WSBK Assen (may contains spoilers)

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Marijke @ Apr 27 2008, 07:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>supersport 600 was FANTASTIC! THE race of the day, a head-group of 8-10 riders, all fighting to get on the podium and to win. awsome awsome awsome

I'm even more a fan of joshua brookes now too, he's a great rider. and that Rea dude, what was he on! fantastic how he kept on pushing and fighting for the win. Pitt said he was still in shock, 2 hours after the races finished
<
did I said it was an awsome race already?! might be the best race I've ever saw in real life

THAT RACE!!!!!!!

It was amazing! The best race from any class I have seen in a LONG time.

I am so jealous you were there to experience it.

Nice piccies M! Brings back memories. How many people go to the SBK race? Some stands looked empty, 'cept the huge one on the straight (is that the Geert one?).

Dont normally watch supersport races, but hells bells that was one superb race! Jealous that you got to watch it live!

was about 30.000 people today ben, not that many. but I would almost say I prefer WSBK over the TT weekend: much more relaxed, better audience and always a good race. some stands were empty yeah, where we sat today there weren't that many people either. we had like, per person 3 seats, which is great: one to sit on, one to put your bags on with drinks etc, and one for you motorstuff outfit. and if you want to take a nap, you'll just take another 3 or 4 seats
<
that was the Geert Timmer+main grand stand that you saw fully packed with people yeah
<
so glad I didn't sat there

really, I can recommend going to a wsbk race for anyone!

Nice pictures Marijke, thanks for sharing them ... just one thing .... WHERE were the grid girls???? hahaha you can't send a girl to take pictures ...

It should actually be a crime if bike fans DON'T see that race.

Go to the WSB site everyone!

Unfortunately in Australia they don't allow us to watch the bikes on the WSBK site - the fuckers. I've been directed to a torrent site which has virtually every motorsport there is on it. Now I can find whatever I want.

Mari, thanks for the great pics and captions. Would like to go to Assen some day.

I just saw the races, we get Race 1 on Sunday, then Race 2 Tuesday (yesterday for me) and Superport race this coming Friday night at mid-night (yeah, no .... our Speed TV coverage sucks ...). So I can't comment on the Supersport race, but I can tell you that I'm watching WSBK with much more enthusuans than MotoGP latley. It really is just better racing period!

Reading you comment, it sounded like you were not too impressed with Superbikes, how much closer do you want them to get, perhaps riding piggy-back might make the racing more exciting for you? Geex, I can't see how closer they could get. ...., they were so close Haga & Xaus got locked up together. I for one was on the edge of my lazyboy seat both races. Yeah, it suck that Haga & Xaus went down, but damn, both those foos are animals and won't give eachother an inch.

Congrats to Bayliss, his one ball has more fearlessness than most with two.

I'll be going to the US WSBK round in Salt Lake City, Utah, I hope its as good a time as you had.

well, I'm always impressed with the riders, thats for sure. the spot where we sat was truly the best place of the assen track, we always go there at least 1 day during the TT too. the speed and the way they ride on that spot is just amazing! they come out of the stekkenwalcorner with 160km p/h, they accelerate and while they do so you can see them working so hard to keep the front down, only to brake a split second later again for another corner. amazing!

1st race, I really enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, it's the 2nd race I wasn't too excited. it may have looked close on tv. but how it was in real life, especially just after seeing and experiencing the supersport 600, it looked like bayliss dominated the 1st spot and haga couldn't possibly make a move on him. only last couple of rounds and the last corner was exciting between haga and bayliss imo. it was more fun to see checa building up his race and fight to get 3rd. another reason is that last years races at assen during the WSBK were fantastic, better than this year. maybe I'm just spoiled with all the good racing
<

I agree with you that the wsbk/supersport has been a lot better than motogp lately. like I said, I would almost say that going to a WSBK race is better than a motogp race... and I know alot of people agree with me, spoke with lots of people last weekend who told me they only go to the wsbk's, not the motogp, because 1) it has better races and 2) the atmosphere is much better. but I still enjoy the motogp too
<

you truly need to see the supersport 600 next friday if you have time, you won't regret it!

Sounds great.

I was actually more impressed with race 2. It was closer than one and no crashes out of Xaus and Haga. I was rooting for Neucher but was disappointed to see him fade in the last laps. What's going on with Biaggi? I thought Haga would beat him to the line. What was the margin of victory?

I'm not much of a Checa fan, he killed his stock when he torpedoed Neucher. He first said he knew he might crash but tried it anyway, then backpedaled because he was under pressure to make amends.

As far as the racing, yes, it’s much better. Bayliss is truly amazing. Oh, what's up with the BSB champ? Is that the quality that Tom so desperately would like me to believe come out of that series?

Exactly. This is a decent example of the difference between a national and a world champiosnhip. The Honda is comparitavely underdeveloped though so the results have been a bit mediocre, but if you haven't noticed both he and it have been getting steadily stronger (setting fastest laps before technical problems in race 2). Kiyo has also been consistently beating the world supersport champion but unsurprisingly is not up to the level an experienced motogp rider.

Yeah... just like when Nicky only got a fourth and a 14th in the WSB wildcard at Laguna. Or Mladin getting a sixth and a DNS. It shows the quality of that series just right

Race 1: I was sad to see Haga and Xaus go down, but it's expected with those two. They're some of the most aggressive passers out there. I was impressed with Checa's ability again to move thru the pack. Great to see Max N on the podium as well. Bayliss, showing how he can dominate a race, the guy is a machine. Once again showing age has nothing to do about it.

Race 2: was great watching Haga shadow Bayliss the whole race, I was just hoping he would put a pass on him somewhere but I suppose his strategy was to wait for the last lap. Unfortunately he just wasn't close enough in the final corner. Again impressed with Checa's skill with moving thru the pack. Still think he is a putz for taking out Max N in Valencia but I gotta admire his riding skill. Im sure Ten Kate is happy to have him aboard.

Whats wrong with Biaggi, he looked amazingly fast at Phillip Island, minus his crashes there, but hasn't performed well since. It can't be his ride as Xaus seems to be doing well on it. I suspect he is still not 100% after the P.I. crash?

WSS : I finally sat down and watched the Supersport race at Assen, wow. That was one of the most exciting races I have seen in a long time. The competition in that class is amazing. So many guys capable of winning. There was no way to call that race, it was so close up to the very last split second. Sucks that they are not bringing Supersport to Miller at the end of the month.

Well a 4th ain’t bad, one off the podium. Anyway, you can't really be serious, these wildcard rides are when a guy jumps on an unfamiliar machine and races that weekend only, keeping in mind they are still in a championship hunt in their national series (even that same day), so risk is not much taken. Not the case with the BSB champ currently in WSBK. He's had plenty of seat time and testing to boot. I would even say the BSB bike is more similar to the WSBK than the AMA is to the World series. Oh, lets not forget, we have a BSB & WSBK Champ (no less) in the AMA, no podiums yet.

But since you want to throw up some comparisons, ok let’s see: Lets pretend Kiyo's first few races were "wildcards" just like Nicky & Mladin (lets just forget for the sake of comparison that they have not had any testing on the bike, as Kiyo did for a moment).

Nicky 4th & 14th Kiyo first races this season: 22nd & 9th
Mladin 6th & DNF Kiyo first races this season: 22nd & 9th

Both the AMA guys did better except for the DNF, so has Kiyo had any DNFs? Oh yeah, twice, at Valencia and Assen.

So lets look at Kiyo BSB Champion results so far:

Qatar race 1. 22nd race 2. 19th
PI race 1. 9th race 2. 6th
Valencia race 1. DNF race 2. 4th
Assen race 1. 7th race 2. DNF

Only once in the top 5 ( a 4th that coupled with a DNF). The rest has been fairly ..... Unless you want to point to that 6th (equalled by Mladin).

So it doesn't look like he's all that great. Oh, this from a two time BSB champion and runner up in 05 (to Lavilla who also sucks in WSBK). So he has been crushing for three years but sucks now or the series sucks and he was the best.

You still want to make the case that the BSB is superior to AMA? Hahaha. AMA makes champs, they go on to ride in MotoGP. The BSB makes champs, they go on to suck in WSBK.

Yeah, those Hondas suck. Mr. Torpedo can't make his way up the field and onto the podium with such a terrible machine. The bike is so bad, he as to bulldoze his way to a win I guess.

Poor Kiyo, hasn't had any time on that "underdeveloped" bike. Maybe Mr. Kamikaze should have skipped WSBK and gone to BSB, he would have had an easy championship just waiting for him to snatch.

Why pretend? If you look at the BSB record for wildcards it is substancially superior to the AMA one.

Really? Ten kate got the bikes in late January just one month before the season began.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Tom @ May 1 2008, 01:59 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Really? Ten kate got the bikes in late January just one month before the season began.
So one month's seat time, at least serveral goes, and your gonna say a one-off wild car is about the same? Haha. You see why debating you is a dumb thing I do?

What about the rest of my post? Any enlightening comments? The wildcards was Phlegs way of saying the AMA guys suck, but as you can see compared to your BSB champ, quiet the opposit is true.

Now are you gonna explain how Kiyo got the bike last to explain his .... performances, perhaps Checa got the bike three months before him, eh? Checa is currenly 2nd in points, Kiyo is not even in the top ten. As a representative of the all great and superior BSB over the AMA, I can't say I'm impressed. But please, continue to try and explain why down is up and black is white.
