assen and groningen are one of the best cities, considering groningen is a real studentcity with lots of good pubs you are the first american I spoke that came to holland without visiting amsterdam. I tend to have the idea that americans think amsterdam is a place where all the people are stoned or drunk and that it's all about the red light district... I think it's great you missed amsterdam and see a bit more of holland
