*This is a serious post, not intended to just start ..... I genuinely want to learn*

I'll preface my question with this statement: I like Rossi. I was also a big fan of Stoner when he was around I also like MM, Dovi, Lorenzo, and Petrux, etc

Can anyone explain to me the animosity many here seem to have towards Rossi?

From a relatively casual watcher of MotoGP for the past 7 years (I watch every race, except Moto3), I don't seem to see the blatant favoritism of Rossi that everyone else sees. I know the announcers talk about him constantly, which seems obvious given the fact that his following is enormous compared to your average rider. I read competing articles about the Michelin debacle, new vs old frame, I remember Lorenzo vs Rossi, etc...

Maybe I'm just a Rossi sympathizer without realizing it completely, but I feel most of the Rossi vs EVERYTHING issues can quite simply be explained when you consider MotoGP is a business first, and a sport second. Rossi = money, so of course when push comes to shove, Yamaha, Dorna, etc are going to at least consider ways to keep the guy happy-ish.

The survival or success of MotoGP doesn't depend on Rossi, obviously, but he sure makes them a lot of money and helps bring in new fans which is always good for the sport and business side of things.

I for one, am a fan of the sport and not of any racer.. I like them all.
Rossi fans only like Rossi and no one else for the most part. They boo other riders, and I think thats a disgrace
Rossi has influenced rule changes over the years, that also i don't think is right.
Ive read some bad posts on different forums and some yellow people even selling their tickets to races because rossi is injured.
bad luck to them, good for race fans...
Motogp will continue after rossi retires, though he will still be in the paddock managing his teams... by then, he will have his own team In Motogp...

The animosity on here is mainly from people who are long term fans of the sport from well before Rossi, and see the overwhelming focus of the sport on him, a 38 year old rider who last won a title in 2009, as unreasonable, and unhealthy for the sport longterm; see my post on the other thread.

For myself, while I have had an issue with the crazy element among his fandom for many years I had no animosity against him personally until the events of late season 2015, when the careers of 2 other riders of the highest quality were affected, likely permanently, by imo a wild conspiracy theory promulgated by him to the world press at large without anything in the way of evidence, which made it clear to me he had been complicit in the persecution of previous rivals as well as those 2 current riders by the crazy element among his fandom.

That's where you are headed down the wrong path of reasoning . NO competitor should benefit over others by actions from the promoter to enhance ones chance of winning. At that point it ceases to be real competition, but fixed entertainment. After the 2007 season, Dorna showed the world that having Rossi win titles was all that mattered after strong arming Bridgestone into supplying Rossi tires against their will Again, during the 2012 season, they acted as Rossi's agent to strong arm Yamaha into taking him back against race department wishes. Lin Jarvis wanted to move on with Lorenzo and a younger rider but Dorna got Yamaha marketing to overrule him. Not to mention the early dominant years when he had a distinct tire advantage with the Saturday Night Specials. 2015 was comical as we saw 10's of millions of Rossi's fans fall for the false narrative that Marquez and Lorenzo conspired to rob him of the title. This was all created to deflect from the collapse he knew was coming . This was the final straw for me as mostly to that point I despised his fan base, but now I just wish he would leave so the sport I've been following for close to 50 years can get back to some form fair play and decency.

The 2015 thing was the thing that made me feel a lot less love towards Rossi. Thought the whole thing was immature and badly handled. People booing other riders isn't what sport is about. Where's the sportsmanship gone?

I'm not a massive Lorenzo fan but leaving Yamaha for Ducati looks at the moment to have been a pretty bad decision. Unless he comes into his own on the bike soon. I think it was at least partly due to all the rigmaroll with Rossi that he left.

I barely noticed about the commentators always commenting on Rossi until people on the forum mentioned it! But I think you're right!

As for me I'm a dovi fan :) really talented rider and best of all stays away from all the drama. Hoping this year will be a title year for him

Take the seat behind me.

The way I could tell Dovi is great rider is that whenever its really raining it was always Dovi and Stoner up front.

I like Marquez but Id actually prefer Dovi or Pedro get a title ..... they deserve it.

Ok, well here goes but will start by saying that I have never been a fan of the cult of personality, nor am I a fan of people from any walk of life who are 'look at me attention seekers'. This said, it is safe to say that I have never been a fan of Rossi as a rider (not questioning skill there, but more as a rider I do not cheer) or as an individual personality so read this with that in mind.

So, why do I feel this way?

- I am fortunate in some aspects in that I know a few people who have worked in, at or around GP's within the Australasian region and a number of stories I have been told by these people only cements my position that the Valentino seen on the screens is a screen persona only. When the camera and lights aren't around, like many the personality may change and people may well be surprised.

- Phillip Island Pizza shop, mid 90's (story relayed by a very trustworthy and present source)

- Phillip Island post race behaviours year of 10 second penalty (relayed by friends who officiated)

- DORNA's constant fascination with all things Valentino has allowed him (perhaps kind of forced him) to believe that he is somewhat the sport or perhaps even bigger than the sport, and as such he takes full advantage of the opportunities this presents. Now, somewhat hypocritically here I have no issue with him taking the advantage but have an issue with his constant self portrayal as somewhat the underdog despite the benefits received. Now as for benefits there are many stories but just a few would be Bridgestone being pressured, Caramello seemingly brokering a return to Yamaha as he 'needed a competitive Valentino', tyre impositions, pit to bike comms because people cannot read pitboards, 'come to my motorhome' etc. Of course, there will be more and not all solely benefitted Valentino but in MotoGP little to nothing gets done until Valentino speaks.

- Post Phillip Island 2015 behaviours that detracted from what was one of the best races of the last 10 years and continues to detract until this day.

- Media manipulation (of course this requires a complicit media) to build a hero vs villain approach for riders that dared to challenge or to put into the public arena a comment that is then run by these media to achieve an aim/purpose. This has led to many of the fan booing and abuse incidents that we have seen over the years and as has been shown, he can stop these if he wished (reference Ianonne) and yet we continue with the derision of competitors.

I could go on for as a fan of the sport I have gotten sick and bloody tired of the sport I have loved for near 40 years becoming a sideshow for one individual where the organisers and media are complicit.

Now, I will not and never have questioned his abilities as irrespective of benefits one may have (always had the best equipment available to his chosen factory) the sheer fact is that he still has to race against and beat all those on track, and you do not win the number of races he has without being at the top of your game physically, mentally and skillfully. His longevity in the sport is remarkable and should be admired but none of this means that he is a deity to all.

Did you miss the time rossi kicked Marquez

He should not still be on track ... based on that alone.

I have been following this sport a couple of decades before it became a "business". I won't and never have considered it a business, conducted to line the pockets of one rider in particular and the capitalist idiots who are filling their coffers on his success. It should be a contest between the best riders in the world, and ultimitely the best man wins.

I dislike Rossi because both Dorna and him have turned what was a sport into a business. Dorna over the last decade have been happy to manipulate rules, impose rule changes on manufacturers not associated with Rossi, doctor tyres in specific directions, even stand over multi-national companies to get the golden goose any advantage possible. The quest for the tenth title is obsessive for both of them, and it is to the detriment of the sport, but not detrimental to the business. And Uccio, that guy is just weird.

If thats not a good enough reason, theres always "The Valeban", those flouro yellow wearing idiots who boo at podiums, cheer when riders crash and have no perspective at all where Rossi is concerned.

The title says it all. Why does everyone hate Rossi?
Once again the "Rossi Haters" label is being applied to forum users.

So reading this the implication for the future, is that Dorna will manipulate the classes where a VR46 team is.
IMO that would kill whats left of the sport, I would most certainly not watch manipulation of teams for the advantage of 1.
At the moment I have my fingers X'd that we have seen the last of Rossi on a bike and no I don't believe he will be back this season regardless of what he says.

Rossi is never going away. He will be back sooner than you think. They will probably come up with moto40 in a few years so he can relive bashing on Sete and other old men. Moto40, 40 and over washed up pro class. You heard it hear first folks.

He'll be back, wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't on the 2018 chassis so he can work on development of the team's bike whilst Maverick is busy with trying to win the title.

Even if he isn't competitive he will throw his broken leg over the yami and cruise around for 10th or so. The yellow stain will brag about how brave he is for coming back so soon. Like McGregor fans commending him for going 10 rounds with a washed up powerless boxer.

great post. Takes energy to go over and over again on this site. Energy i dont care to expend.

could you elaborate on the two statements above. I don't know of the pizza shop incident, and reckon i do about the 10sec but need reminding.
