I'd like to see Ant West in the BSB. It would give me another good reason to follow the series. The question is, what kind of offers is he getting being that most competitive seats are all but taken? I can't really say West was much to root for in Moto2, but given the fact that he tried to sell all his possessions to stay in racing has made me an instant follower. (Despite Pov's disapproval of a man chasing his dream at all cost.) On a related note, I'd like to see him here in the AMA too, not just to see how he fairs, but because surely his girlfriend would be something to look at in the flesh.

Selling your belongings when your 30+ years old to ride a 20th+ place machine, in a series where historically riders on average are finished in their upper 20's, for free, is irresponsible. What exactly is the dream at this point, that somehow he will miraculously defy all odds and magically transform into one of the top riders on the planet and make millions of dollars. Reality has to kick in over fantasy. Losing this ride is blessing in disguise. He had more than his share of shots at the big time and it didnt work out. No crime in that. Reaching for the brass ring in the corporate world can go on forever, not true in sport, especially bike racing. He can still make a paycheck racing, but he needs to focus on whats realistic, and becoming a GP star is not realistic.

Just because you didn't chase your dreams (assuming you had some) doesn't mean others who do are foolish. Again, I hadn't paid much attention to Ant West, but after reading his willingness to sacrifice all his worldly possessions to continue doing what he loves and chasing a dream, I've become a fan.

Pov, do you follow baseball any? I do. Being from LA, naturally I'm a Dodgers fan. About 10 years ago I met a player named Paul Lo Duca, he was a catcher for the Dodgers. This guy spent close to 10 yeas in the minors. nearly at the age of 30, one day he was called up to replace an injured player. He quickly became a fan favorite because he showed a lot of heart on the field of play and was getting the job done. I'm sure at some point he may have thought of throwing in the towel. Its a good thing he didn't have people like you whispering in his ear, not that he would have paid any attention to you anyway.

These are the people who inspire us not to give up. Its never too late.

I'm gonna check Westy's website to see if he has a 'donate' button.

EDIT: crap, I can't find his website. Can anybody help me with this?

I'd like to thank Cliche for directing me to Westy's website. I'm trying to become a "fan sponsor" but I don't see a donate or paypal button. There is one in the merchandise page, but I don't see the option to become a sponsor on that page. I just send West an email to see what's up. Check it out.

BTW, now that PS has been infected by the new strain of neo-boppers, much of whom are Aussies (no disrespect to the good Australians)

, I challenge you guys to support one of your own beyond the words typed on the forum. And to other fans who may have a bit of disposable income (you don't necessarily have to send the guy the minimum 100, I'm sure he won't turn down whatever you can send him). Check back here for an update.

Oh, Pov, you don't have to click, I know you disapprove of people chasing their dreams.

Did this guy sell all his .... and pay the Dodgers to get called up. Of course not. Plus, in MLB, you dont have to be a star or even make it to the bigs to make enough money to chase your dreams. A lot of these guys get drafted o ut of high school, sign a huge bonus, then get sent to the minors where they can develope. They draw a decent salary on top of the signing bonus. A million dollar bonus and a regular salary can allow you to hang around looking for a break. Thats not the case in GP. MLB players are in their prime at 30, history shows GP is not a sport you can gracefully grow old in. Is this comparison starting to look silly to you yet

I guess u dont follow baseball, because ur talking out of .... Past the first couple of rounds, signing bonuses will help pay off a car to get to work. Drawing pay from minors is hardly a living. They all usually have other jobs, and part time at that to work around their playing schedule. Its ok Pov. Im actually surprised by ur attitude regarding people who in ur opinion should give up. But really, i shouldnt be surprised.

You ignored the simple question, did he sell his .... and pay the Dodgers to get called up, then offer to play for free. After reading a little about this guy, maybe he can offer Ant some advice on how to make it to the big leagues if your lacking a bit on talent.

hahaha I didn't ignore the question; I'm just not in the habit of answering stupid irrelevant questions that have nothing to do with the point being debated. The idea and point is ‘sacrifice’ (which you conveniently missed or cannot comprehend), and it comes in different forms. Lo Duca sacrificed and toiled in the minors after being picked in the 25th round. But he was undeterred. And his perseverance paid off close to ten years later.

Your assessment of Lo Duca's lack of natural talent may have been the reason he was overlooked, however, he made it up with guts, tenacity, and willingness to sacrifice and work hard for years toward his dream. This counted toward him being a good baseball player and infinitely important an inspiration to many others. Unlike some athletes who have lots of talent and spend their time as arrogant people who run their mouths and get into trouble. Anyway Pov, I'm sure your advice to Lo Duca would have been, ‘give it up kid, your time long passed you’. Just like your advice now would be to Ant West, give it up kid, you’re never going to make it in this sport’. Well buddy, I disagree with your discouragement and disapproval of these guys to follow their dreams and continue working toward their goals. Even if statistically it seems they will never achieve being the top riders, perhaps they want to be on the field doing what they love.

Fixed it for ya.

I would most definetly advise him not to sell his house and belongings to ride a piece of .... CRT machine for free. I would advise him to get in a series that pays him for his services. Dorna needs to step up and ban the practice of ride for free. Its counter productive to the series.

i agree that riding for free is bad for the riders and hence the series.

but that leads to the question, pov are you in favor of controlled minimum wages?

i am, and quite frankly i'd be in favor of a salary cap of a maximum of 5.000.000€ , nobody needs more money and why do some riders need personal sponsors?just put the stickers on both bikes and by doing that help the team out

Exactly.......being an Aussie i like to see aussies do well over seas but its time for Anthony to realise that. Hes had alot of chances and nothing came of, yeah hes quick but not quick enough for Motogp.

Im in favour of a Salary cap as well, just thinkif we had a salary cap and riders had No personal sponsors then that might free up more Sponsors for the teams. Where the money really is needed...

Really? Do you know how sponsorship works?

Say your a spanish company and you have the choice to sponsor lorenzo or "yamaha factory racing" which do you think will draw more attention in spain?

Companies sponsor individual riders because there name draws attention not because they happen to ride in GP.

How the hell did this dude get a thread?

Doesn't he suck donkey ballz anyways? You folks are crazy.

Ant West numbers

2000. 250cc 6th

2001. 500cc 18th

2003 250 7th

2004 250 11th

2005 250 17th

2006 250 11th

2007 250cc 15th

Motogp 17th

2008 Motogp 18th

2010 Moto2 23rd

2011 Moto2 22nd

Shinya your wrong. You can clearly see he is improving the older he gets. He was 23rd in 2010 and 22nd in 2011.

If he continues on his current trajectory of one spot per year in the year 2035 he will be a world champ. Ant clearly has long term goals in mind.

In fact he will probabaly wrap up his title at Iraqi motorsports park. Just remember by 2035 Iraq will be a shining beacon of democracy and capitalism in the middle east.

Every fiber in my body says no way, anyone should be able to maximize their earning potential. Im just saying no one should work for free, especially in a sport as dangerous as bike racing. Dorna should be embarrassed at the entry list, it is an absolute sham for some of these riders to be in GP, and for what, so for 10 seconds at the start of a race we see 1 more row of bikes. As a matter of fact. GP should set themselves apart from the rest of the bike racing world and go to 104% timing
