WSBK Silverstone

Well I've an unexpected day off so I thought I'd share my silverstone WSB experience with you all.

It started about 9am on the friday, me and my buddy Mat set off to silvo to arrive about 11am. We decided to pitch the tents and gazeebo first then we could enjoy the rest of the day. By 12 were pitched and sat in the van having a well deserved beer watching some dude wandering abut looking all lost and confused looking for a spot for his tent, so I called over "are you on your own mate?" He said yes so I told him to pitch his tent behind ours and join the party later. A thumbs up and he started pitching his tent. Once done we went over to him and offered him a beer (as you do). He accepted and introduced himself. (now for the the thread he didn't want his name in print so we shall call him UBTA which will explain itself later).

So me n mat went off for second practice and a wander around silvo to see what was there.

After all the sport had finished we head off back to the tent to wait for our other arrivals to the campsite and get the barby fired up. About 7ish Lyndon arrives,(I met Lyndon in jerez and we ended up going to estoril and assen together, he's a top bloke) soon after UBTA's back and were all drinking chatting and eating having a good time. About 9ish Nikki and Zak arrive. (me and lyndon met these guys in assen) so greetings all round (woods) food and more beer lol. I think it was somewhere beetween 1 & 2am we crashed.

Next morn we were all up, some had brekkie others coffee, but we were all suprised not to find a towel from our bavarian friend on one of the chairs lol. And we all set off for the saturdays track action. We got in the int pit staight at the club end, the view is great from out of stowe down into the vales, all round club and down the straight and good pic oppertunities too
<
. After the w supersport Ubta says he's to go meet someone and leaves. The rest of us stay for WSB practice. After practice me and mat head off to the paddock because we have passes and want to get some photo's signed if poss. The others decide to have a wander around the stalls etc.

We arrived at the paddock and have a little wander up and down a couple of times, get a few pics signed and decide that theres an hour till superpole so a bite to eat (and a beer) would be in order. Just leaving the paddock to go to the delicious burger van (yes I was been sarcastic with the delicious bit) and we are joined by Ubta. We eat and mat n me decide some calli meds on the grass with the beer would be nice so off we go and ubta comes over too.

So there we are sat on the grass toking the grass watching two hares on the airfield bounding about.

Its at this point I asked Ubta what he did for a living. the conversation is below.

So what do you do Ubta?

Leans close and says its a secret and laughs

I give him a confused look (it wasn't hard Ive had lots of practice)lol

He leans in again and says " I'm an official tester for bmw motorrad"

.... off! your shitting me! I said

No no he says and promptly produces his access id pass and other id to proove it.

Me and Mat were absolutely gobsmacked! Literally picking our jaws up off the floor to put them back on our faces.

He then goes on to tell us about other things he did besides test and he does quite a lot on the development of the brakes and suspension.

At about this time I got a call from Willski and we are not far from each other but heading in different directions, so we decide to meet up later on the campsite for a beer. Ubta goes back to the bmw box and me and mat get just on pit entrance for pics of superpole. After superpole we head back to the inter pit straight for the last groups of quallie and on to the campsite.

As the group got together that eve we told them what we had discovered about our baverian friend It was great watching their jaws fall open. But also a little worrying Did we look like that when we found out! Eeek we probably did, not a good look lol. So anyhows we fired up the barby again and ate our fills. Enter Willski & Austin they both looked pretty tired and said so. We had a shot of woods and offered them a beer whilst we had a chat and took some pics. It was good to see them but all too soon they said they were knackerd and had to go. As I said they did look tired. So our motley crew went down the campsite pub to check out the bands that were there. We sat and talked and laughed and drank and laughed some more right up to the point where security had to ask us to leave because we were the last ones there. If I'm honest we were having such a good time I hadn't even noticed the music had stopped lol

We all crashed for the night.

Raceday!

We were all up ok but no one could face brekkie so on with the coffee and lots of it lol.

We headed up to the track deciding the inter pit staight would be the place to be, we get to the gate and Zak cannot find his ticket, nightmare! so we split Nik & Zak go back to camp and me lyndon and mat go on to save seats. Ubta has to go meet some one again so heads off to the paddock. They find the ticket and let us know there on the way back. Great relief all round! I get a txt and its Kev (Skaface on here) another dude that was at assen, so I txt back where we are. Zak announces that another Mat and Michelle whom we also met in assen were at the gate and Lyndon went to meet them as he had their tickets. Lyndon retuns with the guys and shortly after Kev lands. Great the assen reunion was together at last!
<

Well we had a fantastic day, the racing was great, the weather was sublime and the company!? there's no words to describe how good that was.

We watched from the pit straight untill after the first WSB race and took a wander to the pims tent for a few jugs in the sunshine it came at the expense of the w supersport and junior cup races but hey in company like this sacrifices have to be made, besides we were all recording it at home so could watch them later.

The second WSB race we watched from the grass in front of club again in the sunshine and there was some great overtakes going into club from the vales. Checa's double endo stops going into the pits was also something to behold. All in all a great day and IMO just what racing is all about.

After the racing we all except Kev (he had to get off home) our multi nationality group head off down the campsite for an hour to chill in the shade and reflect on the day. Ubta returns and meets the rest of our gang and we start to pack away. we found some beer we had left and gave them to Ubta as he was staying the night.

Before we said our goodbyes Ubta came to me and thanked me for my hospitality and said he wants the gang to go over to germany next year so he could show me the same. We all agreed it was a great idea and said YES! So sachenring had better watch out next year cos the gp whores are coming to party lol.

Just a final note about the group and where we are from

Me n Mat are from yorkshire

Lyndon the black country

Nikki the south coast

Zak and the other Matt are from the USA but currently reside in germany

Michell the other Matts better half is from Australia and also lives in germany

Unnamed Baverian Test Astonaut is from well baveria lol

Kev from london. Skaface on here.

Hope you enjoyed our little jollie to silverstone and if you wanna partake in future festivities theres always next year lol.

Nice write up, red.

So interesting news on Hopper. He was apparently using a very basic Motec ECU kit. Lack of factory kit may explain Hoppers backward charge at the end of Race 1 and Race 2.

Thanks Lex.

If its true about the ECU it would indeed explain why hopper finished where he did.

But its got to stand him in good stead for the BSB round at silverstone in september.

It's possible that had something to do with it. He told me he chewed his tires trying to keep up in the corners. He had some choice words about being down on power in a straight line.

Me and Austin were wondering whether Jumkie had hit Silverstone for WSBK

I bumped into him the next day in the BMW hospitality. He was a nice guy. Think he said he was off to Donny on the Monday, just to have a look at the track, then down to the Motor Cycle museum in Birmingham, then off to Triumph for a look around whilst he was over on holiday. I said to him " When are you back at work ? " he looked at me, smiled and said " You don't really call what I do work "

Lol it is for some Wills.

There should be some good racing in Dundrod this weekend, I've got to go to a road race next year, something Ive yet to experience first hand. I think a weekend at scarbrough on olivers mount looks favorite unless the tt doesn't clash with the gp like this year.
<

What a great thread guys. I had stayed away because I hadn't watched the races. I finally saw them last night, thanx racingforme.

First of all, I'd like to say, HOPPER, .... yea! And may I add, I rate Haslam on par with Hopper. Both suffered from .... packages...something Checa has in spades.

Great pics and videos gentz. I enjoyed them all. Austin, how dare you cover up the mic! Pendejo.

I was really happy to see Hopkins battle. He didn't give up any position easily...Melandri. hahaha. Had that been GP, I could just hear the postrace interview now about how dangerous that was, hehehe. I love Wsbks, and its a shame so many peeps who are supposed 'motorcycle racing fans' aren't tuned in. Btw, great weather, .... you very much.
<

That RV! .... yeah.

I was really happy to see Hopkins battle. He didn't give up any position easily...Melandri. hahaha.

Melandri complained about Hopkins in both post-race press conferences. Not that he was riding too aggressively, just that his stubborn attempts to keep position cost Melandri a chance at fighting with Checa (I'm paraphrasing).

It was great to meet up with several of those I had originally met in Assen on such a very nice warm day, made a change from those two wet and grey GPs! Shame I had to dash off so quickly after the racing, had been kicking myself all day for the little mishap before arriving.

Hopper has amazed me all year, riding different bikes and having to learn several new tracks, with some great BSB results. Gutted for his accident at Brno and that means he will miss Cadwell Park, at least he is in the top six shoot-out and reports say he will be back at Silverstone.

Glad I did record the races because the Supersport race was another classic, I do love the 600 class as it reminds me what 250GP races were like.

So Melandri had a few words about Hopkins, what is a rider with a chance of bettering their future prospects supposed to do in a race, let them pass? I think Marco might have got a bit hot under the collar as he made a few hard passes at Vale in particular.

Roll on October!!

Damn!!! missed you off the write up at end Kev.

Been and edited my mistake mate.

Roll on October!!!

Hopkins rode the wheels off that thing to be where he was - his bike was considerably lower spec that the boys he was racing with (I know BSB allows full WSBK spec but the Crescent bikes aren't there). Too bad he had to destroy his tires to run with them.
