Pedrosa's strategy made sense to me. He was 74pts behind Marquez so he needed to take a big chance, and hope Marquez crashed. Marquez' strategy (lackthereof) was confusing. He's on the same bike as Dani so he doesn't have to worry about superior equipment from his closest competitor. Rossi was out so Marquez' only need to collect solid points to clinch for Honda and for himself.

The big loser was Rossi, though. If he had kept it together, the championship could have been close. Let's suppose that Rossi found a way to win, he'd be on 239 and Marquez on 291. HRC would be quite uncomfortable.

A calculated risk; but a badly calculated one. Experience (IMHO) should have told him to change bikes and let the young one (who Casey-like) is so often on the verge of crashing, do just that. It's not like winning the race would have closed the gap between him and MM sufficiently to make him a contender for the championship. I know hindsight is 20-20 but one would think Dani would have had enough experience of MM to know the kid wasn't going to back off and play it safe; and Pedrosa ought to have been savvy enough to get on the 2nd bike and take advantage of MM's win-it-or-bin-it style. Even if MM hadn't crashed - Pedrosa would have ensured his likelihood of taking 2nd by a large margin; but in the poring rain with riders going down all around him he chose to out-balls MM (mostly out of spite I think) he stayed out there; ironic when you consider how often he's been lambasted as the guy doomed to be the eternal brides' maid for a lack of willingness to take risks.

Interesting point about Rossi tho. I hadn't given serious attention to his points standing. Too busy groaning about Lorenzo's "eventful" season to fully appreciate how well Rossi was doing.
