Hey all of the race gets cancelled because of the weather, does it get rescheduled or cancelled all together?

Quali delayed till tomorrow due to rain.

There will not be any qualifying sessions.

MotoGP grid for the #QatarGP decided by combined timings after FP3

After overnight rain, a storm and too much standing water on track at Losail International Circuit, the original timetable for Saturday at the #QatarGP saw some adjustments before the decision was taken by Race Direction to cancel track action for the day.

Track conditions were deemed too dangerous to enable riders to get out on track – and with little chance of improvement as rain and lightning began again.

So it’s combined times after the end of FP3 that will decide the grid ahead of Sunday. What does that mean? This:

Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) will start from his first pole for Yamaha. Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Andrea Iannone and reigning Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) join him on the front row.

The second row is: Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), and Scott Redding (Octo Pramac Racing) in sixth.

The third row – so from P7 to P9 – is Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team), Jonas Folger (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda).

Valentino Rossi heads up Row 4 in tenth, ahead of Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Racing). Jorge Lorenzo is in 12th on his debut with the Ducati Team.

Why don't they just set the grid from warm up practice when more adjustments have been made.

Stupid freak weather, needed some Saturday night action instead of ....... Ant and Dec!

Dorna is pretty rigid about starting the MotoGP on day and on time. There is too much money at stake. I think they will start the race, no matter what. They may stop it after a couple of laps, if it's too dangerous. That is my bet.

I don't see how they will have a safe race if there is any more rain. The poor drainage reminds me of Laguna Seca and the stream across the corkscrew. Very hairy. And it could be wet there more than a day after it stopped raining..

I thought i heard the commentators say during the coverage of FP1 that they could race Monday night if tomorrow is cancelled?

It did rain once before and they changed the time of the race, and that was before Bernie killed the French guy.

I forgot about 2009. I actually went back to see what I was doing that day.

I am with Daniboy, however. I think it would take a bomb or insane weather for Dorna to move MotoGP to a Monday, anymore.

I for once was watching that F1 race live in which Julian Bianchi died, and thought it was insane they ran it at a time it was known a typhoon was arriving before anything happened, and it was also pretty obvious the Japanese race organisers etc wanted to change the time before that race.

It depends how dangerous it would be to run in the rain imo, but they did consider it sufficiently dangerous to change the time once before as has been said. Considering they changed the whole premier class formula after Katoh's death I would like to think even Dorna are less morally bankrupt, or at least more cautious, than Bernie in his latter days.

It might not be a mass damper yes, but I think whatever is in there is mass-damping related. Even if it were just a relocation of electronics, if it's of a sufficient weight, it can have a mass dampening effect on the bike. Guess we will just have to wait and see if anything ever is revealed.

During the FP1 session at one point when Lorenzo was in the garage after a run he was talking with the engineers and made a jerky motion in what I believe was reference to the bike being leaned over. I'm thinking that was likely front end chatter complaints. I guess depending on how bad and in how many corners it's occurring, maybe they haven't got the front damper balance down in a way that helps Lorenzo without turning the bike into an understeer bike. It's going to be fascinating to see if they are able to make progress with Lorenzo and have him in a much better position to deliver results at the halfway point. For our sake I hope they do as him being in the mix at the front is good for racing.

What's a mass damper? How does it affect the bike's behaviour?

It's a system that was used in F1 in the mid 2000's to counter the vertical movement of an unsprung mass which basically evened out the variations in loading of the tyres which in themselves act like a spring, and the suspension itself. Fir example if you hit a bump or have a change in weight transfer, the loading of the tyre changes like a waveform as the load is dampened out. A mass damper evens out the fluctuations.

Given that the mass dampers used in F1 were about 9kg (approx. 20lb), I personally can't see that such a small box on the tail of the GP17 is that heavy and even if it was, would do much to counter anything on the front end. As best it would stabilise the swingarm squat fluctuations under load (acceleration). That's just my opinion of course.

ETA: Found some more images to explain the operation::
