No It shouldn't be banned tobacco advertising put a lot of money into the sport and have done for years, and like you say no one starts smoking because of an advertisement, and the sport is suffering because teams arn't geting the sponserships they need and good riders are going to waste. Teams are changing all the time even more so because when the teams don't get the sponsership they need, and they have to let good riders go elsewhere. Smoking in itself is becoming anti-social which isn't a bad thing. And drinking is becoming a bad thing (because the death rates for cirrhosis of the liver) have increased, so what next are they going to ban drinking advertisements too...

In the USA, motorcycle racing is a struggling sport, imo. The fan base is small. Any money from a legitimate, legal product should be welcomed. Should they ban McDonalds as a sponsor because it's unhealthy, too?

I agree General

....................what about betting? Folk get addicted to betting and screw thier lives up, yet Bet&Win gets plastered everywhere.................hell they even managed to get on the homepage here

Next they will ban Gillette, cause people may use the blades to slit their wrists....................where will it end?

I have to say though, the UK government is profiting highly from tobacco sales in the UK.......nice little tax earner.

Each motogp race gets an avergae of 250 million worldwide viewers (not sure how accurate that is, read it on a site the other day)........................so theres plenty of scope for new advertisers.

Telephonica pulling out was a huge blow, they should take up the Pons teams sponsirship, now their Golden Girl Alonso wont be racing for Renault in 07. They were (correct me if I'm wrong) the only telephonics company advertising in GP's, so they should have capitalised on that...................maybe we need T-Mobile to get a team sponsored, at least they have coverage throughout Europe./...................where as Telephonica are unknown in the UK (unless its badged under a differnent brand)

Telefonica may have pulled out for 2006 but with Alonso switching to Vodafone McLaren Mercedes in 2007 Telefonica now have little interest in Formula 1. I expect them to return to MotoGP in the near future and I would expect Vodafone to test the waters as well. They were a partial sponsor of Garry McCoy's 2004 NCR Xerox Nortel Networks Vodafone Ducati in WSB. I think they would be missing a market that is being taken advantage of by Telefonica if they didn't join the series. I would also be surprised if another telecommunications corporation such as Virgin or as Ben said, T Mobile joined.

Yup, now Telefónica is pissed off, but they could easily get a good team in MotoGP, in fact I read in Motociclismo that Yamaha contacted them to be on Rossi's bike, but they declined because "they didn't want to be associated with bandwagon jumpers".

yea & jumping over to alonso for 06 is'nt band waggon jumping... is it!

teleclownica!!!

Yeah, now theyre sinking all of their motorbike money into Alonso. Including (Apparently) ALL the sponsorship money they put into up-and-coming riders in Spain's domestic championships. I might have heard bad info, but isnt it correct that Telefonica did a lot, financially for local talent in Spain, Teo? Surely that's a blow to a good source for international talent. I think, of all the motoGP's sponsorship woes this year, the loss of Telefonica will do the most damage to the sport.

Yup Telefónica created the Movistar cup for kids under 14, that's where Pedrosa came from. Then Telefónica sponsored those youngsters in 125cc (Pedrosa, Olivé, Elías).
They did another one a few years later with CBR 600s (got critisiced for giving those bikes to unexperienced teenagers) and the project was cancelled after one year. The winner and 2nd of that championship have dissapeared, probably ended up in the CEV (Spanish championship, aka dead end)

Hey, Kat or Morgo, can you Imagine Telstra doing that here??? God this countries behind. And they call us developed. Spain is developed. All that motorsport!! You guys are lucky, Teo

Yup, there are other companies like Bancaja (Bank of Valencia) that promote young racers, they have various categories from pocket bikes up to 125cc GP. They pay full equipment to 15 or 20 kids plus partial funding to about 50 more or so kids.

There's also the Yamaha R6 and R1 cups, they are quite affordable, for the price of the bike you get the full season; new bike with the neccessary mods to race in circuit plus all the gear (leathers, helmet ...) and you get to race in 4 world championship tracks (Valencia, Jerez, Montmeló, Estoril)

There are other kids championships like Metra kit cup where the winners get prizes up to 6000€, (8000 USD) and the chance of a full sponsored season the next year.

We can't really complain about the situation.

still puddle jumpin teo.

I was originally annoyed that motogp would do something like this but I just read an article in Autoweek magazine about Three french newspapers that were fined for publishing photos of F1 drivers whos driver suits had tobacco logos on them. What I just learned (not news for you on the wrong side of the pond
<
)is that there is a European Union tobacco advertising legislation..
I just thought it was something the organisers of the different sports were deciding to not use tobacco ads.

OH well what can you do.
It happend here in the '90s when there was a ban to eliminate targeting the youth for ads and race teams like Smokin' Joe's Camel Honda.

Well, If you'd never heard the name before, it's not a bad guess. If you think about it it does sound like of of 'em fancy Italian clothing names.
