Worst title defence in GP history

So we all know that the worst title defence in premier class GP history was 2001 when Kenny Roberts JR scored only 1 podium all year (and that was a third place), so do you think Nicky Hayden will defend his title a bit better or will he be unable to adapt to the new 250 like riding style demanded by the new 800s?
For the record I think the Texas Light Breeze will finish higher than Paper Daddy or whtever Nicky wants to be known as in the standings at the end of the year.

Oh I don't know - Laguna could be his again, but then everyone else is getting to know it now. I guess I believe Trick Dogey aka Haystack will perform in his usual safe way and the fight for the title will be Rossi, Capi and the Pedrobot. If Y2 does well is a question - he threw away Assen last year - but I wish him luck

Is that in the same sense that he was obviously going to be the '06 world champ?
Can you pick my lottery numbers please?
Nothing is a foregone conclusion Tom.

Yeah i guess obviously is the wrong word. But i do truly believe his title championship will, at very worst be crivilles level.

Nicky will do a better job at defending his title than Roberts did but i doubt he will win many more than 1 or 2 races although that was enough last year.

I doubt very much that'd be enough this year, Rossi has got his act together big time, and already looks like he is gonna be better than ever this year.

yeah but Robert's suzuki was a POS...Nicks was/is on the best bike/team.

Nah he's gonna do worse.

Colin is surely going to have a better year than last year but I think the main contenders are Rossi & Pedrosa!

Yeah, suzuki lost a LOT of ground over that winter, so it was a bit of a shame because Roberts was still riding quite well.....and still is.

that's a very good point ! I don't expect Nicky to just dissapear but I really can't see him being a contender come the end of the season.

I agree Tom - I rekon it's as good as his but - to be honest, I don't think Rossi ever didn't have his act together (if that makes sense) - I rekon he only really needs to hold his hands up for Valencia - the rest was just bad luck

I disagree, if you compared his pre-season and early season from last year to this, the difference is huge. Rossi got quite lazy and complacent at the top, and his performance showed, untill he had a comeback to make and he caught fire again, then went to faar and through it away.

Hey Tom, grow some “intestinal fortitude” (that’s code for “balls”) Dude, you say “’obviously’ Hayden will get more than one podium”, then rgvneil jumps on you for using the word “obviously” and you back down like a wet paper tiger. Let me ask you this, would it be that far fetched to say “obviously” Rossi will bag at least “one” podium? So why is it so far fetched that Hayden will bag at least “one” podium? Please. This thread starts with the assumption that Hayden may be among the “worst” title defenders (thinly veiled suggestion, and I don’t want to hear the same old ........ like, “I didn’t say that...” It’s rather “obvious” what he is suggesting based on what rgvneil’s thinks are his “original and clever” nicknames); and on top of that, rgneil goes on to explicitly say “will” as if he has the crystal ball. Hell, he should tell you & me the lottery numbers since he knows what “will” or “will not” happen. I realize I’m on the western hemisphere of the planet, but last time I checked, the season hasn’t started yet. This is just another thread that can be filed under: “Threads that lame people start to try to come up with clever ways to dis Hayden.”

Thats what most threads seem to be.

And as for me "backing down" all i was doing was conceeding the fact that this is motorsport and that things are not certain, that is a legitimate point. If he choses to then ignore his own comments then i can't be bothered to deal with it.

I don't think that its likely for Nicky to have a particularly bad title defence. Its still way to early to rule him out of winning it, although i don't think that is so likely.

So far, things are not looking good for Hayden. But then the championship rewards consistency. In 2006, Hayden won only 2 races and finished on the podium in 8 (less than half the races). Rossi on the other hand won 5 races and finished on the podium 10 times but DNF 3 times. So, thanks to Honda reliability Hayden still won the championship.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (crvlvr @ Mar 8 2007, 10:53 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>finished on the podium in less than half the races.

10 is more than half of 17.

but i too think that things will be a lot better than they look now.

Good point. I was just trying to say we all speculate. And we use words like "will" and "obviously" and "I think" and so on. I just thought it hypocritical for this guy to make a point of you saying what you thought was a bit much; yet, he used the word "will" to say what is gonna happen. He comes on and says you are somehow mistaken since you were stating what I thought was much more "likely" (higher degree of probability), where you used the word "obviously", which is within the scope of speculation. Which in fact he was doing but used a much stronger word like this “will” happen as he “colorfully” put it, he thinks Hayden will come behind Edwards (I’m assuming that’s who he was referring to, though its irrelevant). So he knows what "will" happen.

Sorry Jumkie, while I do give Nicky his due respect there is a big difference between Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi. For everyones edification Yamaha had a horrible chatter problem at the beginning of the season and did not clear it up untilafter the halfway point. Consequently Rossi was forced to ride on and even over the edge which is why his season was so out of character. Yamaha got it wrong, plain and simple, there was no laziness or complacency from Rossi. To put thing in perspective Rossi had a crap-handling bike, was submarined by another rider and the bike suffered from reliability issues. And he still came within a whisker of winning the championship. Nicky, on the otherhand was on the best bike with the best team in all of two wheeled racing, had no reliability issues, he did suffer a submarine attack from his own teamate, and he only won because the other guy crashed.

Let us ask ourselves this question. Who would you bet on if Rossi and Hayden were on equal machinery? Honest answers only please.

Yeah thats totally fair, i just didn't notice, even after he called me on it. i guess i assume that we all know the obvious uncertainties of the sport, and when we sound that sure of somethinf we are representing a strong opinion.

Yes of course. Just as much that there is a difference between all the riders on the grid. But the assumption/suggestion here is that Hayden may be one of the worst title defenders. Yet the season hasn’t even started. Please, enough with the winning history of Rossi. It’s not the point of debate here. The point is what is to be (future). And as far as I’m concerned, the assumption that he will be a terrible defender is already putting the cart before the horse.

“ For everyones edification Yamaha had a horrible chatter problem at the beginning of the season and did not clear it up untilafter the halfway point. Interesting. For a moment there I thought you were talking about Hayden. The argument that Hayden was the #2 rider with crappy performing parts that were not addressed in a timely manner doesn’t seem to have credence. Yet you tell me about all the problems that Rossi’s machinery had? How about, they both had problems that they had to overcome. Hayden came out on top.

“Nicky, on the otherhand was on the best bike with the best team in all of two wheeled racing, had no reliability issues, he did suffer a submarine attack from his own teamate, and he only won because the other guy crashed.”

Yamaha is not all that shabby as you try and make it out. Don’t forget, its vertually the same team he won preciously with.

“Let us ask ourselves this question. Who would you bet on if Rossi and Hayden were on equal machinery? Honest answers only please.”

My money is on Hayden. My money was on Hayden before Portugal; and more importantly, my money was on Hayden after Portugal. Why can’t you guys understand that? Who would have thought that Rossi would have dumped his bike with nobody else to blame? Who? It was exceedingly unlikely. But history shows that it happened. So to come on and start a thread about the worst possible defense of a title is “obviously” more a weak attempt at a statement rather than a genuine inquiry.
