Spies will beat Edwards and Tose at Valencia

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (michaelm @ Oct 27 2009, 03:08 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>5th or 6th

There's not question that it's within the realm of possibilities. If we assume that the top four will continue to be the top four that puts some fairly strong talent behind Spies. I don't think he's capable YET of beating Edwards on his own equipment. I also think Hayden will have a reasonable showing.

That puts Ben at 7th
<
Cheers.

I'm betting Spies will get a lot of 'he's a dangerous one' bitchings from other riders, just like what JT had in his rookie year.
<

i don't understand why people only bring up superbikes when talking about Spies. he has done MotoGP before. its not like this is completely new to him.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Noodlerizer @ Oct 26 2009, 09:57 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Spies will do fine, I expect top 10 and he will beat Toseland. I think that is reasonable.

I don't know how Spies will do against Colin Edwards and James Toseland. But if me and you were out on track Noodlerizer, you'd be smelling my burnt tires..... you can count on that!
<

I understand that Spies will be not be mooching someone's spare, but will instead be riding a 'new' bike built from standard Yamaha parts. The one-off nature of the race means Ben will likely get to run a new, fresh engine that only needs to last one weekend.
<
That alone might be worth several tenths. Ben and Colin both seem to 'ride' the front end in a similar manner. This suggests (?) that Yam will give Spies a bike setup similar to Edwards'. Between these factors, and Ben's native ability, I think he'll be surprisingly competitive right out of the box.

I'm thinking he'll place in the top 8. If he and his team can eek a few more tenths from the baseline setup, he just might give Colin a good scare.

Now seeing his whole WSB-season as a big picture (I cheared for Haga at the end
<
), I think Spies will be good in MotoGP...he was sooo above the others this year (including multiple GP-winner Biaggi...however by the end the Aprilia-Max combo seemed really competitive) that he just simply can not be that bad even on a totally different machinery.
<

It would be smart to wait with the judging till at least Toseland´s Portimao test ends, that can clear the picture a little (I am really curious how good the R1 is in other proven hands) but I would say Spies will definitely beat JT in Valencia and I expect him to give a hard time for Edwards also. No matter how much experience CE has with the M1 and Valencia, Spies is on a roll and he is way hungrier than his texan fellow. I hope his impact to MotoGP will be so big, that could shake this kinda boring championship a little for next year.

I'm sorry, but I have got to say this. Not only do you think you could beat me (a multiple national champion) in Superkarts, but you now think you can beat Noodles on a bike?! Keep dreaming. Oh and I await to see your name on the entry list to the British Superkart GP in July 2010 under the name 'Supershitya'

Back on topic, Edwards' software engineer reckons he'll beat Toseland (though not by much) but won't beat Edwards, both in Valencia or for 2010....interesting!

I'm still sitting on the fence...

OK, aside from Edwards and Toseland,
Will Spies beat Hayden ????
Will Spies beat Melandri ????
Will Spies beat Kalio ????
Will Spies beat De Angelis or Dovi ????
Will Spies beat Loris ????

For me, if BS ends up top 10, he has done very well. Lets be realistic.
He will of course be busting his ... for a good result, and probably the risk is that he will bin it trying, but if he lays down some fast laps, or qualifies well, and then bins it trying, it will be a good showing.
I am guessing he will finish about 9th - 10th around Melandri, Elias, CV, De Pun (if he races).

I am also really interested to see how he goes against Simoncelli next year.
I think Simoncelli will be get full factory spec gear from Honda, and has the potential to be a front runner. I think he will be fast tracked into the Repsol team pronto to replace Dovi.

Some of you guys are forgetting that Spies came up on 125's and 250's just like a lot of the GP riders. He could take to the 800's a lot quicker than you think.

(Just to add more fuel to the fire

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (alex29 @ Oct 27 2009, 10:07 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Top 10 is a realistic goal for spies at Valencia. Can spies master the M1?
everyone else who is not called toesland seems able so yes, i would say that he will master the M1.

hmmn spies is a tricky one-i think he has hugely outclassed the superbike world but moto gp is a whole nother level, world superbike riders are amatures compared to moto gp. you watch the variation in lap times in WSBK, Spies was backing off by almost half second a lap about a 3rd way into the race in some WSBK races to reserve tyres, if he backed off like that in moto gp he would lose about 6 places within 10 laps, he will have to learn to ride at the limit for long periods.

is he just a big fish in a small pond or is he as good as the moto gp aliens? well i think he is not quite as good as stoner lorenzo or rossi but will give Danni a run for his money when he gets the factory M1 which i believe he is actually getting anyway?

i remember he did quite well on the suzuki last time out, now he is on the easiest to ride bike out there the almighty M1, im going to say yes he will beat Edwards and he would be quite embarrassed not to beat Toseland i think.
spies is also a qualifying maestro i betting on him getting at least 5th on the grid!
i reckon he will get a top 6 in the race too

wet race all bets are off as anything can happen and usually does!

Fixed that for ya. You see he would be in front because he is a receiver.

marco simoncelli smoked Biaggi on a wild card ride, Baggi is long past his best!

Sorry that spot is already reserved for marco" sorry I could see you through my afro" simoncelli. Although I think it could also go out to alvra "i look so young I made micheal jackson horney" bautista.

Spies did very well at laguna 08 but the zook couldnt have been all that bad, after all vermi came 3rd

Now thats a good point

I'd say given Spies' two previous wildcard results - (and the aforementioned early experience on 125s and 250s) adapting to the 800s will be easier for him than it has been for Hayden. That he'll beat poor Toesland is a given. That he might do better than Kallio or Edwards - won't surprise me in the least. Kallio is still struggling with the Duke and Edwards (a good guy to be sure) is I think, a bit complacent - having exhibited none of the fire (and yes - none of the crashes either) we've seen from Dovi thus far. I'm guessing if gets the opportunity to pass Hayden, he won't - just out out of a generally of diplomacy. Gotta say, I am so happy that Spies didn't end up getting shoehorned onto a satellite Ducati.
