Rossiboppers are a breed apart.

I know we,ve had the bopper thread, but a few comments have been mulling around in my head for a while. BL talked about Rossi as "our boy". Kinda personal isn,t it? What makes the difference between the majority of Rossi fans and fans of other riders is the messiah effect or perhaps the gathering of "fair weather" fans. Its much the same as support of football teams. The top team seems to have the most supporters. Why? Well its the shortcut to fan happiness isn,t it. Sorta makes sense, doesn,t it? You want to enjoy your sport, so why not back the best and feel good more often as they will usually win. A good strategy? Maybe? A sign of real character? Not really. Most of us motogp fans support a rider from our country and maybe somebody else if you have no countryman competing.I,ve been a fan of Vermeulin , but when he fails to make an impact on a race (mostly)I support the nearest thing, Casey Stoner. Next year I don,t have a choice. Looks like its only Casey. In the 90,s following Doohan was rewarding as he usually won, even though the races were often boring. A bit like the situation for Rossi fans 2001-05 (if not earlier). Italians that back Rossi- I have no issues with them; but non-Italian Rossi fans I treat with a lot of suspicion. And a hell of a lot of them are Brits. Even when Toseland was racing, he got little support from most Brits. He wasn,t giving them much joy was he?
The next thing to consider is that if you have chosen somebody because they usually win and satisfy the fans desire for good feelings, you will feel REALLY aggrieved if something or somebody stands in the way. Look what Hayden did in 2006. He didn,t win on merit, just too much bad luck befell Rossi and it just wasn,t right. Then 2007! Bloody Stoner had no talent; it was that ridiculously fast Ducati that had an unfair advantage and its electronic package enabled the rider to strap in and just go for the ride. No skill really, just a mysterious melding of bike and individual.Stoner had the jigsaw pieces that perfectly matched the Ducatis pieces. Again, Stoner was nothing special, just the most extraordinary symbiosis. But Rossi's titles in 2008 and 2009 were pure rider talent; Lorenzo and Stoner are just not in the same league as the chosen one. "Chosen one". Geddit. The one the emotially insecure choose to maximise their chances of post race orgasm! So when anybody challenges any aspect or Rossis dominance it is a serious and immediate threat to the Rossiboppers world. It must be challenged with fervour, with vigour and usually with a total lack of logic, but with a huge dose of righteous indignation. My boy is my path to pleasurable viewing, and I will not let you take it away from me.You have all seen the signs, the posts. Talpa is the latest in a long line of the faithful, but not the first. Others that spring to mind are Babelfish, Roger (why chopperman?), BL etc etc. So thats the difference. All fans are defensive about their rider, but many Rossi fans are not only defending their rider, they are defending their whole purpose of being a motogp fan! That is the difference.
A great tradition in Australia is supporting the underdog. If I support Stoner, that is patently not the case. But I have huge respect for the fans here that stoically support their man, even though they are met with disappointment week after week. Thats what I call a real test of character; being faithful despite all the repeated disappointments. Hayden and Melandri, and maybe even Canepa fans deserve a whole lotta respect in my book. Brits that have ignored Toseland and back Rossi, deserve contempt. What happened to that Churchillian, fight them in the trenches spirit? Seems that it is long gone....................

This thread actually doesn’t really merit a reply, but it’s so easy to pick apart its too hard to resist.

I obviously have many problems with the drivel above, but the point I wish to bring up is that one does not need to be emotionally insecure to support Valentino Rossi and Motogp/Bike racing in general. And Bunyip you seem, as always, to be flinging piles of Poorly fed Dog feaces.

I don’t believe I was emotionally insecure when I support/ed Wayne Gardner, Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Rainey, Michael Doohan, Loris Caparossi, Troy Corser, Troy Bayliss, Colin Edwards, Anthony Gobert (oh those two wheel slides PI 1996!!), Kevin Curtain, Barry Sheene, Jamie Stauffer, Matt Miladin, Ben Spies, Chris Vermulen, Garry McCoy, Frankie Chili, Carl Fogarty………and on and on……each of them successful and no real guantees of winning week in week out…….you get it yet?

Probably not so I’ll point it out, as a fan of Valentino Rossi I am a fan of motorcycle racing, VR is the GOAT-it makes sense…….and no that’s not justifying why I follow Motogp! My 12th 20+grand weekend toy in the shed does that all by itself!
If I choose to detract from other riders-normally just CS, it’s because his fans are extremely irritating and their/your behaviour seems to go unchecked by the more neutral types here. I’m attributing this to the underdog thing, as it defies all other explanation.

Always supporting the loser due to allegiance is of course admirable, most people though prefer not to be disappointed week in week out, hence the fan base of successful teams, sportspeople etc. This is not insecurity, but common sense, most of us like being happy and not miserable constantly, however VR has gathered such a following not from just winning week in week out, CS did that in 07 and it was some of the most boring racing in the history of the sport.

It’s all in the execution……

And as for the patriarchal digs, well we Aussies can happily support VR with the most successful crew chief ever in his garage who happens to be from Adelaide South Australia!! Aren’t the techs more important than the rider nowadays???!!

Trenches were I while back now old timer, but of course we won’t forget. Relating this to Bike racing is however, absurd. Almost as absurd as your Chamberlain/Stoner Tie-in.

BTW that sour grape taste still lingering, must be, piss poor attempt at Anti-Rossi fan thread and added to science as much as Hitler did world peace!

It's obviously more difficult to support a rider/team/athlete who doesn't win. It's easier to support a rider/team/athlete who doesn't win but gives us emotions... a good pass in motogp, a smart dribbling in a football match, an extreme attempt in pole vault. It's even easier to support a rider/team/athlete who wins and gives us emotions, as is Rossi to me. That's my explanation, you can't deny Rossi is the man who gave the real motogp fan the most intense emotions in these last years (I mean the way he rides, not the titles he achieved). Then there could be too much hype around him, there are surely many 'blind' fans as many here call them, but he fully deserves to have fans from all around the world to me.
Then, regarding '06 and '07 championship seasons, I agree with you Bunyip, even if you put it there too drastic. I think even the biggest Rossi fans would admit that Stoner won the 2007 title with merit, if they decided to talk seriously.

I don't think this thread deserves to go anywhere either, but bunyip has suckered you talpa; he mentioned churchill not chamberlain, but provoked a reference to hitler from you, and in any argument the first to involve hitler/the nazis automatically loses. I am not sure bunyip can be let off either as mention of churchill veers perilously close to hitler, and had he actually referred to chamberlain it would definitely have qualified as close enough

The problem with your MEGA post is not your insinuations and insults but the very excistence of the post. That someone can sit down and write an extreemly angled and provocative post and conclude with this:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>All fans are defensive about their rider, but many Rossi fans are not only defending their rider, they are defending their whole purpose of being a motogp fan! That is the difference.

There are better sayings than "throwing stone in a glass hose" for this, but my english isn't good enough. In short it's just hillarious.

Or maybe something like this: A lifelong fight against ... outside marriage, prostiution, bla bla bla, you know the drill, with a mistress with friends installed in an appartment down town for years.

A guy like Micheal might be able to write something about fans in general and Rossi fans in particular without loosing his own integrety, like you just did, but we all know it would be very different.

Bit slow this evening mate.......the chamberlain thing was a couple of months back by Bunny in reference to CS's alleged persecution by the media, I just threw it in for absurdity reference.

My neat comparison of Bunny's scientific analysis and the Fallen Furhour's contribution to world peace was extremely accurate,

That right there smells of the definiton of a fair weather fan. But I will allow it since it makes more sence that you would be a fan of a fair weather rider, who is as full of as much .... as your post.

To question peoples character because of who they root for is just retarted. Sure some people like rossi because he is a winner or because he is a free spirit, whos enjoyment for the sport we love is second to none. Well my friend, I would have to question your charecter due to the fact that you hate on him for no other reason than his popularity. You are a hater in every sence of the word.

p.s. spell check for christ sake, what are you ...... five?

The remedy for the boppers is not the reverse-boppers... that adds to the problem, kind of compounds it
<
The remedy is all about being honest about one's likes and dislikes.

There will always be one or two riders that will attract more of our simpathy, and others that we will never like even if they are skilled and win. Honesty means admitting this rather than thinking that our likes and dislikes are the rule of everything. Of course when the rider you like fights the one you don't like, you root for "your" rider". Nothing wrong with that!

By the way, it is not automatic that those who win the most attract more fans. Agostini has won more than anybody else, but he never topped the most-loved list (apart from girls' lists maybe...
<
) I myself was never a fan of Ago: when I was 8-10 years old I was a fan of Hailwood, Pasolini and Saarinen, but not Agostini. Why? I could see he was a great champion but I just didn't like him. Every time Pasolini or Saarinen beat him, I was happy
<

I never had any special enthusiasm for Kenny Roberts either, but Barry Sheene was another story. Who won a race among Lawson, Rainey or Gardner was indifferent to me, I just enjoyed the show, but I liked Spencer and Schwantz a lot and rooted for them. I used to like Cadalora, even if he wasn't a great winner. And I liked Doohan even if he killed the show in too many races
<

Fast forward to our days -- I like Rossi and Stoner. I also think they are the best by far, but that's personal. Pedrosa rides extremely well but he leaves me indifferent. I do not like Lorenzo, who reminds me of Biaggi, another rider I never liked. I appreciate their skill, but I'm happier if "my" riders win. I'm fortunate, because that happens most of the times
<
-- maybe they are really the best

MR MDub, What spelling don,t you like? Spell check is american and gets many of our words wrong.

Rosssi is too easy to follow- he wins, he smiles for the camera, he has charisma, he creates humour (and that means his behind the scenes manipulating is easier to excuse). Following Stoner is much harder: the lack of charisma, the limited praise of his combatants, his constant injuries and poor health. I think it would (would have been) easy to support Toseland. Charming in person, dogged spirit, a talented musician. I think we Stoner fans deserve a lot of credit for supporting the sour one. You see, its a bit like being there with your poxy younger brother at the local tennis comp. He,s playing this cool guy (imagine Brad Pitt or George Clooney) and your brother is a weedy ugly guy that spits constantly. But you still support him, because he is family, and few others support him. He may also happen to be a bloody good tennis player, that is a real pleasure to watch. Freakish shots you don,t see very often.
This past few years I have stopped supporting our national rugby league and cricket teams. When we play NZ in league, I go for them. When our cricket team plays anybody, I hope for an upset, Why? Because there comes a time when you perceive arrogance in a team , and the less talented , but dedicated opponent seems more appealing. You support the underdog. Many people do, because they see the less talented one having a real go, and the other guy has most of the support anyway. Thats why I have an issue with fair-weather fans; There is no commitment to the guy that fails, the guy that is less appealing. There is more of a desire to protect ones own feelings than show dedicated support to an also ran.
Obviously not all Rossi fans are fair -weather fans , but I do believe that the loudest Rossi supporters here may well fit that category, and I was only giving a reason why. I specifically mentioned the fact that I support Casey more than CV now, so I am not perfect either. However Alex Espargaro is my no 2.

Fishing Bunyip mate? Not enough time off? Take a leave and rest a while… (Just joking
<
).

Firstly, Rossi is a living Legend of motorcyclists (with numbers to back him up), that gets rid of a lot of Nationalistic crap about brits not backing up Toseland.

Secondly, get off the crap Bunyip, because you could also backup Edwards after Vermuelen and before Stoner, but you also prefer to backup the… how did you called it… ‘Winner’ as in Stoner and not Edwards.

Thirdly and personally, to me it just happens to coincide that I bought my bike in December 1999, so I started getting really into track days a couple of months later. After which I started to follow MotoGP a lot, got really into it when Rossi and Biaggi had a couple of cat fights, I never liked Biaggi persona, and I laughed at Rossi celebrations. The rest is History. So no insecurity here mate; in fact, I am pretty secure (with a slip now and then) about the numbers, achievements and quotes I reply to!

By the way, I also like Melandri as a Rider…
