He is top of FP1, He has been lingering about the top of FP's for a while.

Do you think he could actualy win a race?

it's the 1st day of practice.... he won't finish in this spot tommorro. would be great if he did buuuuut...

He's always had speed. He qualified the Kawasaki on the front row multiple times and was in the first couple of rows to start half of the races in 2007. He's just crashed a lot and been on iffy machinery.

Like every sat rider these days, if he wins, it's down to weather or freak circumstance.

It is, but something to keep in mind is that the last time a non-Honda sat rider won a race was I believe in 2000 when Garry McCoy and Norick Abe took wins for WCM and D'antin. Yes, the 990s had sat riders at the front and winning, but they were all on the same bike. Too bad they couldn't leave things alone and let the 990s mature a bit more.

He drafted CV throughout the whole lap. That is the only reason he is number 1 at this point.

FP's in general get people all pumped up look at Nickys FP 6th place in Barcelona. RDP would be lucky to podium, hell even if he finishes 5th it will be an accomplishment. Its going to be hard to see someone other than Rossi Stoner Lorenzo or Pedrosa on the podium this year. even with Flag to Flag races because after 2 the guys are starting to get the hang of it. Im hoping im wrong because i always like seeing a fresh face on the podium. Im not hating on RDP just being realistic

Then why isn't Vermulen in at least 2nd?

You mean he got spanked by Shinya Nakano when they were both on the Kawasaki. Shinya showed the way while they were there.

Dude leave it alone with the SHinya ..... He can't even win in SBK. You said he would kick Spies's ... and when was that going to happen. At present Ben has beat the pole record for a rookie set by another AMerican Doug Polen. So what did Shitya Do? Not a damn thing. And they are both at present on brand new bikes. The only difference is that Shinya has seen most of these tracks and Ben hasn't. So ...... Nocando really does fit him bro.

A rookie being outperformed by his veteran teammate? Unprecedented!

From Suzuki's site:

Today's fastest time was set by Randy de Puniet on a satellite Honda as he followed Vermeulen for a lap and used the Suzuki's slipstream to good effect.

That is just the way timing goes. All he had to do is gain 1/2 second on CV for the whole lap which is not that much and still stay in his slipstream when it counted on the straights which he did perfectly.

First of all your source is from Suzuki's website, and they will try to take every little credit they can seeing as right now they aren't exactly doing too well. And secondly, this is Chris Vermuelen we are talking about... even if he did follow Chris Vermuelen for a whole lap I doubt CV is able to keep good enough pace to even help himself in the top 10.... although i haven't seen the times yet.
<
And thirdly, you are a Suzuki fan.... so we all know you're delusional and take whatever you say with a grain of salt.
<

I watched it happen 'cause I saw the entire session. Anyway, he made the quickest lap time I am not denying that just giving my accurate as usual observation.

Look, for the minuscule effort of the Suzuki compared to the HRC and Yamaha factories they have 2 fifth place finishes in a row....ahead of a lot of higher rated machines. And 1 second slower over 5 kms is an extremely tight margin. You have to put the statement "aren't exactly doing well" in relative terms. You could look at it the other way like HRC and Yamaha are only around a second a lap quicker than Suzuki yet they spend 10 times more and see how you think of that viewpoint.

Randy always uses qualifier rubber on fridays!

I say by tomorrow he is relegated to 7-8th spot...

No such thing as qualifiers any more

Apparently he set his time on the harder rubber option as well.

right i forgot no more qualifiers, but he ususally always starts with the softs...unlike the top riders...

here in italy they said he was on softs...oh well.

in any case i was wrong, he qualified 10th...

should be a barnburner tomorrow...let's hope the the weather holds for a nice race!
