I was being facetious, to try to make my point. Josh Herrin used 46 in the AMA, I believe, even used a similar style to Rossi's number.
Tommy bridewell used it bsb. Ironically, his brother passed away from a crash at mallory park

What about those young kids that showed up to his funeral in leathers and helmets. Im sure he was an idol to them. Maybe they would like to take his number in tribute to him. Fast foward ten years and one of those kids is in the GP class and is still running the 58. That would be a pretty compelling tribute

Well i dont hear the new commers screaming out to use #74. Im sure those young racer's we saw today would respect a number retirment decision and pick their own number.
Looking at Nascar, that series has never retired a number, not even Earnhardts. They have had quite a few fatalities besides him.
I agree with Krop although if this happened to Rossi I would feel otherwise because of his legendary status.. Simoncellis short career hardly had an impact on the sport.
Dovizioso had to drop 34 when he moved into MotoGP, which is why he went with 4.
Personally i think it should like #74 was retired for Kato.
As a tribute, how about this-
All the Moto GP riders do a parade lap behind the stig riding on Marco's race bike.
What is stig?
And im sure max biaggi would have been made to drop #3 if someone who finished 3rd in the championship wanted it and max finshed lower?
If this becomes a problem in the future then maybe there should be a rule were they have to use championship standing numbers. flip side to that is it will cost fans more each year with wanting the latest T-shirt with the relivent number.
What is stig?
Some say that his voice sounds like a two-stroke exhaust and he has special shoes flown in on Saturday nights. All we know is he's called the Stig.
I'm not sure how i feel about retired numbers. I don't think people need to be told not to use the number of a recent legend, especially not ones who have left the sport in unfortunate circumstances in recent times. I also think it'd be nice in the more distant future to see a rider come through carrying the number of their idol, or even in the more long term future making the number their own. I know this example doesn't really concern the greatest of the greats but Dovi currently has an attachment with the number 4, yet I haven't heard a single person exclaim that he is using Barros' number.
I get the retirement of the number as a gesture to all of Simoncelli's people in and out of racing, but I'm not sure in the bigger picture if it is the right thing to do
