I'm reminded of a post by JK in a thread that explored factory signings: 'the next move for an alien is to get on a factory Yamaha or Honda' (paraphrasing).

If you live in a glass house, don't throw rocks.

We shall see what the actual race looks like.

Will be interesting to see if the FP1 times are reflective of reality yet. Hopefully Pedrosa will have a better season this year as he has certainly looked better over the course of the pre-season. The RCV looked worlds better than it did one year ago. Marquez looked much more solid coming out of the final corner, and obviously with Pedrosa looking more comfortable, it's a good sign. I don't see Pedrosa winning the title or anything, but do think he will have an impact on the title battle.

FP1, yeah I know means as much as Qatar does to the overall championship.

But Rossi just inside the top 10? He races well at Qatar.

Baz, I like him he gives hope to anyone over 170cm tall, but up in 6th. Good for him.

I sort of figure Lorenzo is about where he may stay. I'd love to see him stomp home and win it. Then I think if he does he may struggle to win again all year.

.

Mid way through the session Rossi was wallowing away close to last on what is obviously the best bike on the grid. It a disgrace, he wasn't even trying.

Rossi:
"For me, what I suffer, more than the bike, is the front tyre from Michelin. Because they follow a softer way, especially about the casing but also about the rubber, and I lose feeling.

"I have a lot of movement in the entry, and I am not fast to enter, and to carry enough speed. I said from the first time [I tried the tyre], but it looks like the other riders like it, so these are the tyres. We will try tomorrow."

Mr Rossi. Lack of feel? Vudu says this is no friggin excuse. No excuse whatsoever. You are a 9 times world champion, the other riders can push, you can push, don't give this weak minded Lorenzo excuse of oh poor me I have no feel.

Every year we go through the same old routine. Throughout preseason testing they consult with the riders and the vast majority tend to prefer softer construction tires with a lot of edge grip. Then the 1000 pound gorilla in the room starts his usual moaning about lacking confidence and maybe I will just retire. 2 rounds later a new and improved tire spec is put out there on the rounds of improved safety.

Cal had a scare...

Cal Crutchlow's 2017 season got off to a smoky start, due to a scary mechanical problem in FP1 at the Qatar MotoGP.

"We don't know [what happened]. Obviously I had an oil leak, and now they're investigating," said the Englishman, speaking in the paddock on Thursday evening.

Crutchlow refused to confirm or deny that he might lose one of his seven engines for the season, but did admit to being spooked by the incident.

The double MotoGP winner returned to post the seventh fastest lap time on his spare RC213V.

"I nearly highsided going into Turn 1 at f**king 330 km/h. But honestly, for the rest of the session, I rode really ...., really scared. When you have something like that happen, it takes a while to get over.

"If you crash, and you know why you've crashed, you say, 'OK, I crashed a lap ago, I'm on my spare bike, I can go faster'. With [the engine problem] it's not in your control, you're shitting yourself the whole time.

"But it turned out OK. I was riding bad and the lap time was not too bad considering. And I was on a bike that we'd never ridden before with those settings. It was just going to be doing two laps today, and it ended up doing the whole session."

The early incident also meant Crutchlow used more tyres than expected.

"I used three sets in the end, because one was soaked in oil and then we went with the new tyres in the end because it's supposed to rain tomorrow. But I think everybody's in the same boat. And at least my first set of tyres are clean, because they're 'shiny'!"

Meanwhile, Crutchlow feels that - just as one year ago - electronics remain the key ingredient in terms of unlocking the full potential from the new-for-2017 'big bang' Honda engine.

"We again haven't figured out the electronics to make the best out of the bike with this engine. So when it does happen, hopefully it will be better.

"Honda are working very hard on electronics. I think that this is one of the keys to being fast, because it seems that Ducati; we know that they figured it out a lot faster than anyone else. Sure, they have a fast bike, but I believe that electronically, they are the best.

"This is why they are able to be quite fast around the track as well. Honda will figure it out in the end, it's just a matter of giving them a bit more time. Especially with this configuration of engine."

SNAFU

What, is Assen style rain predicted for Qatar or something? Lorenzo won't even try to win, ride some parade laps win he?

Why on Earth or even China for that matter would you discount Lorenzo winning on one of his favourite tracks which also happens to be one of Ducatis all time best tracks? Lorenzo is a faster rider than Dov in my humble opinion. .... he even beat Stoner on the best bike on the grid Honda once.

Yes - but he's not on the Yamaha anymore. He's on a bike that understeers and his ride-on-rails style is completely antithetical to this bike, Ducati track or not.

Not as if I wouldn't like to see him be competitive - but I'm not holding my breath.

With each passing session, it is getting harder and harder to ignore Vinales. Marquez has to be worried, but nowhere near as worried as his teammate. Now let's see how he runs in a crowd.

Funny that you wanted to ignore Vinales in the first place. You guys were in here comparing Marquez on a factory RCV to Vinales learning and exceeding expectations on a new GSX-RR that was down on power. Hard to execute passes if you can't stay close down the straights. MM had his time to show what he can do with top equipment & support, now it's MV's time to shine.

He's definitely posting some great times and Marquez has to be aware if not worried. But having said that it was FP1 and as we all know most of the time it means .... all.

Of course the electronics are an issue, Cal. (Repost): Honda suffered the most with the spec-ecu, and Ducati had a head-start with Magneti Marelli. Ducati isn't faster with development. They just started sooner. Regardless, that Ducati engine design is very good and they consistently produce a lot of power. I am glad Cal is okay.

The problem at this point is that EVERYONE is a lot slower than Vinales. So, I cut the rest of my post, until someone gets closer. ;-)

Except Vinaeles couldn't pass his team mate last year. Not only that the Suzuki was out accelerating the RCV consistently last year. Get your head out of your ....
