to race is to attempt to win, intentionally being a wingman like Pedrosa is lame and hard to respect.

Of course you'd say that. Like most boppers you have a singularly narcissistic point of view that precludes giving value to anything other than Rossi. If you had your way there wouldn't be any riders to compete with him. Carmelo would simply give him all the trophies and cash while he sat on a throne with you as his sole audience. You probably have fantasies of you and Uccio getting greased up and having cat fights in a jello pit over who gets to warm his bed at night.

As far as I understand, Rossi and Burgess were given a clean slate at Yamaha. They could name what they wanted and Yamaha would build it.

They thought they would get that at Ducati, they didn't. Only after Rossi and Crutchlow left did Ducati realize they need to change their approach. It then took some creative concessions claiming a Gigi D'aligna and some catfish whiskers (And later, some hollow milk cartons) to right that ship.

And among the ones who didn’t ask for it to be revised was a guy who didn’t seem like the season was going his way, managed to turn it around once the tire was revised and went on to win the championship.

Rossi might no longer be the fastest guy out there, but he does have more experience than any other rider in the paddock. Maybe, just maybe when he says something isn’t working, it is actually because he knows his stuff.

Hey send me a line when they start giving trophies for experience. I could win a bunch of those.

Rossi was obviously great in his era.

Unfortunately for him, you and even more so the rest of us that era isn't now.
