The $400 Million Dollar Question?

I would venture a guess that those three riders combined salaries do not match Rossi's salary

I have heard that Stoner is not far off Rossi on salary?

May even be more now if his dad sorted a clever contract with Honda regarding pay per win.

ANd Lorenzo isn't that far back from that either is he?

I wasn't saying they would match but it would at least be considerablly close, even if Pedro/Stoner were on 2-3 mill each for the year, there's 4-6 mill.....

I don't think anyone is arguing that Rossi shouldn't be paid what he is, for no one in the field has come close to matching his success in the sport yet, not too mention merchandising and overall GP attedance numbers or TV audiences which are noticably enhanced by the presence of VR on track.........even mid-pack

The end of the day its bussiness not a sport, Rossi is the draw card. But that will only last so long, the bloke needs results. . . .

Talps, I think you are right !!!!!

I think MotoGP is ultimately enhanced by the presence of VR mid pack.

So then genius, why are they still all turning up then? I haven't seen too many Lorenzo land flags or Stoner boner shirts in the crowds this season........

To be fair tho mate, You try buying any rider other than rossi gear. There is some online if you search and dole out big bucks but .... all at the race tracks.

True, but they don't have to buy it. And from what I could see, notably at Mugello being a home round, an awful lot of the paraphernalia was made buy the fans as well, but this is still true at other circuits.

The point being is that some are claiming VR doesn't deserve the money he is being paid, I completely disagree.

i dont think anybody deserves multi million £$ pay cheques a year. It's killing all sports. But if it's on offer you cant blame them for taking it. I know i would .

I think if any group does, it's motorcycle racers. How many have been killed in the last ten years, while racing? (2 last year if I remember correctly)

How many auto racers have been killed in the last ten years, while racing?

How many golfers have been killed in the last ten years, while playing golf?

But I do agree with a performance bonus so the 'loafers', ones who won't push, can't just show up, ride and get paid.

Probably more than bike racers, but there is a bunch more auto races . Nascar had a rash of deaths in a small time frame. It took the death of Earnhardt for them to institute safer barriers and i dont think they have lost anyone since. I think its unbelievable we dont lose more bike racers than we do, especially on some of the .... tracks here in the US

None that i can think of, but there was one who got the .... beat out of him by his wife

I will never ever understand how golfers are the highest paid athletes in the world. Its hard to believe there are that many millions of Sunday couch taters, but the numbers dont lie.

Not as many as soldiers, truck drivers ect and there paid minimum wage.

And IIRC he was against compulsory safety kit like neck braces ect but had he been wearing the item (neck brace) he was so against he may have lived.

Yep, he was against anyone telling him he had to do anything. He wore an open face helmet and refused to wear a HANS device.Nascar begged him to wear better equipment, his family begged him to wear better eqipment, but it didint fit his image of being the 10 foot tall, bulletproof, Intimidator Experts say he would have walked away unscathed if he had been wearing the device. Now they are mandatory, and with the safer barrier, these cats are walking away from vicious crashes with no problems whatsoever.

There was an article in the Daily News the other day about a guy who lead a protest against helmet laws

and during the protest he went over the bars and died instantly. Needless to say, he was riding a Harley.

$400 Millions? What exactly is the source for that stratospheric number? The richest Formula 1 teams are rumored to spend around 290 millions so I very much doubt the figure.

Talpa once again assumes we are all inferior in our general knowledge of motogp and gullable to boot.

The only gullable ones amongst us are the Rossi die hards who believe their beloved #46 still has what it takes.

We are still waiting for the 9 time world champ to prove us wrong but this will not happen unless bridgestone design a tyre for him especially. Ducati and JB build a red M1 and only then will he be in a position to crack the top 5.

But imagine what CS could do on this greatly improved Duc if given the opportunity !!! Damn

Hahaha. Sorry, Gummy, but that was very witty. Great play.

(I know you're a bopper Digs, but youre a bopper that I like (among many others).

Now Digs, Gummybear has a point in principle though, as designing a tire for a bike has suddenly made many realize its advantage (as it appears some people have suddenly got smart and understand the difficulty for Rossi/Ducati under a level-playing field tire (aka spec tire). I mean, not having a tire designed to work on your bike is a major disadvantage, right? Some blame Bridgestone for a ...... tire (though I just read a quote that its the most amazing product for GP racing) while others find the fault with Ducati for not moving toward a bike that specifically works with said tire. Now digger, here is the kicker! Can you imagine what advantage there might be in designing a tire for a specific individual?!? Stop and ponder for a moment that previous question. Why are the same people suddenly smart about the terrible disadvantage for the Ducati under a specific tire, then be so dumb when it comes to understanding the advantage of specifically designing a tire for a rider, from that rider's input?

i agree 100% jums, my problem is with the VR doesnt have what it takes comment. Im not going to bother going into the argument anymore, as i've had too many beers, and really couldnt give a ....

Just curious has anyone actually complained about the amount of money that Ducati are putting in?

I wouldn't think it would even be an issue, especially that they restructured their business to accommodate Rossi.

It was clear from the start that they where willing to do what it takes to get it sorted.

It seems to me that a bigger point of contention is that they are happy to put more cash on the line purely because of Rossi.

I would think it normal for these companies to spend up big to achieve their goals, just curiously does the figure quoted for Honda include the salary for Casey?

Just my POV on the matter.

Cheers

I think this is jumkie's main argument, that they are spending a lot more than they were prepared to spend for stoner.

Whilst I think this is relevant when the question of stoner having bike advantages is raised, I otherwise don't have a problem. They probably have more money because rossi is with them in the first place, are likely still spending considerably less than honda and yamaha, and would be remiss not to expend whatever resources they have to fix the bike with the current results not really consistent with a long term future in motogp, particularly with valentino on board which means bad results can't be blamed on the rider(s).
