Pedrosa says form hurt by Marquez's bike choice

Dani Pedrosa says the reason for his failure to match Marc Marquez this season is because of the extent to which Honda’s MotoGP bike has been designed around the needs of the two-time champion.

Pedrosa lies fourth in the points standings, having taken two podiums in Argentina and Catalunya, while Marquez leads the championship with two victories to his credit.

Honda took the radical step of redesigning its engine with counter-rotating crankshaft over the winter, a change Marquez said at the start of the year had been requested by both factory riders.

But Pedrosa claims he had no input in the decision, and is now paying the price of having to compete on a bike built around Marquez’s preferences.

The 30-year-old also said that he knew he would be in for a difficult time in 2016 as early as the Valencia test last November.

"In the end we didn't have many specs [of engines], but out of the ones we had I wouldn't have chosen the current one,” Pedrosa admitted.

"When we picked the bike I already knew things would be very hard. I already knew how the bike handled in November. But it is what it is.

"The choice of bike that we have was [Marquez's], I had nothing to do with it.

“For the moment, he's ahead and he deserves to be. He likes the bike, he adapts better to it, while I struggle more.

“That's obvious, you can see it in the results and in the way we ride."

Pedrosa said the poor performance of Honda’s satellite bikes this season in comparison to previous years was yet further evidence of how the RC213V has been designed around Marquez’s needs.

Cal Crutchlow’s sixth place at Catalunya has been the best result for a Honda rider besides Marquez and Pedrosa of the campaign so far.

“You have to think of the team, not only about yourself,” Pedrosa added.

“If you look at the rest of the Hondas, they are a lot further behind than two or three years ago, when you had [Stefan] Bradl or [Alvaro] Bautista finishing fourth or fifth.

“Now they are 10th and further [back]. So we have to try to get the other teams to work too."

Damn this Casey Stoner and his lack of development abilities, surely this must be his fault :p

Sounds like Honda has learned from their mistake of designing a bike for their non-champion. Dani should dust of the old pedro-cyle.

The irony is hysterical, considering that Honda built a bike around Pedrosa and forgot all about Hayden. Well, gee, Dani, win some championships and Honda will spend more than half their money on you. Despite his tininess and this silliness, he is still pretty-darn-quick. I have thought he would retire riding Honda for a number of years, now.

He's right about Honda going backwards in terms of anyone but Marc, not to say they should have designed the bike for Dani exclusively either, but they seem to have put all the eggs in one basket and if #93 cops an injury they will struggle. I'd like to see Dani back at the front, it would add another aspect to an already enthralling season.

I'd love to see Dani win a MotoGp championship. If Honda as a whole are struggling though, it wouldn't surprise me to see them focus on trying to 'fix' the bike to Marc's preference first and foremost as he is the one at the pointy end and challenging for championships, not just race wins. Ironic situation though.

You say to Marc's preference but sometimes I think we underestimate the extent to which Dani has altered and is capable of adapting the Lawson-esque style that was initially his hallmark. Christ, against Rossi last year at Aragon he rode the thing like Schwantz. Brilliant to watch. Now more often than not you see Pedro slewing the thing sideways and you find that you double take initially thinking it's Márquez.

With a bit more luck Dani could definitely have been a champion once at least, maybe twice, 28 wins and 102 podiums in his time in Moto GP class. Hopefully his chance will come, he's only 31 and if Vale can still do it at 37 there's no reason why not.

It would take an injury for him to beat MM on a Honda.

The worst thing that ever happened in Pedro's life was the 2012 season. I think that whole bunch of victories made him somehow feel all the time was not lost and he could have hopes for the future, while the ugly truth is he stayed throughout his whole career with a brand that, no matter the power, was never a good choice for him in the first place. If he came to Yama to replace Rossi in 2011 he would have actually won one championship. Others ifs and buts about him are speculation, injuries included: he has sadly become Mr regret but that's cause his whole career has been built around one giant mistake.

I'd love to see Dani get a title before he retires but sadly he's stuck in the same position as other #2 riders. It's a shame the factories don't cater 100% for each of their riders, then we'd get to see what each could really do.
What I'd really love to see and it's a crazy concept that'll never happen. I'll say it anyway as I think it'd show the true best overall rider;
We have 20 bikes, 20 riders and 20 races. Each rider gets to ride a different bike at each track and takes just their chief engineer and suspension engineer with them. For the first race they draw numbers to decide their bike for the first race. Therein, immediately after each race, the riders take place in a draw to see which bike they'll use next time, with the bikes they've used removed from the pot. Tyres at each meeting are presented on racks, on each rack is a number, riders draw a number from another pot and their team wheels that rack of tyres into the garage in full view of the media. That's their allocation for the weekend and that's it, no accusations of riders getting preference over others here either.
I think it would be entertaining and funny to see how riders cope with the different characteristics of each bike, although it'd never happen due to factories wanting their secrets to stay so.
To me such a series would define an absolute world champion. No theories of rider favouritism whatsoever.
It's crazy but does anyone else think it would make for a good spectacle?

Don't agree, Sepang 2015 he was untouchable by any rider on any bike.

Dani has times when the stars align for him, when this happens he's brilliant, untouchable and nobody will catch him. He's always been this way, Lorenzo is similar too.
When Dani has these days he's a delight to watch, worth the entry fee alone, sadly these days are too few though.

Absolutely. He has had a couple of races a year like that his whole premier class career. I can't see him doing it every race for a whole season against MM even should he have no injury/health concerns for a whole season, which has hardly ever happened.

Absolutely, I have also fantasized over the idea of there being an exhibition round (#19) where everyone is on identical bikes for a race. Could even make it a charity event and make Dorna's image shine a little brighter.

The more truthful statement would be, Its a shame that Honda in not entirely happy with every years Pedrosa

They were quick enough to offer a new contract to this rider they weren't happy with. How many times has he been injured through no fault of his own and missed races but still scored good championship points, he's helped Honda to quite a few manufacturers titles which is why they want to keep him.
