I see the accident myself in YouTube, it looks that after the crash itself, his head is sliding on the asphalt, his face is make a friction with the asphalt itself.
Also, a mask such as below image could be used for every MotoGP and other motorcycle racer to anticipate and reduce the risk of injury around the head and face region when the helmet is broken or accidentally detached from the racer's head or wearer.
