True enough. Loads of sponsorship cash probably didn't hurt. Sete showed far more promise. I can't recall too many races where Biaggi threatened Rossi but I remember Rossi sweating his balls off trying to keep up to Sete several times.

in 2001 sete won 1 biaggi won 3 rossi won 11
in 2002 sete didnt any and biaggi won 2 rossi won 11
in 2003 sete won 4 biaggi won 2 rossi won 9
in 2004 sete won 4 biaggi won 1 rossi won 9
in 2005 sete and biaggi won .... all rossi won 11
in 2006 sete won .... all biaggi gone. rossi won 5

so to be honest neither sete or biaggi ever had rossi sweating his balls off.

At one stage during 04, Sete was really pushing Rossi and only trailed off at the end of the season.

And how many of those wins for Rossi were after a fight with Sete to the final corner.

I would love to see Sete back but it looks like the era for the younger riders so he would probably strugle a bit.

sete came second to rossi 4 times in 03,04 & 05. im not disputing sete was not a great rider, im just trying to point out that he never was a championship contender during the years he raced rossi
<
some of these second's were several seconds behind rossi if i remember correctly.

championship pts.

01. rossi,325..gibbers 119 -206
02. rossi, 355..gibbers 51 -304
03. rossi,357..gibbers 277 -80
04. rossi, 304..gibbers 257 -47
05. rossi, 367..gibbers 157 -210
06. rossi, 247..gibbers 95 -152

so he may have caused a little concern in 04 but was still nearly 2 whole races behind rossi. he had 2 good years but they wernt that good looking at the points gap.

but as ive said. i dont like gibbers but i do think he was a great rider.

Rog, remind me how many points 2nd & 3rd were behind last year's champ. Would you say the 3rd place guy was ....?

Sete (and for that matter Biaggi) were better than their points showed, they just had two big problems: 1.Rossi was that good & 2.DNFs killed them trying to keep up. Fast they were but consistently finishing they were not (oh, and it wasn't always their fault).

Also, Sete didn't have the spirit of Rossi to overtake regardless of consequences. Something I use to dislike about Rossi but now admire (cuz I use to think Rossi was a bully); something Toesland has shown you can do and still have class.

Funny this. I guess the only one that would know though is Uccio, eh.

you have to finish races to win championship as you reminded us in 06. rossi won 5 nicky won 2 and the championship, rossi having 3 dnf's and a championship damaging 8th due to skud and nicky only having 1 .
and no i would not say 2nd or 3rd is .... but when there a country mile behind in 2nd its not the same as a fight to the line as was suggested.

I agree Sete was not a title contender and forgot to mention that although he didn't win many races didn't mean he wasn't pressuring Rossi but Jumkie made all the missing points.
