Casey Stoner fastest on Friday at Misano, but victory hopes thrown into doubt after 're-opening' a broken scaphoid bone.

Despite dominating both Friday practice sessions with a flawless opening day performance at Misano, Casey Stoner's San Marino Grand Prix hopes have been thrown into doubt by a freak wrist injury.

The reigning world champion finished the day a comfortable 0.418secs ahead of world championship leader Valentino Rossi - but somehow re-opened a broken scaphoid bone, damaged back in 2003, in the process.

"The scaphoid is a really strange one because there has been no impact on it," explained a surprised Stoner. "I was just adjusting my back protector before going out for one of my runs this afternoon and I felt some pain"

"It got worse as the session went on so we decided to check it out with the Clinica Mobile and I couldn't believe it when they showed me the x-ray - it seems the bone I broke in 2003 has re-opened."

The injury will make it extremely painful and awkward for Stoner to ride on Saturday, although the Australian will undergo physio and wear a special support in order to give it his best shot.

"It's not going to be easy and I'll have to take care not to cause any further damage but my plan is to compete tomorrow," confirmed the Ducati Marlboro rider. "It's a shame because other than that everything else went really well today.

"It's nice to get off to a good start at this circuit, we went well here last year and the bike and tyres seem to be working well already. Hopefully we can continue like this tomorrow," concluded Casey, currently 50 points behind Valentino Rossi after mistakes at the last two events.

Stoner won the 2007 San Marino Grand Prix from pole position.

damn that could cause him problems on a twisty track like this. if he qualify well he may ruin his chances on race day. he may play it safe and just aim for a front or second row and save himself for the race.

What a coincedence that he somehow re-injured his hand right on Valentino's home GP who was looking to go down in the History books if he wins. Stoner probably banged his hand around purposely to give himself an excuse.... what level will this guy stooped to. Alright alright, maybe not but damn.... just seems odd that he would somehow re-injured a broken bone some five years ago. Regardless, it seems like you Stoner fans will have an excuse this time around. Happy now?

and the field looks more competitive here, there will be no time to take it easy in the race.

ill save the stoners fans the trouble, you really are ....... stupid ! and that's from a rossi fan !

I just can't figure out how he could "re-open" a bone break that was 5 years old. The only explanation I can think of is that it never healed properly in the first place. If he's out tomorrow, Rossi is gonna no competition.

he wont be the first to ride with a busted wrist. once they strap it up and dose him up he will still be a formidable opponent for rossi , i have no doubt.

There is only one guy around here that has good conspiracy theories and he hasn't posted on this thread yet.

No mention on if it is his throttle/brake hand or clutch hand.

SuperShinya probably banged his head around purposely to come up with that post.

It is his clutch hand. Check MCN.

You are quite possibly correct. The scaphoid bone is prone to long term complications after fracture because of the nature of its blood supply, and if he does have avascular necrosis his career may be at risk.

I love a good conspiracy. I really really do....................but it seems like this can only be coincidence or mind games.

Conspiracies are great but they don't work when you get lots of people involved. The control tire conspiracy is plausible because it involves a close nit group of people who keep their mouths buttoned.

Everyone else says whatever they want when they want to say it. Stoner isn't going to hand Rossi a victory at his home GP. Dorna would never approach him b/c they don't know his reaction.

However, I have had a conspiracy revelation today.

I said that Rossi was out pushing a control tire b/c he was being disingenuous and he wanted to make himself look good. I was only half right. Ezy gave Rossi B-stones, in return Rossi is required to market a control tire to all motogp fans.

So simple. I don't know why I didn't see it before.
