If we 1) believe the published numbers, 2) understand where the chain adjusters are in their travel, 3) take the bikes off their stands, 4) know where the forks are their clamps, 5) stick a rider on it to get static sag, 6) understand the CoG with a rider, 7) blah blah....then I might pay more attention.

But to be less of a smartarse. It's a decent analysis, based on what info is available.

If only .... was this simple.

Shitting must be otherwise I would have exploded from backed up crap years ago.

On reading that it just appears that Honda gives a greater front weight bias and the rider weights the read rather than the bike, so easy cornering less some stability but change arse position to gas it?

Is that what it says?

Somewhat.

It also seems to be saying: based on reasonable presumptions from what we have all observed on the telly, we can pump some numbers based on a single element of motorcycle dynamics (weight distribution in the horizontal plane) into an analysis to confirm our preconceptions.

Or.... looking at the numbers, the preconceptions they affirmed in me was the bike with the longer wheelbase was the more stable, while the one with the wildest chassis figures for rake/trail, wheelbase and weight distribution was also the hardest to ride.

But I don't really know a damned thing about it - I just rode the things and told mechanics what they felt like... they knew the magic fairies to .....-tweak to get the thing to do what I wanted.

Have you tried wiping with badly articulated, smooth metal hands?

What 'things'? You had mechanics???

'Things' were bikes and yes, they came with mechanics. Only leedle ones - 250 proddy, 250 TT-F3, 350 TT-F2 and 125/250GP - back when I was small enough to be semi-competitive :) (I don't know that I could even fit on one now, unless they have a beer-gut cutout in the tank).

Maybe I put it badly... I didn't have mechanics, but the team did. I didn't employ anyone. Most of my racing was pay-to-play, where the bike shop and tyre vendors would provide a good level of trackside mechanics and tech suport and engineering for those buying their products and racing under their banner. That was common in Oz and NZ in the 70s and 80s.

I built and raced a few four strokes on my own dime - silhouette class BOTT (Ducati Desmo, Pantah, Guzzi LM) - but only for fun and never with any sort of success, unless you count multiple wooden spoons as success.

In total I raced more than 15 years, but never at anything more than club/national level and never at anything more than mid-field, but I could qualify like a ............ ;)

(My wife says nothing's changed - good over one lap, no staying power... :( )

Cool.

I'm helping a mate build a TT2 replica (Steve Bridge frame, I think). It's going to be a track day bike...but he also has gut/tank interface issues, so I'm planning to claim it.

Used to race 125s, but worked out that I'm a better mechanic than racer, so kept doing that for my A-grader friends.

Pantah 600? Great motor - turn it into a 680, no-one will ever know ;)

Track bike. So capacity don't matter.

But yep, 600. Just needs a set of bearings and rings through the SL donor engine and it'll be fine. We're even retaining the battery mounted in the seat unit set-up. (yes, starter motor and all. We're lazy)

Been years since I rode a 4 stroke on a track...can't wait to compression lock the thing and land on my head. The deal for me helping is that he has to do some laps on my 125. Mainly for the amusement value of watching him shoehorn himself onto it....

Sounds like a cool build put some picks up buddy.

I'm already behind in putting pics of the PI Classic up. One day, when I don't want to smash my work computer, I'll get that phartograph-thingy account that Geo suggested and stick them up. The TT2 rep is a lovely thing. Nearly as nice as a GP125.

Yep, the reason I picked the Pantah in the first place was 90% on looks. At the time it did handle about as good as any other bike on the road and better than most non-2T.

Mine had a replica TT750 fairing and just a tiny amount of additional bracing in the headstock area, but significant brake, suspension, exhaust and engine mods. Those little buggers could show the heels to some much bigger opposition.

My Guzzi wasn't as much 'fun', but felt significantly more 'classic' - It is probably the only bike I regret letting go.

I am probably a better mechanic than racer... but that never stopped me embarrassing myself :)

You are rubbish with tools. I give you a simple job like measuring four pieces of timber and they are all different. Ill hire myself an Indonesian next time... they drink less, argue less, cost less and do a better job.

Is that what it says?

It also talks to the 'longer wheelbase for stability' argument. The Yamaha (the most stable) is the longest, followed by the easy change-of-direction Honda and the OMG-I-saved-a-tuck-in-ten-times-in-that-lap Ducati.

It's going to be a larf seeing Spies try to handle that, after the nice-handling M1. Hayden has already taken up residence in Cuckoo Land after years on the psychosis-inducing beast. Dovi will be the first to break, though. A visit to a psychotherapist is on the cards...

Zoot is back,

Firstly, welcome back and secondly I hope they send him to the same head shrink they sent Melandri to. It did him wonders in WSBK.

AFTER he got off the Ducati.  :tumbleweed2:
