Tardozzi: Stoner is the best rider in MotoGP

Newly appointed BMW World Superbike team manager hints at a MotoGP future for himself
Former Ducati World Superbike team manager Davide Tardozzi has come out in support for Casey Stoner by labelling him the best rider in MotoGP over Valentino Rossi.

Tardozzi, who will be helming BMW's World Superbike effort in 2010 after the decision to leave Ducati at the end of last season, says he still harbours desires to take a managerial role in MotoGP one day.

Indeed, Tardozzi was linked with a high-profile position in Ducati's MotoGP team following Livio Suppo's decision to leave, but was attracted by BMW's promising package for the moment.

“Being truthful, MotoGP remains something very close to me, so if I was to get the opportunity...,” he told gpone.com. “The new regulations that will see a return to 1,000cc will make it the king of motorcycling classes once more.”

Even so, despite swapping his Ducati branded wear for BMW colours over the winter, Tardozzi still had kind things to say about his former employers, even suggesting that in Stoner they have the best rider in MotoGP.

“Ducati has the best rider in the championship, Casey Stoner – and I say that with no fear of being misinterpreted. The new regulations that have significantly reduced the amount of testing will also favour him; he only needs one lap to be able to go quickly.”

Stoner, world champion in 2007, had his 2009 season spoiled by illness, but was still able to secure fourth position in the standings with four wins.

boppers can have there say

Ducati through n through blinkers on or not.maybe he wants the Guareschi/suppo position one day. ?

That's a very bold statement. I agree with him to a degree, though I think that Rossi & Lorenzo are about just as good. In the end, its really impossible to know the truth unless we put all these men on the same exact machines.

I'd go along with "Casey's the fastest." He can ride anything at blinding speed.

Overall "best" is another kettle of fish. As of last year, I'd have to give #46 the nod.

No arguing with the fact that Stoner is fast
Steady, reliable, regular, able to develop a bike, stay on without EC ???????????????
He's been Nr 1 just once and that was 2 yrs ago

The BEST rides under 46

Tasrdozzi is full of cr..

aka was it ? i'm leaving because i've been at it yrs and i'm tired etc etc

Returns a few weeks later to BMW in WSBK Doh
and now he's a Duc Fan Boy Again.

He's had too much Peroni

Even I conclude that Rossi is the best. Stoner, however, is damn good and clearly 2nd far above anyone else in the series. And he is such a close second that I only say Rossi is better because of his track record. Had they both started at the same time in the same place and raced the same classes I wouldn't be surprised to see Stoner eclipse Rossi but Rossi clearly got the better start in life. Born in the heartland of European racing and minutes from some of the best tracks around. Stoner, born in Australia far from the circuits that Rossi grew up thinking as a natural occurrence.

An interesting thought experiment would be to reverse their roles. If Rossi had to start in Aussieland would he have had the fortitude to one day line up in MotoGP? Would his dad like Stoner's good old dad (a hero to all fathers) have given up everything he had to push the boy up the ranks (that my friends is the definition of a fathers love for his son)? Would the whole family have lived in a trailer to see it through? Truly, this is the thing. This is why Stoner fans (and clearly I am one) are in the Stoner camp. We all know the road that Stoner has taken, and it's admirable. I wonder... if things had been different. Well, we all know what Stoner's done to get to the bigs.

Would it be the same thing if Burgess wasn't there?
Rossi IS the greatest rider in Moto GP history, yes of course with a zilion racewins and titles, developing the honda and yamaha. But by the time Stoner has been in Moto GP on a factory machine they have about equal wins.Rossi has the titles exept for one but they are equally fast.
It will be interresting when rossi retires and Stoner get Burgess till his pension

I basically agree with you; it is undeniable that rossi has won the last 2 championships and stoner has not.

However whilst tardozzi is quite likely being mischievous or self serving it is also possible he knows more than most about how good (or bad) the 2008 and 2009 ducatis were, and I hope he knows something good about the likely quality of the 2010 ducati. His statement that the engine rule is likely to favour casey's practice method would seem reasonable, and I don't recall much complaint about the rule from ducati and /or stoner as opposed to some other camps. At some stages in the last 2 years rossi and jb appear to have needed to tinker all week-end to find a second or more to match stoner, and this approach would seem likely to be no longer viable. Valentino of course may just adapt and change his approach as he always seems to have managed in the past.

I think anyone of 4 riders will win races on a regular basis and I believe that three (CS, VR, JL) have a chance to win next years championship or the one after that and so on.

I exclude Dani because I don't think he has a championship in him. He is a 250 champion of which there are many in motogp (but not many motogp champions among them...1 actually).

This subject usually inspires the rider v racer debate and putting anyone against VR upsets the universal equilibrium, but he has some serious challengers.

Either way it is a great time to be watching racing.

Meh ...... Rossi says same, everyrider knows theres one guy out there they have to beat...... Stoner!

Many others have said it, Tardossi says it ...... nothing new
<

The only folks who can't accept it is the Rossiboppers

If the Duc. is working, even vaguely well, nobody can beat Stoner ..... period. Folks start crying Tardossi is a Ducati fan boy, but in reality he has clearly "dissed" Ducati buy exclaiming Stoner as the best.

FP said exactly the same thing earlier this year in an online magazine on MotorSport (wish I could remember the name of that mag!!!) He said that if they change the bike drastically it only takes Stoner 1 lap to be on the limit again. He commented that they could make chassis changes or engine characteristics changes and still Stoner went to the limit immediately. Personally I believe is feel for what a bike is doing and the limit is unmatched and his control of the performance of the bike through throttle, bars and pegs is also unmatched. Now that he has a decent amount of experience running at the front he has earned the accolades that he is receiving.

Rossi has many championships and has accomplished much and rightly so it clouds people's judgement when it comes to answering who is the best rider in MotoGP NOW. I think that all the educated insiders speaking with out bias would answer the same as Tardozi has.

I don't think anyone who over trains or can't maintain the right diet to remain riding the bike can be considered the best.

Perhaps he was driven by knowledge of the marked superiority of the yamaha in 2009 as opposed to 2007 when the ducati and yamaha may have been near to parity

Oddly, I can't seem to recall arguments of similar logic from you in 2007.

Fair enough. I have never denied that stoner needs in excess of a couple more championships to begin to warrant comparison with rossi overall. He may need to change teams to have a chance at this.

yeah thats what i tought!

hes good, fast but fell off the bike too often before being with ducati. and putting him over rossi...well i dont know! we could talk about that in lets say 5 years again, but i dont see it today.

Calling him the best is a joke. Gb makes some very good reasons why. The girl is fast, but besides that he is a complete tool and knows nothing of what it takes to be a winner. He makes horrible decisions one after another after another. "The best" is a person who does not call in when .... gets tough. He does not let off track issues effect his performance on the track. Casey Stoner is not the best and no matter how many championships he wins he never will be. He is just way to stupid. He reminds me of Cole Trickle. "I just know how to go fast." And thats it.
